  • Clock Master or Clock Slave? A topic with more questions than answers...
    .
    In this week's #tuesdaytutorial, Elliott walks us through the process of configuring 500ADAT as either the Master Clock or Slave of a system as well as demystify how each method can effect conversion performance by evaluating internal vs recovery Clock performance.

    Informative - for real

    Good stuff. The video overall was very coherent other than some reason I had a hard time understanding when you said “500” adat 😂

    I'd love to see a song recorded with each one as the master and then fully mixed and then it would be interesting see if we'd hear enough of a difference. I'm sure there will be a difference but would there be enough of a difference that you wouldn't still want to release the RME mixed version?

    Question, So when changing sample rates, you always have to set the dip to the appropriate rate?

      If the 500ADAT in question has the latest v1.3 firmware installed on it, with it's dip switches set in a specific way, and assuming that the 500ADAT is deriving it's clock from a primary unit, then it can auto-switch it's sample rate when changed by the DAW session/primary unit.

    Is it possible to link up 3 of these units. I am planning on a major up grade but want to keep things condensed. This will work in combination with UA Interfaces?

      Hi there! You can connect up to two 500ADAT's to an Apollo interface provided the Apollo has 2 sets of ADAT I/O (Apollo 8p, 16 etc) In this setup, you will only get the maximum 16 channels when the interface is set to 44.1 or 48kHz and will halve inputs when the sample rate is increased above 48kHz. Hope this helps!

    Will this same scenario work while using UA audio interfaces and Luna DAW?

      Hi there, 500ADAT is indeed compatible with any UA interface - the total integration will vary slightly as some interfaces only have an ADAT Input (UA Twin) or a single pair of ADAT I/O, however any of those interfaces will work with 500ADAT and many of our customers use them with great success! Hope that helps!

    Hang on the disadvantage of having to change the dip-switches to match (at 4.35) if the unit is the master still needs to happen if the unit is a clock slave?.. Or am I missing something otherwise I can't see how it's not a disadvantage either way?

    • @cranborneaudio

      Hi Darren, when some customers set the 500ADAT as the master, they generally want it to the be the clock master at their specific working sample rate (as may recording engineers do not need to change rates often) - some people do choose to set the 500ADAT as the master clock even though they are changing rates with various projects and if that is the case then yes, you will still have to change the sample rate on 500ADAT to match. What the video is referencing there is that if you stick to a sample rate and want to use 500ADAT as your master clock, then you will not have to adjust the sample rate switches constantly, but if your interface is the master and you always switch rates for different projects then yes, you will have to change the sample rate DIP switches to match. Hope that helps!

      @@cranborneaudio Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I often have to change the sample rate depending on the project I’m working with (third parties recording differently). So either master or slave is still have to change it manually to suit that project. Please add that USB integration that gives you controls over this VS crawling round the back. Otherwise looks like a great unit!

    I can’t get my 500r8 and 500adat to work together. The 500adat is receiving signal but I can’t hear it as it doesn’t seem to be sending to my 500r8

    When connecting with ADAT by setting 500ADAT as Master, does audio signal again passes through A/D convertors of RME ?
    I am a noob, so asking, does ADAT connectivity bypasses A/D conversion of any interface, so that one can use interface for its low latency and driver performances only.
    Am i right ?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, sorry we missed this comment! When using ADAT, the conversion happens on the device connected to analogue connections. The signal is converted into Digital, then passed via ADAT into the RME, The RME's converters will have no effect on its ADAT inputs. So this would also mean that if you had a cheaper interface with poor audio performance and connected our 500ADAT to it, you will be using our converters rather than the ones built into the interface - upgrading your performance significantly. Hope that helps.

    hello dear Cranborne team Do you have any video on I/O set up with Protools or how to Use your 500 series Preamp/ Eq/ reverb to be used as plugins in Protools when mixing

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard, thanks for the question! We do not have any specific video using 500ADAT/R8 with Pro Tools and its Hardware Inserts, however the process is the same for 500ADAT as it is with any other interface on the market using Pro Tools. If you have any specific questions, please send an email to our tech support team and they would be happy to help explain how to make it work using Pro Tools! Thanks again, CA.
