This is the longest continually produced ratchet design / mechanism in American history if I'm not mistaken.
You can take the guts out of a 1930's PLOMB ( some early confusion with the plumb company led to the eventual name change to PROTO )and put it in a brand new PROTO ratchet today.
They may be a low tooth count, but they're one of the smoothest mechanisms ever made.
that's why the Ko-ken ratchets are so great, took that great Plomb/Proto design and refined it over the years to make it even better. smoothest ratchets indeed with the lowest backdrag of them all. 😼👍
anyway, my only problems with Proto is their parent company horrendous customer service in my country and the very low availability of Proto stuff.
My dad had one that's over 50 years old froze up I called Proto last year and they sent me a rebuild kit

Those Proto ratchets are awesome. Always have been and always will be. I use my 1/2" 24" long ratchet as a breaker bar instead of using an actual breaker bar.
Hes pretty good at it. Hell yeah man. I just like the clackity clack sound and feel of using a chunky ratchet like this
As stated below, do not use grease in this type of ratchet. I have been using Proto ratchets since 1969 and I also collect them. The grease at some point will get full of dirt or harden with age or cold conditions. When this happens, the pawls cannot fully engage the drive wheel and causes wear to the tips of the drive wheels teeth and failure. I was a engine mechanic for 32 years at my last job. At the end of my work week I would flush out the inside of the ratchet, re-oil and then hang the ratchets up to let the excess oil run out. Never had one fail.
Great channel. I have the same ratchet but with the traditional finish, it’s badass. I always use a few drops of 80/90 weight gear oil and a few drops of 3 in1 oil when I service my ratchets. This works great for years but sweats oil for a while. I never use grease because grease releases the oil that it contains over time but once all of the oil is released the grease tends to gum up and cause issues sometimes.

My WW2 Wright Field Plombs (plural) are even the same design.
24 teeth but all 3 (number 4 is still in its wax paper) smooth as butter. Used SuperLube and no issues so far. Makes them smoother and quieter than anything else!
One more thing Stanley Black and Decker does own Proto and MAC tools. They also own Craftsman and DeWalt. Proto and MAC are both produced in Dallas Ft. Worth TX. In the same facility. In some instances on the same assembly lines. Also Proto and MAC also outsource their tools some of their tools are imported.
I set molds for a injection molding company and i use mostly proto tools i have this ratchet and its a damn tank im not a fan of putting a cheater pipe on it but i have and it handles it well im not afraid of breaking it
Coal mines use these ratchets and they take abuse beyond all reason and still work great
i am big plumb /proto fan. i still keep buying them. do not even know how many i own, i think around 65 . they just feel like a great tool

What's cool is the proto repair kits will work in the pebble style plomb ratchets. They have the smoothest and most consistent ratcheting action even though its course toothed. Proto and plomb ratchets are heavy duty as hell.

Black ratchets are fine, black sockets are not. Not that you can’t see the markings on them, if you drop em they’re harder to find lol
Be careful using greases for ratchet lube. The grease dries out over time and will cause the ratchet to work poorly. A light machine oil is the best lube for ratchets.
Get the Proto precision 90 for a 1/2" drive flexhead. It's the same as the mac axis but it has a knurled handle.

The new Proto precision 90 is the same as the MAC Axis ratchet. The difference is the Proto version has a knurled steal handle, if you want a fine tooth flexhead ratchet, that's the way to go! The only draw back to the Proto precision 90 is that it doesn't come with a locking flexhead model. If you are on a budget check out Gearwrench they now offer a 90 tooth flexhead ratchet, also check out from Harbor Freight their ICON 90 tooth ratchet. Im not a fan of ICON, their sockets suck I'd go Tekton, Gearwrench or Carlyle for sockets, if you are on a budget. ICON ratchets are pretty solid. If you like the older Snap-On 36 tooth ratchets, check out JH Williams they also make a flexhead model and are made by Snap-On without the price tag.
I also am giving all my China tools to my son. I am upgrading my personal tools mostly made in USA types. 👍
I have the new Proto 90th. L flex....great ratchet. What is your opinion of the S&K lp9o ratchets?
Great video, Williams makes some good 1/2 ratchet USA, I never had problem with Williams tool line. Proto has a 90 tooth flex ratchet just the same as MAC tools axis ratchet.
I think the mac axis ratchet will be my next purchase
Tools and Trash I have the Mac 3/8 flex head and I like their comfort grip in cold weather.

@@toolsandtrash6911 my only concern was the size of the head on the ratchet. I use proto torque wrenches in aviation and they are pretty solid.
Theres a lot of motorsport people I know go teng tools. I also went that way and Milwaukee for power tools. Teng supposed to be a comprise for cost and performance. What's your thoughts ?
I've never used teng tools but ik most of it is made in Taiwan and it's still a little pricey some of the stuff is clearly rebranded. In curious as to what the warranty is like

Not a great design, go with low profile Capri or Williams flex head. They have a much more robust design.
This Proto has similar internals (dual pawls) the Harbor Freight or Tekton (cheap) ratchets use. Good for light to medium service.

Wow.... never heard that before. Proto is used in oilfields, mines, even on the space shuttle. Car mechanics dont seem to know much about them. Being a fabricator/heavy equipment mechanic I've used snap on mac Matco etc and proto stands alone as far as durability. U dont get no bells and whistle no fancy bullshit but put cheater pipes on them hit them with sledge hammers use them to pry with etc and they do eventually fail but u really got to work at it. Back when I worked on concrete trucks I would put a proto breaker bar 3/4 drive , on the bolts on the front pedestal ,the several hundred pound weldment that supports the front of the barrel on rollers, make sure it was on the bolt real snug and push on it with the forklift mast. With a 5 foot cheater and that after I would heat them. I done that at least once every week or 2 for several years and didn't even bend it. If I was ever underneath a piece of equipment in situation where tool failure could severely injure or kill me, proto is the brand that I would count on first
