  • This video shows me completing a Christmas pet portrait commission for a client. The timelapse drawing is a great example of how to layer pastel colour and tone, keep some areas flat with shadow and others brighter and high in detail.
Pastel pencils are the perfect medium for drawing animals and so work really well for dogs and cats! I have a full length beginner class to help you learn to draw on Gumroad, find it below:

This is really beautiful work. The dislike was not earned. Gorgeous textures, shading and blending. You are extremely talented, and this is high quality art.

Glad I watched this. Very informative. Using text instead of speaking made me watch what you were doing instead of concentrating on what was being said. This made a great change from others sites I have watched. I use pastels and pastelmat pads…… and this is the first time, thank you, that I now know the difference between pastelmat paper and pastelmat board! Hence, I shall be ordering board in future.

The green in the underpainting blew my mind. I never saw it coming and wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But it looked great. Lovely work!

Thanks Annette, using colours in neutal fur is a winner. Some basic colour theory will see you right and then no brown will look the same again! :)

Thank you! I use a variety, mainly the faber castell set and a few from cretacolor as well. The paper is clairefontaine pastelmat and this was the board in sand. On my Gumroad channel there’s a free ebook ‘pastel pencil guide’ with more detailed tips!

Hi Emily, I went to your website. The link to "Become a member" does not work. Also, I hit the contact button and it brings up class bundles. Not sure if I am doing something wrong on my side.

Hi Kimbearly, oh I'm so sorry! I am in the process of cleaning that site up but it's not ready yet, thank you so much for flagging these issues. The link to the membership is just here:

Thank you! I don't, I currently have a Gumroad channel but I'm actually working on a new website to host more long form content. A whole pet portrait master class launches in 2024 :)
