  • Run out of inputs and need more I/O from your audio interface? 500ADAT gives you more by using less!
    .
    In this week’s #tutorialtuesday, Elliott walks us through how to expand the capacity of an ADAT-equipped audio interface!
    .
    By making use of your audio interface's optical ports, you can get more channels to record and increase the overall capacity of your system. 500ADAT adds 8 channels of Inputs and Outputs to your Audio Interface as well as a plethora of processing options thanks to its unique 500 series integration.
    .
    In this video, we walk you through the process of connecting 500ADAT to your interface, setting 500ADAT as the clock master, and passing audio in both directions.
    .
    Is my interface compatible with 500ADAT?
    Any interface that features ADAT connectivity will be compatible with 500ADAT however, depending on the exact facilities of the interface you want to use, not all the features of 500ADAT will be available to you.
    1 ADAT In Port (UA Apollo Twin, Audient ID14) = You will only be able to use 500ADAT's ADAT Output 1 only. You will be able to get 8 inputs at Sample Rates up to 48kHz, 4 channels at Sample Rates up to 96kHz. With these interfaces, you will not be able to use the 500ADAT's ADAT inputs for analogue summing.
    1 Set of ADAT I/O (UA Apollo X4, Audient ID22) = You will be able to use 500ADAT for 8 more inputs as well as 8 more outputs on your audio interface. You will be able to get the full 8 channels at Sample Rates up to 48kHz, but only 4 channels at Sample Rates up to 96kHz.
    2 Sets of ADAT I/O (UA Apollo X8, RME UFX) = You will be able to use 500ADAT for 8 more inputs as well as 8 more outputs on your audio interface. You will be able to get the full 8 channels at Sample Rates up to 48kHz, and the full 8 channels at Sample Rates up to 96kHz by connecting both sets of ADAT ports to 500ADAT.

    I’m so excited, I just got my Cranborne 500 ADAT along with 2 Camden 500 preamps. They’re gorgeous! Now, I have 6 slots to fill and have been compiling a list of preamps I want for a few months now. My question is this: One of the preamps on my list is the Meris 440 ($550). The ONLY reason is because it has an effects loop send/return feature for incorporating effects pedals in the chain. Would it still be worth buying because of this feature, or does the 500 ADAT unit already give me the same ability?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Matthew,
      Welcome to the family! Whilst 500ADAT doesn't have a dedicated effects loop with send/return. You could set up your 500ADAT and your DAW to get similar results. Check out this tutorial:

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Crypout! We love RME gear and In our other video we explain why 500ADAT might be better as a master or slave depending on your interface - we use my own UFXII as the example! When it comes to master clocks, there are lots of factors to consider as an interface's recovery clock (when set to slave) is often poorer than when it is master whereas 500ADAT has best performance in either mode. But you can use it in whichever way you like 👍

    Love my 500 ADAT, had a quick question that I'm not sure I saw addressed in the manual. I have a BAE preamp eq module that takes three spaces, If I place it in slots 1,2,3, can I set 2 & 3 to bypass and still use those channels as inserts or line in on the back? And if I then want to link that Bae module to something in slot 4? Say a compressor, do I need to switch the link across all of the slots? Would that negate the inserts?

      Hi Chris, I am researching on 500 Modules and Lunchboxes. Your question is very interesting. Do you have an answer already? I would like to know. And congrats to the BAE 1073D module, that one is a gem. I would have another question. How to use a Stereo channel EQ or Compressor module for this 500 ADAT? Is it possible to dedicate an SSL Bus Compressor to a Stereo Drum Bus in a DAW? Thanks

    All via a set of two cables compared to patching. Amazing. Can you elaborate on latency and with the inbuilt converter, the crossover distortion?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Tau! We do not publish Crossover Distortion in our specifications because it is vanishingly low... that's easy to say I know! The THD of our device gets better and better as the level drops. There are no sudden peaks or THD hotspots and we have designed the circuit to ensure that THD is smooth, consistent and stays low at low levels, only to increase if things get too hot. Sorry I can't give you more information there but all I can do is assure you that it is very, very low indeed! Thanks again! CA

    So... if I use an adat expansion unit, am I still using the converter on the unit it is expanding? For example, if I plug a mic into a preamp on the 500ADAT, which is then routed through to a (lets say) Apollo x4, then that signal is using the A/D converter card in the Apollo?

    • @yeahyeahyeah489

      I believe the 500ADAT is doing the converting and sending the digital signal through ADAT cable and through the interface into the computer.

    Is it possible to use 2 stereo units in the same slots if each unit is bypassed when the other is being occupied. For example, if I have my saturation unit going out via XLR and my SPL big inserted in the same 500 series slot.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Rich, I believe you have also just received an email response to this, but for others who may be interested in the answer, if we have understood you correctly; slots are either bypassed or not, and cannot operate in both modes at the same time. Additionally, since the input source for the slots can only be USB or Analog, it's not possible to separate or split the I/O in the way you described. If a module is present, the audio signal always passes through it. We hope this helps.

    Hi! I'm slightly confused and would apprecierade some help : )
    I wonder - would the 500adat act as an 8 ch in/out expander even without any modules installed in it, basically function like a normal converer with adat io?
    So in practice I could connect a bunch of syntezisers to the line inputs at the back of the 500adat, connect it to RME UFX II with adat and do standalaone mixing via RME or daw recordings if I wish to?

    • @WalkerMasuda

    Is it possible to use the 4 mic pres on RME UFX 2 in slave mode and extend the amount of mic pres available (eg: want to record drums with 8 mics) also is it possible to do this without having to buy modules installed in it or in other words does this have phantom power for each of the channels?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jordan, sorry fo the late reply! With 500ADAT and the UFX together you can record up to 12 channels - effectively using the UFX's channels as extra preamps, but you cannot connect microphones directly to 500ADAT without any modules being installed. The slots only support line-level sources when they are bypassed - but that being said, you could use any preamp - from any mixer, another audio interface or similar and then connect the output of that device into 500ADAT. Hope that helps!

    I there any option to insert 19 outboard gear? for example, if I want to use dat channel 7/8 for my SPL St Comp, how do I connect th unit to the CB 500? And if I want to use my LA-610 via adat channel 2, is this also possible? thx

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, each channel has it's own TRS input. So you would connect your SPL Comp to the inserts on channels 7/8, and that would record into your DAW on ADAT channels 7/8. The inserts come AFTER the module slot in the 500ADAT signal flow, and each insert is still available if you have no module installed and the slot bypassed.

      Hi guys, the summing mixer on 500R8/ADAT is a clean, high-headroom mixer and so isn't designed to impart character by itself (although many claim that it sounds great!). But the best thing about these units is that you can create you own summing mixer! Load the unit full of tasty preamp modules and you have a nice vintage-style summing mixer. Load it full of EQ's and you have a summing mixer with more power. You can create any style of summing you want using the 500 series format! Hope that helps!

    Great video! One question though, what buffer size would you use when connecting to an apollo twin usb? I like to record at 48kHz.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! The buffer size will not have any effect to 500ADAT and how it process the audio - the buffer size is set by the interface and you will need to pick the optimum setting for either tracking or mixing. 500ADAT processes audio in the same amount of samples at high or low buffer sizes, the differences you will hear in latency will be coming from the Apollo and so your process may not be too different to how you have it set currently! Hope that helps!

    • @380stroker
      @380stroker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always use the maximum buffer size for both recording and mixing regardless of sample rate as latency is a non-issue when using something else other than your interface for monitoring.

You could record all channels separately, or you can create chains (Pre, EQ, Comp etc) when recording or mixing to process your tracks. What's also cool is that if you have a preamp, EQ, and Compressor in slots 1-2-3, you can record ADAT ch3 to record the effects whole chain, ADAT ch2 to only record the Preamp and EQ, or ADAT Ch1 only to record the preamp, or finally, you can record all 3 ADAT channels to get a full 'undo' in your DAW if you later decide your comp settings were aggressive during tracking! I wonder if the ADAT cable keeps the audio quality as a normal TRS/XLR cable does

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi @preciseaudioblog, it's a tricky comparison as ADAT is of course a digital audio transportation method, whereas a TRS connection is all-analogue so neither really 'sounds better' than the other. Most importantly with ADAT and a closed system like 500ADAT is that it is handling all of the A/D D/A conversion into your audio interface via ADAT using its own superior converters in addition to the line inputs on your audio interface - giving you more IO to play with. On a traditional system with TRS cables between a rack and interface, you are not only wasting all of your analogue IO just for your 500 series rack, but the audio interface's conversion will be the limiting factor on the setup. Not to mention issues such as maximum input levels, impedances, balancing and other variables there are with an all-analogue system, vs our hybrid setup. So in theory, our system can sound better (could be quite a lot better depending on your audio interface) and much more consistent, plug-and-play, and adds to your interface to give you more, rather than waste your analogue I/O. Hope that helps! CA

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Draztiq, quite the contrary! We are massive fans of RME and respect their interfaces massively - the interface in the picture is our own and we love using it. In this video, we show how you can slave our unit both as a MASTER or as a SLAVE and we describe the differences between the the two methods in terms of the impact of jitter and recovery clock of both devices.
      The RME is used as an example interface and ultimately the choice is down to you as the user. However, the numbers we describe in terms of Jitter etc are real numbers published by RME or ourselves. If you compare the numbers scientifically, our clock has less jitter when used in recovery mode and lower jitter when used as the master clock - that doesn't mean that theirs sounds worse or is inferior and isn't intended to be 'cocky' - we are trying to be factual and help you as as a user decide how best to integrate 500ADAT with your interface, Hope that helps!
