Learning how to create dog portrait drawings is a great step toward being a pet portrait artist. Pet portraits can be made in so many different ways, people sell pet portraits from procreate, oil painting pet portraits and, of course, pastel pencil pet portraits.
This class shows you the techniques and the theory required to draw good pet portraits in any medium. Drawing a dog pet portrait with pastels uses the same art theory as drawing a pet portrait in procreate! Learn the fundamentals of drawing dog pet portraits and use it in your favourite medium easily - enjoy guys!
Hi Emily rose what a lovely painting 🖼️ of this lovely dog 🐕 love all of the details in the painting 🖼️ yes I used to learn my uncle he was like 👍 you for detail painting now I’ve got you guys and your all brilliant David 🖼️🇬🇧❤️👌👍🐕
Beautiful work! I wish you had the original inserted in the video all the time to compare along the way.
I have never been interested in pastels as i usually work with acrylic paints, but your videos have inspired me to give it a go. Thank you.
I'm starting with pastelmat, this will help me a LOT ... I appreciate your time and gorgeous work!
Outstanding, informative and very helpful. Thank you.
A very good, informative video with clear useful information, I understand you don't strictly follow your reference but I would have liked to see it (at least sometimes) as your working to get a better idea of your thought process. Thank you - beautiful work.
What a great portrait. Thank you for sharing how you worked.
You have totally inspired me to move from watercolour painting to trying pastels. I'm so excited. I would be interested in seeing the source pic as it would help understand some of the colour choices, shading, etc., but love your style and instruction. Thank you.
Thank you Brenda! Yes, I will be including the images going forward so people can better understand what's going on!
Thank you so much, this is so much help. You're quite the artist!
Must say from start to finish it was a pleasure watching you work thank you, Arthur
Looks amazing ,you have now inspired me to get my pencils ,brushes etc out of the attic and start once again .
Fantastic work and I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing it. Lovely music too.
Thank you so much! I am beginning to work in watercolor pets and wildlife and your pastel work is so instructive in fur textures and directions. You really very gifted!
Thank you. Never really understood pastel until now. You've been an inspiration. Keep producing classes as they are so informative. Good luck with your move and new studio
Beautiful
Perfectly done. Love it. Thank you
Thanks so much Shelley!
I loved your tutorial, thank you
Extremely beautiful! thank you for this great video I really appreciate the colors/numbers information.
Glad it was helpful Michelle!
This is a charming portrait. Thank you!!
Thank you Claire, I have to say the photo had a lovely pose
So detailed, the textures, the shading, the lightning, everything is perfect, Thanks for sharing this masterwork tutorial!
Thank you so much Josue, that’s so kind of you 😊
Brilliant thanks. Would love to see more. I like the simple way you describe what you're doing as you draw. I have learnt alot from watching it, only on my phone but it will help mr when I start drawing my 3 collies no longer with me and also the bouncy collie at home! Thanks Emily.
Thank you Janet 😊 the best of luck with your three portraits!
That’s beautiful work thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you!
Great tutorial.
Great tutorial video and just wanted to compliment you on your talent & artistry also commend you for sharing your gift with everyone , Thank you so much xx
Thank you!
Beautiful work
Would love to learn more 😊
Wonderful video, thank you so much. Really informative in a way I can understand! Learn so much, looking forward to watching more.
Thank you, that's really kind! It's always good to try and practice new theories to test them out so I hope you find they make a difference for you :)
Just starting with pastel pencils, I usually use coloured pencils, and your tutorials are really helping, Thanks!!
Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Your videos are such an asset ! Thank you for your sharing this with us! Can I make a request? I would love to see, how you would draw a rough collie with pastel. I find the long white fur particularly difficult to achieve. I haven’t been drawing for that long either, but I would really like to draw my collie and learn, how to make it.
Wow this is great and so informative. Thank you
Thank you so much Wendy!
Absolutely beautiful!! I learned a lot about underpainting watching this video. Thank you so much for sharing. You're right about learning things by watching other artists videos. Techniques are very good.
Thank you!
Fantastic!😍
Thank you Ruth!
Fantastic tutorial, very well explained, I have most of the pencils required but feel from the way you describe the colours and why you use them I feel confident that if I have a missing pencil I could choose one that will do the same job.
Glad it was helpful!
Love this! ❤❤❤
Thank you Abby!
This is exactly what i want to learn! I want to improve my drawing skills and drae beautiful animal portrets. It's really good that you show and tell what you do in your drawing, because unfortunately i don't have a mentor who can teach me all the skills. Many thanks for this video!🥰
Thank you so much! To be honest, my mentor didn’t teach me art but he was an amazing inspiration and ‘kick up the back side’ to get exhibiting and gave me wonderful tips for how to run an art business. I was so lucky 🥰 my artistic techniques are mostly learnt through TH-cam 🤫
You are a great inspiration and love your work. I would love to see you draw a Maltese in pastels
Thank you!
very good
Great to finally see a pastelist giving live commentary (rather than dubbing in a voice-over afterwards). I've grown to HATE the voice over, mainly because they end up saying the same thing in every video and we don't get to see the mistakes and how they're fixed. Well done. Great video and lovely artwork.
Thank you so much! I have to say, I much prefer just talking through it as I go...I wouldn't give as detailed commentary otherwise. It's how I film all of my full length classes so they're always pretty long by then end! Thanks for watching :)
I too do animal portraits. I usually use Watercolour pencils. I just started using Pastel pen. I’d love to see a video how you do different clients. Any tips you could offer would be a real treasure to me! Love your portraits!
I would love to learn how to be a pet portrait artist ❤
Hi I have just started with pastels absolutely loving them.... this video was brilliant thank you . would love a video on framing if possible.. thanks
Thank Patricia! For framing, get a double mount (matting in the US) as this will keep it away from the glass 😊
I love your work! I am just really getting started with pastels. I too learned how to paint on TH-cam. So many awesome artist such as yourself. I just recently (this week) learned that you can use watercolor as a background to colored pencil. I now have two pieces in process of a small Nothern Saw whet owl. One PanPastel on pastel mat to be finished off with pastel pencils and same subject with a watercolor background that I will attempt to finish off in colored pencil. Wish me luck, both are a first! So could you do an owl? I’ve watch a lot of videos. More than sixty artist. I understood you better than the rest on this subject. Sweet! Happy painting!
Hi Donna, wow, that sounds like a brilliant project! I haven't used watercolours for the underpaintings myself but heard other do it. I do have an owl tutorial on Gumroad but as they take a few days to film I'm not quite at the stage where I can give that content for free on TH-cam yet, sorry! Hopefully one day I'll be able to provide more long-form lessons here :)
Thank you for the free excellent tutorial, I would love some instruction to draw Lhasa Apsos- I have two
They're beautiful dogs! I have a Shih Tzu on here which has similarities in the approach :)
I learned so much and what a gorgeous dog ! How do you sharpen your pastel pencils?
I have a border collie that looks very similar. Tfs
Thank you!
I would LOVE info about how to go about building your clientele. You mention lucking out and having a wonderful mentor. I am self-taught and a major homebody but am slowly building my commission clientele but would love your suggestions. ❤
Hi Cassie, how are you doing with it all? Yes, getting going it was luck but building the rest of it became trial and error. I would suggest that you have two most easy to access options. Number one, market yourself in the 'old fashioned' way. Word of mouth is still incredibly powerful and still brings me commissions even though I no longer accept them. Get yourself to some local dog shows, craft fairs and markets with a beautifully designed stand and examples of your actual work. Try to have examples in all the sizes you offer, have a means of showing people the different breeds you've already drawn so when someone mentions their friend has a Labrador, you can show them one you've done. Build up an email list at these events and keep in touch with your new potential clients. I would have an instagram to go with this and this of it as your digital community - I got lots through there. The second option, or something you can do in addition, is to go and learn a bit about SEO and get a basic website. This is harder to do if you haven't got any idea about it, but I would start reading up none the less. Neil Patel is a great resource for beginners and for more advanced, the podcast Authority Hackers is excellent. Whatever you do, always make sure your prices are on show and transparent. If people have to get in touch for a price, because you're worried the number might scare potential people off, nobody will email to find out how much it is. Build a workflow, a waiting list, a ts and cs and anything you can think of to do with customer care to ensure that your service is as good as it can be from start to finish. If you do that, people talk and commissions will come in!
Oils you please show the name of the yellowy coloured Pastel pencil you use under the white ? I can’t quite understand what your calling it and what brand it is?. I love how it works under the white! Thank you, Maxine
Love how you explain the world of pastels to novice thank you. Question; your paper, is it sanded paper if so what grit or details besides brand? Thank you!
Hi Daisy! No, the paper is a Clairefontaine pastelmat, it's almost like a flocked fabric to touch and a bit soft but excellent to work on :)
I love how you paint and how you explain! I started with coloured pencils not so long ago, and I am thinking about picking up pastels too, and you'll be a great artist to learn from! The portrait looks fantastic!🤩
P.S.: I was listening to the brands you use and... Do you personally see any disadvantages to sticking to just Faber Castell? They are the only of those brands that don't use animal ingredients and for me, this is an absolute must. I also know that Derwent pencils and pastels are vegan, you mentioned that they are trickier to work with, but the quality and the pigment vibrancy seems quite good, right?
Hi, you could certainly do portraits with just one brand, I know artists that do. Derwents might help you out with colour 'gaps' but I would resist using them for too much of your work. They would be best for the underpainting as they are so soft, but, the colours can be a bit chalky!
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 Thank you so much for your answer, I'll keep this in mind and I will try to use Derwent just for concrete things!
I tried color pencils a while ago as part of a course and I really didn't like them. I found the process to be extremely slow and monotonous. So I tried pastels a few weeks ago and- wow - what a difference! My only issue is how to frame them. You obviously need glass over them, but there needs to be a space because the material can't touch the glass. Is that right?
Yes, you're quite right! Get a double mount, that's the easiest way :)
Thank you for this tutorial. The details re pencil choices and your methods have been really helpful😃. Also, I would love to watch a class on promotion and marketing as a pet portrait artist. I have done a few commissions but know very little about that topic.
Thank you so much for your comment! I’m glad this was useful and agree that taking it from one or two commissions to a business is quite a step to take, but totally possible 😊
Agreed! That masterclass would be fantastic :D
Do you have a drawing where you sketch it out and then color it in
Hei! Love your work! For now I have just canson mi-teintes paper, and find it difficult to get lighter colours on top, still when try to keep underlayer thin. Have you used this paper and how much easier it gets when using pastelmat?
Pastelmat is such a different experience, I can’t begin to describe! I’m going to do a video on it in a few months but get some pastelmat and you’ll understand how you can layer things 😊
Hi Emily, how do you do your sketch before painting ? I love your pet art. You inspired me.
Thank you! You can simply transfer a drawing from a photo or a sketch. I wouldn't sketch directly onto this paper as marks don't lift off easily (and I don't usually add in backgrounds). I usually on sketch simple birds free hand onto this paper. I have a video for transferring a drawing on this channel :)
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 thank you Emily.
Omg this is amazing please could you let me know where you get your pencils from
Hi Angel, yes of course. It's not an affiliate link or anything but I get mine from a site called Paper Story Art Supplies in the UK :) it's run by a super lovely and really helpful couple
So beautiful. Thank you.
There are typos in your materials list - stabilo and cretacolour 😊
Thank you so much! I’ll fix those later 😊
Is it not easier to start from the top and work down. As I,m terrible for smudging, and it would eliminate having to put a protective sheet over the completed work.
It would be helpful to see the reference image🙂
Thanks for the feedback Bajingo! :)
where can i buy this lesson gumroad does not have it thanks
I wish I could aquire your talent overnight 😢 I am an oil landscape painter, but was just asked by a dear friend to draw her dog that just passed. I said I’d give it a go, but I’m so afraid I’ll fail. Can you give me any advice? I can draw, but I’ve never drawn a pet dog….
Gosh, that's quite the commission to be given! Well firstly, remember they're a friend, if it doesn't work out, don't put pressure on yourself. Secondly, ignore the idea of fur. You're a landscape painter, so think about the bigger shapes, the areas of light and dark, the features and edges that are further away and need to be softer. Use your current skill set on the commission, don't try to change how you work over night, you don't need to. Also remember that if you struggle with the outline, be kind to yourself and use the box method or trace it. This is a gift for your friend, not an art exam :) I hope you enjoy the process, don't aim for 'right first time', aim to enjoy it.
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 I completed it in pastels and charcoal. And it way exceeded my expectations and theirs! I knew that I could draw, but I had never used pastels and especially not to draw an animal. But I just said DO IT! Thank you for the video and your reply!
What is the white pastel pencil you are using? Not the ivory the actual white?
From what I saw it looks like a Caran D’Ache 😊
Hi, I'm restarting my animal portraits again but I've always struggled with the initial outline. What would you recommend or you use to create the accuracy?
Hi! I have just released a video to help you with this...
th-cam.com/video/XQC3zgnPNhg/w-d-xo.html
I would love to do that! please be my mentor :)
Hi, Emily. I really am a bookie lol. With outline art in mind I don’t own. PC or a laptop but I have an iPad. The problem with the iPad I find is that attempting to use your method of tracing on screen wouldn’t work simply because the iPad has a touch screen so the subject would never be still as soon as your skin touches the paper on screen. Any ideas?
Sorry the iPad has a mind of its own. I meant newbie not bookie lol.
Found the solution.
How long did it take you to develop your skills as a pet portrait artist.
This is a really hard one to answer as I've been drawing from a really young age! I got proficient with graphite work first and then found pastel pencils when I was around 17. Since then, I've been using pastel pencils to produce pet portrait works!
I want to know about your master class
I wish I could see the dogs photo while you were working.
Yes, sorry, I’ve changed this on my current videos 😊 feedback is so useful!
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 Thank you.
A course would be wonderful! I notice on your website everything is in pounds…any chance payment could be in USD?
Hi Ruth, as I'm UK-based things are in GBP, again, the website doesn't give me a lot of functionality which sucks for you and for me - sorry! For now ,the only way would be to look up your conversion rates to see the price in USD, sorry about that :(
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 your art is wonderful! I’ve enjoyed every video I’ve watched. I’m really trying to get back to it after a ‘break’ of quite a long time. Thank you.
@@ruthmaier755 Thank you Ruth :) find a good project that really takes your fancy and enjoy it! I might do the same this weekend and draw for pure enjoyment!
Is the line drawing available?
Hi April, as this was a private photo taken by a client I'm afraid it isn't available, sorry.
Primero, creo yo, tienes que demostrar la capacidad que tienes en el dibujo para realizar una clase de maestría en el arte del
dibujo y pintura, o no? En este caso lo hiciste por ahorro de tiempo, o no puedes con el dibujo, tengo esa duda, solo estoy preguntando...
Hi, not sure the translation is 100% but yes I can (and do) draw free hand but not for pet portraits. It would add an extra day of labour and make them much more expensive :)
Lovely!! :)
