Darth Sidious' Speech To A Dying Plagueis (Star Wars: Darth Plagueis)

  • The passage is an excerpt from chapter 30. Chancellor Palpatine had just been appointed. Sidious and Plagueis head to Plagueis' penthouse to celebrate. They are big drinkers. Plagueis feels that it is too much and tries to stop, but Sidious forbids it. Sidious tells Plagueis his speech for tomorrow's senate meeting as he is drinking. Plagueis started to nod out. Sidious regarded this as the ideal chance to murder his master and provide a speech in the process.

    "Let's go over the second part of the speech, shall we. You useless old fool. It was Hego Damask as Darth Plagueis who came to Naboo, determined to suck the planet dry of plasma and set the Trade Federation up as its overseers. It was Hego Damask as Plagueis who then set his sights on a seemingly confused young man and, with meticulous skill, manipulated him into committing patricide, matricide, fratricide. Darth Plagueis who took him as an apprentice, sharing some of his knowledge but withholding his most powerful secrets, denying the apprentice his wishes as a means of controlling him, instilling in him a sense of murderous rage, and turning him to the dark side. It was Plagueis who criticized the early efforts of his apprentice, and who once choked him in a demonstration of his superiority. Plagueis, who denigrated him in private for hiring an inept assassin to carry out the murder of Senator Kim-and yet who allowed himself to be tricked by the Gran and nearly killed by mercenaries. Plagueis, who turned away from the Grand Plan to focus entirely on himself, in an egotistical quest for immortality."
    In case any of you want to follow along.

    Tenebrous was too proud to think that Plagueis would have the guts to kill him.
    Plagueis was too proud to realize that he had lost focus and was getting sloppy.
    Sidious was too proud to understand that Vader, while broken, was not beyond redemption.

    This book is an absolute masterpiece. It explores the Sith plot in great detail, explains the real reasons behind everything that happens in the Prequels, and also brilliantly shows Palpatine's rise to power and how monumental Darth Plagueis's role in it was. Moreover, it completely changes the way you look at the events of The Phantom Menace. I can't watch the movie now and not think about the real reasons behind the Naboo blockade, about the fact that just before Palpatine met with Qui-Gon and the team on their arrival from Tatooine, he'd just spoken to Plagueis, the fact that before Qui-Gon and the team went to Naboo, Plaguies was watching them from afar and had a vision about Anakin's future, the fact that just before Palpatine went to Naboo to congratulate Padme, Obi-Wan and Anakin on their victory, this scene had occurred on Coruscant. James Luceno has woven Hego Damask into the story so well, it becomes hard to believe he hasn't appeared in the movie at all.

      Combine that with the great episode of Tales of The Jedi where Dooku falls to the dark side. This happens perhaps a day after he killed Plagueis and lost Maul. Now he turns Dooku to the dark side.

    It's funny that Sidious wasn't outright deceiving Anakin. Plagueis could prevent others from dying. Sidious only twisted the story in his own direction but Plagueis knew power. The only thing is that Sidious never had any ambition to train Vader with such a power.

    • @mistadopeyy
      @mistadopeyy ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That is because Sidious is the endpoint of the Sith dynasty. He is pure evil at it’s most raw state and he is the most powerful in terms of raw power as well. Both politically and in the dark side. The ultimate tyrant of both the dark side and of government. This all begins with Bane and the rule of two, where he decides there needs to be a culmination of political cunning and deception for the sith from here on out as opposed to just brute strength and fighting on the battlefield with their army in useless zealotry.
      Palpatine doesn’t even respect or serve the force. He only serves himself and actively preys on the force as it’s something to be dominated. It’s interesting to see the stark difference between Plagueis’ death and Tenebrous’ death. When Plagueis kills his master it’s almost this heartwarming “oh but the great plan is really coming along!” But with Sidious it’s all malice and, like I said, pure evil. He is the Sith line perfected. The great irony is he ends up giving birth to Rey who is ultimately Good. Go figure lol.
      But to get back to my point. Vader was never more than a tool to Sidious. Vader was never truly evil, he always had a bit of good in him and was capable of redemption. He was never as strong as Sidious either, he could only take him down with the help of Luke. The force is balanced when he finally is able to depose Sidious. It’s interesting how Sidious keeps on searching for new talent but there’s really nobody who can be his apprentice truly because he is the Sithari. When his “apprentice” kills him it’s not to take his place, it’s to redeem himself and die. Thereby ending this Sith dynasty.

      @@mistadopeyyI think Maul was ultimately the end of the Sith dynasty, since he was the only “apprentice” that had actual training. Even in the Clone Wars we can see how Maul uses manipulation tactics to posses power, similar to Palpatine.

      @@ToroBravo144That is Canon Maul in Legends Maul lacked the IQ for anything else other then unarmed combat, physical abilities, double bladed lightsaber use, jar kai fighting, and stealth missions Legends Maul had a high potential higher then most but it still was not as high as Abeloth, The Skywalkers, The Solos Under Leias Line, The Mereks, Sidious, Yoda, Dooku, Mace, Plagueis, Or Malgus.
      In Canon Maul was meant to be Sidious successor before his crippled state on Naboo and before The Skywalkers were discovered his potential surpassed everyone except for Abeloth, The Father, The Daughter, And The Skywalkers yeah.

    Ironically Palpatine also underestimated Plagueis. You notice how tbe subtlety of his control and the reach of Sidious' foresight falls without his counsel. It is still mighty, but pride clouds him from having the introspection needed to hold the galactic throne in the face of the rebellion.

    I absolutely love Palpatine now, seriously used to just love Vader and Luke and Kenobi. But the true master is Palpatine, he is the only one to have taken on all of them, Yoda, Mace Windu, Luke, Vader, everyone. And won, the Windu fight was obviously because Palpatine could feel Anakin, he knew if he was in a position of defense and being defenseless, he’d have a greater chance of turning Anakin in the moment because he had to choose right then and there, either he lives, or Anakin will not know how to save Padme. Not knowing, that that is the choice that put the nightmare in motion.
