      No, I don't use fixative on any of my pastel pieces - it's not necessary with the techniques/supplies I use, and it can honestly cause more problems than it solves 😊

Too, many beginners such as myself don’t have pastel mat or pastel board. Only pastel papers that are about 130-136lb. Would that make a difference to your tutorials? Sincerely

    Hi Kirsty, I love your art and I just subscribed to your Patreon. I would like to do these panpastel with pencil paintings, but I like to keep things looser. Is there a way to follow these tutorials but not have to work it up to photo realistic? I want to get the point across but not have to do every single hair and feather.
    Thank you for any advice on this.

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there,
      I actually don't add every hair and feather (you'll see that in my tutorials, and I also talk about this quite a lot)
      It's an illusion - the drawing looks realistic/detailed from a distance, but close up, there's really not that much detail at all
      I actually spend 3-4 hours on average on a piece of artwork, which really isn't that long for a realistic piece (and that's because I don't spend the time adding those tiny details)
      But if you want to keep it even looser, you can stop the layering process earlier!
      Some art instructors will work in "sections" where they finish one part of the animal at a time, then move onto the next part - whereas I work on the entire piece in layers
      This means that you could potentially stop the layering process earlier if you want to and just pick and choose if/where you want to add any details 😊
      Hope that helps!

    How many layers would you say you do in most of your pastel pictures? I'm struggling with this.

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      It honestly depends how thick your layers are! It does take quite a bit of practice to get used to how much pastel you lay down in each layer but in general I start with a light layer of Pan Pastel (so you can still see a lot of the paper showing through)
      Then I will add probably 2 to 5 layers of pastel pencil on top of that depending on the texture that I need (for example something with a lot of layers of fur like a lions mane - I may need to do more layers where as something smooth like a cherry I may only need to do one or two layers)
      But it really just takes time to learn how the paper works with your pastels and you will get used to how much pasta you can actually lay down in each layer depending on what you want your own result to be 😊

    UART seems to take more layers than pastelmat 800 grade and lower gets even more layers.

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm glad it works for you 😊
      Clairefontaine Pastelmat gets compared to sanded papers (like UART and Fisher400) but it's actually not a sanded paper and it only comes in one "grade".
      It's a completely unique surface made from natural cellulose fibres, whereas UART is a sanded paper so they work very differently in practice.
      UART is also not archival on the back, which could affect the longevity of your work over time which is why I don't use it for my artwork, but if it works for you/others then I'm happy you've found something you like. Everyone has their own preferences and supplies they prefer to use and there's no right or wrong way to create art, it just depends on your goals 😊

    Is there really no other tools to use other than the Sofft tools? I am so annoyed with how fast I go through applicators and I am not even using it on sanded or pastelmat paper, just Golden's satin finish media in coloring books that is just textured enough to hold the pastel. I feel like high quality makeup brushes would be better?

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes when people go through applicators quickly, it may be because of how hard/soft your pressing (I only do a few soft strokes, barely touching the paper, before going back and getting more pastel - rather than pressing harder to get more pastel off)
      Mine last quite a long time by only using them gently - I even have some from when I first started with Pans about 5 years ago!
      I also try to use the larger sponges and squeeze them into different shapes for smaller areas (these tend to last a long time in comparison to the smaller covers for the blue sticks)
      I have tried using makeup sponges/brushes in the past but they don't pick up the pastel and apply it/blend it as smoothly as the Sofft tools (most Pan Pastel artists agree with this as well)
      There are people who use brushes for smaller details but honestly, they don't work the same way
      I haven't tried all the options for makeup sponges and brushes though, so it could be worth a shot - and if you find anything that works equally as well as Sofft tools, then I would love to know about it 😊

  • @feb388
    @feb388 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't afford panpastels and the applicators . They are so much more expensive in my country and I plan on buying soft pastels and using a paintbrush to apply it on the paper just for like the base layer . Not even detailed . Just block in the shape . And using colourpencils over it. I'd love to see a video about a topic like that . Cause I've heard that pan pastels are similar to soft pastels , just more pigment and compressed .

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pan Pastels are actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan 😊
      Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks
      The main problem with sticks is that it's very hard to control how much pigment you are laying down, which means you can fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly (meaning you can't add pencil on top)
      You can actually just buy the basic set of 5 Pan Pastels (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint!
      That is something you can't do with soft pastel sticks (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels)
      I've had my set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork , and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊
      There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish!
      You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick
      I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel because they are actually more cost effective (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊

    Its too bad they ruined pastelmat paper. They changed the formula now it has too much tooth

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I speak to another artist regularly (Bonny Snowdon) who has been in contact with Clairefontaine about this issue. Clairefontaine technically didn't change anything, but the problem is that they have an "acceptable variance" allowed in their manufacturing process... which means that some batches are rougher than others. I also find that some colours are rougher than others (the darker shades in particular feel rougher to me, whereas the white on the thicker board feels very smooth - I tend to prefer brown, dark grey, and sienna).
      In general, I can usually get a decent amount of layers/detail even on the batches that are too rough or too smooth, so I just deal with it because unfortunately, there still isn't a better alternative out there as this is a unique surface.
      I completely understand that it can be disappointing if you get a paper that is rougher or smoother than you'd like!
      All that being said, sometimes they actually do have genuinely "bad" batches that don't take many layers of pastel. If you notice a huge difference in quality, you may actually have a faulty batch and you can take some photos and email Clairefontaine who are usually pretty good at sending replacements 😊
