  • Welcome to the second Q&A session with me, Emily Rose. I'm a professional wildlife and pastel artist and here to share a few of my best techniques and tricks with you!

This time, we are looking at how to create an underpainting. An underpainting is the very first thing we get established in a drawing and it is so important in order to get that realistic finish. If you want to find out how to create a proper underpainting, then follow my tips:
Look for the tonal structure of your subject: where are the lightest areas and where are the darkest?
Ignore details at this stage and instead create a good covering over your board.
To find out which pencils you should be using, look for the general colour and then pick up a pencil which is both a little darker and has less colour to it.

Great informative video Emily. The underpainting technique is critical to producing 3D structured paintings. I recently subscribed to Emily’s Gumroad video tutorials with no knowledge of pastels and can now produce great paintings after a few weeks as she is such a great teacher

Hi Martin, thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you found it useful! You are completely right, the underpainting is the foundation for any drawing focused around realism and your own work is showing just what a difference a good structure can make!

I struggle with the underpainting a little but you explained this really, really well. I’m going to try this for myself. Thank you so much for sharing this. 😊

Thank you Gillina! Underpaintings are great to play around with. Grab yourself some scrap paper and create swatches, really try to make a mess and learn how pastels do and don't work through experimentation :)

Emily you seem to know what you are talking about but I think an actual demonstration would be great for those who learn visually.

Hi Heidi, thanks so much. I do have full tutorials on my Gumroad channel that covers this visually and also some free tutorials on my channel which start to show what I am talking about here too. I'll try and incorporate some demos when I have time though! thanks :)
