This looks to be a solid well built ratchet. Worth every bit of the $105 asking price.

Interesting ratchet! My only concern is that unusual gasket, years from now it will be either hard to find or duplicate... Otherwise it is very strong looking and impervious! Great review! Thanks!!!!!!!!

In that case you could probably use a thin bead of silicone Caulk or goop or something.
You could also just cut one from some rubber gasket material, and the nibs that fit into those holes may not be all that crucial.

Yeah that gasket kind of threw me for a loop. I did see they offer rebuild kits for this model now, but who knows if they will in the distant future...

I really like that pawl engagement, all teeth engaged and plenty of contact where it meets the sides.

Throw some superlube in that XL. Such a smooth ratchet for 45 tooth.

It looks like an industrial style of ratchet because Proto is an industrial brand from Stanley, Black and Decker.

That is a powerful PROTO ratchet. Nice looking and very strong and reliable. The thin plate is the only negative I see. Thank you for showing us the tear down! 😁

Looks very similar to the proto ratchats I did not too long ago.
    Well made ratchets!

Nice ratchet. I think it will last a long time and work well.

I'm pretty sure it went the old school pear head, then the big dawg, then the premium (this one) and finally the precision 90(which is the same as the Mac Axis)

I don't know how you could possibly stamp knurling.
I'm not a machinist but I think they're just stopping with one pass of the knurling wheel to cut production time, otherwise it would take 2 or 3 for good sharp knurling.
I don't use much 1/2" but will probably have to add the 1/4" to my 1/4" ratchet collection.

Yes this series of ratchets seems to be well done

Knurling is rolled with pressure being applied as it rolls.. more pressure, better knurling...nobody is doing multiple passes.. it costs enough to do it once..if they were to keep re-doing knurling the price would be astronomical...not that a good American ratchet with single passed knurling is cheap to begin with

If you contact Proto maybe they can help you out even under warranty? I heard their customer service was pretty ok. If not you can check eBay or Amazon

Interesting, I'm looking at getting the 3/8 version. Why didn't you lube it up while you were in there?

What ratchets would you recommend for a millwright?

Hard to say but I’m assuming it’s a more industrial type of trade.probably best suited for professional ratchets.

Made with globally sourced components. Shameful.
