I love how you explain the benefits of an underpainting. I also love seeing different colours interacting without blending them fully or filling the paper. I am not claiming to be a colour expert, but even with that, there are times where I have created "happy accidents" as Bob Ross would call them.

Underpainting is a great way to gain insight on color tones for beginner artist
It helps to connect with the energy of the landscape through rhythm & movement to the focal point.
    Loved watching this tutorial 👌👌👌

One of my favorite practice surfaces is Grumbacher mixed media paper ($8 at Walmart for a 60-sheet pad) with clear gesso.😁

Underpaintings can create a glow that one layer cannot. They can provide a color that pulls the entire painting together creating a sense of harmony.

Beautiful value study! I typically (never :) take this much time with an underpainting…I do with oil grisaille, but …need to take this much time with pastels!

Great video! I love luxarchival paper. To get rid of the white, I paint it with golden fluid acrylics. It’s a great way to get a painting’s complementary color down before I even start with pastels.

Should the same concept of using less dominating colours in underpainting be used for drawing on toned paper as well?
For example you used “pink” as the background paint for a sunflower field.
Would you use a “sand-toned paper” for a river rather than a desert?
    Thank you 👍
