    In this weeks #tutorialtuesday, Elliott shows off one of 500R8's most powerful features, the Chain switch! The Chain switch allows you to effortlessly create channel strips of 500 series processing by sending the output of one module into the input of the next to design your very vocal chain, mastering chain, or saturation palette!
    .
    In this video, Elliott also takes us through 500R8's unique pre/post recording feature that allows you to record at multiple points throughout the Chain for advanced processing.

      Thanks @thatscottishdrummer! To be honest, we were the same prior to starting Cranborne - always loved 500 series, but thought the effort to get it integrated neatly with everything else we wanted was a bit of a pain! We all thought, "there must be an easier way!!" and here we are! 🤣

      @@cranborneaudio Nice, yeah great job guys this is making me want to finally get in to some 500 gear... On a side note, I notice you are using Logic which is also my DAW of choice. Does your 500R8 support the new(ish) Audio Device controls right on the channel strips?

      @@bobdrums No problem! We do not support the Audio Device controls as the modules installed to 500R8 are all likely to be analogue modules and the digital controls wouldn't be able to adjust them. Also there are no preamps built-in to the 500R8 and so there would be nothing for them to control. Hope that helps!

    Another question, can you use the n22h headphone amp with this as well? I saw that you could actually connect your mic to the headphone amp and then record the input through the cad5 cable?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes absolutely! Connect the N22H to the 500R8 and you can connect mics directly to the N22H for recording as well as send a monitor mix straight to the HP amp on the N22H! It's a perfect stagebox ready for vocal tracking!

    0:08 I have a question, about using the AMS NEVE 1073LB Pre and EQ when they are Bridge together with the Neve Jumper cable. How could you link the output of 6 into the input of 8? or could you place the Neve EQ on the left side of the neve pre? To maintain the EQ feeding the output transformer of the preamp.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zip! the Link jumper does appear to bypass the input XLR choice of the Neve EQ when in use. This would mean that the source switches/chain switches would not operate for that slot when the Link jumper is connected to the EQ, however If you only ever plan to use the Preamp into the EQ and never anything else then that wont be a problem. In this case, you can bypass the slot that the EQ is inserted into using the rear Slot Bypass switch and this would enable you to use slot 7 as a line-level recording feed, and then chain through slot 7 (with the EQ installed but not used) and into slot 8 - whilst using your Neve stuff as intended! Hope this helps!

    • @zakaroonetwork777
      @zakaroonetwork777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Thank you. So the module still receives power if the internal bypass switch is engaged. Good to know.

    What is the proper way to chain Stereo Modules such as the SSL UltraViolet EQ in Mod 5/6 into SSL G-Comp in slots 7/8?? Do you need to flip the chain on both stereo modules or just 1????

    Is it possible to chain 2 stereo (2 slot) modules, or do I need to create multiple inserts, e.g. using a stereo EQ into a Bus compressor?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      The chain feature is not compatible with stereo modules on 500R8 or 500ADAT as it was really intended for mono modules and creating channel strips. However if you wanted to insert a Bus Compressor into the signal path then you would indeed need two insert cables to come out the back of the unit and into your Bus Compressor to retain the true stereo image. Hope this helps, CA

    I am seriously considering buying this unit for recording vocals, and for using 500 series products. But something I don’t understand is - I have read several comments in other videos saying that you should not track through mic preamps ins this unit. Why is that, if that is even the case? I want to track through a Neve preamp, and then a comp, through this unit, and in to my daw. I am very new to this analog world, but I want to be able to make the best results possible coming out of the gate. SO, is it a stupid idea tracking through preamps on this unit? 🙏

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, we're not aware of any reason why someone wouldn't record like that, I don't think I've (personally) seen those comments. If someone is recording via any other 'standard' audio interface, the microphone is still going through a preamp. With the 500R8, it's simply the case that you're able to choose exactly which preamp you use (and compressor, EQ etc etc)....however we of course advise our Camden 500 preamp and Carnaby 500 Harmonic EQ 😜

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey there! You can chain mono modules without issue (so slots 1-3, slots 4-6) however the Chain will not work on Stereo modules (the logic to skip slots 4-6 and route into slot 7 for example is far too complex for a single switch) So you could chain Slots 1-3/4-6 and then use a small XLR jumper to come out of slots 3/6 into slots 7/8 for some compression. Hope that helps!

      @@cranborneaudio Thanks so much, this was my first question. Glad it was answered directly! As a follow up question... in this scenario, if we wanted to utilize the summing mixer for this example... we would need to pick either 3/6, or 7/8 to send to the summing mixer's analog outs, correct? And if we decided to send 3/6 and 7/8 both to the summing mixer, then we would be effectively doubling the signal (sans the differences created by the modules), is this correct? I'll be purchasing one of these in a few months, so just want to make sure I have the signal path mapped out in my brain so I use it correctly hahaha.
