Apart from obviously being a skilled artist, you have a real knack for conveying information in a clear, organized and understandable way. Pedagogy is its own skill set, quite apart from making art, and I really appreciate your way of teaching. This was very informative.
Yes indeed, very helpful. There are so many demos/tutorials that I like, but don't fully understand why they're doing things in a certain way. This was a really well planned lesson and I will certainly give it a go.
That’s because it literally is a “master piece!” She did what’s called a master study of Rosa Bonheur’s painting “The Horse Fair.” Many classically trained artists will essentially “copy” an artwork to study how a master would paint. It helps train for colour precision, lighting, subject composition, etc.
@@Allmylovelyc thank you that’s very helpful to know- I struggle with not wanting to ‘copy’ artists even though I know I will learn from it as I’m scared to then venture out on my own and most times fail 🤫
I love that you never had and solid “do this” or “don’t do this” statements in this video and instead focused on possibilities and experimentation. So many tutorials that I’ve watched seem to just be about telling people what to do and not do which I think can hurt beginning artists’ creative journey. This was a very good and inspiring tutorial!
Thank you!! That means a lot. A long time ago when I was a wee artist, one of my art friends online (whom I really admired, they were already an art director at a company before I had gone to college) told me that they never took anyone seriously who thought their art tips were law. So... I try not to do that! Everyone learns for their entire life.
This is the best underpainting tutorial I've ever seen. I am still a beginner with painting and color theory, but I didn't know that underpaintings could make such a huge difference! The drastic differences in the various demos also make it so much easier to understand how they work and I am incredibly grateful for that! I've always heard people comment how they could tell whether a painting has one or not and maybe guess what color it was, but they were never elaborated beyond that and this video has finally helped me understand! Thank you!!
I've tried underpaintings before after seeing other artists using them but never fully understood how they're supposed to work. That has been incredibly informative and easy to follow, thank you so so much! ❤️
So nice to see a fully qualified professional artist demonstrating on TH-cam, teaching correct information and skills. I am inspired to experiment with gouache watercolours trying you clever techniques. Thank you.
I've started using underpaintings recently, but am still a quite new to them, so I was really excited to see this video! Thanks so much for such a great resource and sharing your experience with them. I thought it was interesting that in these specific demos, I liked the warmer underpaintings, but the complimentary study!
Just, wow. Talent plus!!! I kind of understood the concept of underpainting but didn’t think it would make much of a difference. However seeing the three paintings next to each other really opened my eyes. Very very well done. Thank you!
This was interesting. I knew what an underpainting was but I never thought to let it be seen. I have always used my fine detail brush to cover the underlayer completely. I can see the colored halo effect is nice for a whimsical-cartoon art piece. Thank you, you reminded me that putting a compliment wash under the main color focus enrichens the focus of the main color.
I've been wanting to try underpainting in my gouache work but haven't fully understood how to go about it before. Now I'm super excited to test it! I mostly paint landacapes with lots of greens so a bright yellow underpainting will help me a lot with the light I hope. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ⭐
Started following because of your gouache expertise then noticed you have a paleontology focus. Then found out you work at Tyrell which is supercool because I’m a big fan and followed their Speaker Series each season on TH-cam. What this means is I’ve followed your work for years and didn’t really know it. 😏
MARYYYY, that's so useful! I enjoy your tutorials so much. Having kinda hard time with gouache so I'm happy to see your new video ❤️ I would really love to see your kitty more often, she's adorable!
Very interesting and helpful! Years ago when I worked in oils, I used to use an Indian red underpainting for landscapes. Now, I'm just getting into gouache and watercolor and interested in trying this out.
This exercise was very helpful. I tried it on a recent work in watercolor and loved how the colors responded. The undercoat wash also allowed the top layer to be more removable when I used the wet brush technique to reveal reflection.
Hi Mary, I'm in the exploratory phase of gouache, just learning what it can do. Really like the painting of the buck. You clearly know your way around a palette. Very nice work.
Elizabeth Keefner here.... This was excellent!!! I have been baffled by the use of under paintings when it appears you just paint over it anyway. I was hoping someone would do side be side comparisons just like this. Thank you and I love alive all your videos.
Thank you for a great, informative video. Have you thought about including the same demo picture done without any underpainting? I understand the value of underpainting especially after your video but a demo without an underpainting would have been useful for me, I am a total beginner with qouache and am so glad I've found your channel. Thank you.
It was very interesting...in fact I was researching about base layers of colors and now I'm more confident to make them in my paintings, cuz I didn't do it.
That was both informative and entertaining. Well done. Saved on my Gouache List for rewatching. Also, appreciated the brief appearance of the cat’s paw🤣
I've actually never used an underpainting before so I thought this was really interesting. I definitely want to give it a go and even try some bright color underpaintings like you mentioned.
Thank you for this--honestly the best tutorial and comparison re: underpainting I have come across. I appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into this video!
Thank you. I have not done underpainting before and I am new to gouache, hence really enjoyed your video and found it informative, clearly explained. Much appreciated. 😊❤
Selecting a staining watercolor for your underpainting is also helpful. It moves even less than just a tint-strength underpainting with a non-staining color.
i loved this, i know i'm late to the party, but i thought you did a great job explaining. thank you. i also didn't know how to do an underpainting without reactivating the guache, now i do. thank you!!
This was FANTASTIC! I haven’t touched Gauche (or any paint) for many years. I studied jewelry design in gauche many years ago at FIT and loved it and I needed a reminder and this was priceless. Thank you so much 💫
I really liked this! I’ve been wanting to try gouache for years and finally ordered some, I’ve never seen artists do an under painting and I’m really excited to try this technique out!
Thank you for this! This is very helpful and you made it easy to understand! I have always wondered and used to overthink on what color of underpainting I should use. I would always just stick to "Yellow Ochre" since that is what I've noticed what most artists I watch have been using. Can't wait to try this!
I’m new to gouache, and I’m so happy I watched this video before proceeding with the turquoise underpainting and orange cat I had planned. 😬 Thank you so much!
Wow! this was super informative! I had no idea……come to think of it….this explains some of the after effect that i have seen in paintings and could not figure out what it was! thank you do much!
Thank you so much for making this video. The most understandable explanation video for underpainting ever. And I like how you use the same sketch throughout the whole process. It makes it easier to see the difference hence understanding what is underpainting.
First time subscree here... First of all I love you girlfriend. From your videos how clean, smart and professional, your painting skills babygirl amazing I admire the beauty, you have incredible way of setting yourself so smartly and inspiring ....
If your tape is sticking a bit too well to your paper, you can stick the tape to your pants or shirt first to sort of pick up the fibres. Someone taught me that in school and it is a life changer.
i've always been afraid of underpaintings cus they seemed too advanced and daunting but the way u explained it so clearly made me want to totally revamp the way i go about painting with gouache
Thanks a lot for this video! I just started with colours (always draw/paint in black and white) and it really helps to see things that I didn´t look at before. Thanks
thankyou Mary! i enjoyed watching this video, been wondering if i can use an underpainting in gouache and yes, you answered a looot of my questions :)) p.s. your voice is very nice to hear!
I've done this with oil and acrylic but I'm completely new to gouache. I'm really looking forward to trying this technique. I love painting night scenes so I'm psyched to try doing both a cool and a warm underpainting to see how it differs!
I am trained as an animator, but have fallen in love with gauche. I discovered it in undergrad and have finally gotten back to them. Thank you for your video explaining this technique ❤ Always learning! You are appreciated!

I couldn't agree more!
I agree! I love the teaching style.
Yes indeed, very helpful. There are so many demos/tutorials that I like, but don't fully understand why they're doing things in a certain way. This was a really well planned lesson and I will certainly give it a go.
That horse painting was an absolute masterpiece and it was just in between pages - you are so talented !!
My jaw dropped. Absolutely stunning.
Yes would love a tutorial on tips for getting details that small and building scenes like that.

the complimentary one reminds me of children's books that show toys at night with light from the hall shining in
This was so interesting and informative. As a beginner to intermediate artist I found it very helpful. Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
I've tried underpaintings before after seeing other artists using them but never fully understood how they're supposed to work. That has been incredibly informative and easy to follow, thank you so so much! ❤️
thank you for this video! p.s. my cat watched it with me and liked watching your brush move around the screen
Thx for this very useful video. Finally you’ve explained the “why” of an under painting to someone that didn’t go to art school. 🥰
So nice to see a fully qualified professional artist demonstrating on TH-cam, teaching correct information and skills.
I am inspired to experiment with gouache watercolours trying you clever techniques. Thank you.
You made me fall in love with gouache

Very helpful video. I feel like underpainting is basically never discussed and it makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching!

That makes so much sense! It might be why I was frustrated with gouache... it felt flat, but I've never heard of underpainting.
Thank you! I learned a lot. Never used an underpainting before. Looking forward to trying it out.
Have fun!

oh my! I just went on TH-cam ready to type "Gouache tutorial" and before I could, this showed up on my feed! Thanks so so much!!

what a comprehensive tutorial and explanation!
Your painting of those horses is absolutely stunning. I have no words!
Tempted to try my hand at gouache… your video made this possible. Thank you! Great video!
Super helpful tutorial! The side by side comparisons were super useful to be able to see the differences. Thanks!
This was SO helpful. I've been looking for exactly this video for several years now, thank you so much!! Also, happy Canada Day
Super, I love bright vibrant pinks, purples oranges, reds and yellows. I never thought of underpainting with them and I will definitely give it a try!
Ooh. I think this is the video to finally convince me to try under painting and pick up my gouache set.

Such a useful video. Thank you!
This was really helpfull
This is both informative and super relaxing
It's so cool to see someone who went to ACAD as someone who lives in the Calgary area! You make super pretty and adorable paintings
I never used underpainting because I never understood what it was for, but you did a great job of explaining it! I think I'll give it a try
I'm not usually painting with gouache, but you really gave me a good perspective on how I should go about painting w gouache!! Really usefull!!!!
Extremely helpful tutorial! Thank you Mary!
Thank you so much for this video. Really interesting to see the differences!! Will definitely try a few experiments with underpaintings.
Glad it was helpful!
This was so helpful, Mary. I hear a lot of stuff about underpaintings but never why you'd choose one color over the other. Thanks for taking the time!
The hot pink underpainting sounds like a lot of fun and I’ll have to give that one a try! 💓✨🎨👍🏻 Thanks for sharing!✨
OMG ...the Challenge Butter deer, making me want baked goods. Beautiful !
The concept of an underpainting scared me when I saw it elsewhere but you made it look so fun and simple! Hello fellow Canadian and thank you ❤
this really simplified it for me! i have trouble focusing when it comes to learning with paint, but this helped me a lot!

This is very insightful. The underpainting helps convey a different mood and atmosphere depending in which colors you use. Thanks for this tutorial. ❤

For dark or night scenes purple or dark green look absolutely amazing as well. Or if you paint things with a sort of mystical other-wordly vibe to it.
