    Outstanding comparison and discussion. Those were so beautiful with the pebbled handle! Great stuff!

    You're right - available brand new on Amazon for $56. A rebuild kit (new style pawl) is $20.

      Yeah one of the oldest continuously made ratchets out there. The S•K roundhead is another one.

    All of them proto/plombs are hand cannons I love them. Very dependable design strong and simple. The raised letters and the pebble grain is my favorite. Hard to find in excellent condition. I saw one on eBay that was flawless for 49.00 I'm still kicking myself but that was in the middle of my Williams collection I am still building just need the "the last of the unicorn" M52 that's what I call it for it's very hard to find but that's the fun of it. Another great video

      Ya gotta grab one man, I had a WF-21 arrive yesterday from eBay I got in an an auction for $18.90 after tax+shipping it looks like it was kept indoors since it was very young and I see literally no wear inside. I already have 2 of the pebbled 5249s also in great shape got those in eBay also, these tools will last longer than we will.

    Very interesting. Timelines are always helpful. Since PROTO's my brand your presentation, here, is particularly informative. Also, seeing the inside of the 85-year-old Plomb is great (a workable technology that has proved the test of time). It will be fun to see what PROTO comes-up with next. Great review, Ty.

    Funny how the oldest ratchet has the best style......Gotta admit I would have never noticed the ambidextrous pawls had you not pointed them out.

      Yeah I gave it a good going over since pebble handles marked PROTO are not that common lol👍

    The longest continually produced ratchet ever.
    I don't think there's any other ratchet mechanism design that has been made continuously unchanged for almost 100 years.
    Minor differences through the years, but you can put brand new PROTO parts in an early PLOMB.
    Professional came after Stanley bought them, and it's what you'll find new today .

      I mentioned to someone else that the S•K roundhead ratchets might be another one that’s still going after like 90 years. Don’t know if there were breaks in production though?

      Production is currently on hold while great star gets all the machines moved into the shop vac factory, half will make Shop vac and the other half will make whatever tools they plan to still make in the USA.
      They have been / were in production for a long time, but changes have been made.
      I know the modern 40970 now has 60 teeth but I belive they used to have much less than that.
      If I'm not mistaken they introduced the finer tooth mechanisms in the 60's during the S-L Wayne era.
      The PROTO has remained the same.

      I bought a Plomb 3/4 ratchet at a estate sale for $2. The back plate was missing, the selector switch was broken and the gear and pawls had some wear. A guy in front of me passed it up. I got it for $2 and since the body/handle was in good shape, I bought a rebuild kit for it and it works good now. I don’t use it but it’s a great show piece. Very cool ratchet.

    One of my favorites. I have some sealed Proto repair kits with screws with the star washer. Don’t know what year but the anvil was chromed.

    I miss the raised lettering, as opposed to stamping, which is maybe a little cheaper to produce (?), and especially compared to the more recent, shallow "engraving". Thanks for the historical perspective!

      Yeah I really don’t like the modern etchings like those laser etchings. Light pitting and they are gone.

    Interesting review, a nice historical progressive collection. One nit to pick, though. That one type of pawl was double-sided, not ambidextrous.
    Ambidextrous means to be able to use the right hand or the left hand equally well
    If you're referring to an object, it means that the object is able to be used by a right - or left-handed person with equal ease.
    From Latin
    Ambi=both
    Dexter=right right-handed.
    Sorry for the nit picking.
    I do appreciate your reviews. Thanks for sharing. 👍

    The 3rd proto ratchet you showed was made in USA. Mine is identical to it but says 5449 PROTO of CANADA LTD. Is there a way to identify the time the ratchet was made based off of that. Just curious as I am currently rebuilding it to use it in my toolbox. And I believe it is 24 tooth

      I’m not sure 🤔. I didn’t know there was a “Proto of Canada”, I have never seen one.

    What do you know about, the double duty ratchet made by proto for vogel tools?
