  • Get the Proto Duratek Screwdriver at Amazon here --- www.amazon.com/...
    Proto claims that these new screwdrivers can withstand extended exposure to many of the harshest shop chemicals that mechanics will encounter on a daily basis, and will sustain no immediate damage from becoming contaminated with them. This is due to the brand new Nylon Alloy technology that they made the Duratek handles out of.
    I dont just take their word for it, I actually subject these to 24 hours of soaking in the various chemicals with surprising results.
    These are 100% made & assembled in the USA, and are one of the latest offerings from PROTO.
    Check out the review, I think you will be impressed with the quality & durability of these Duratek screwdrivers.

    I have a screwdriver in my box that has a fuzzy handle. Sprayed it with brake cleaner after a job. Just a quick spray softened the plastic so much that when I wiped it with a shop towel it pulled fibers out of the paper. The fact that screwdriver survived overnight in brake cleaner impresses the shit out of me.

    More than I care about how the handles hold up. I'm more worried about the performance of the tip of the screwdriver.

      The best tip in the world is useless if the handle is dissolved. He was testing Proto's claim about the durability of the handle, not just doing a tool review.

    Great review, Ty. Your analysis is VERY helpful. Next time, also try a screwdriver in battery acid, paint thinner, and Berryman B-12 (these chemicals also appear around my work bench and in the warehouse). Wonder how these handles deal with extreme heat (like on a hot manifold or near an acetylene rig) or a hard freeze?

    Great video! Thinking of getting the Mac version of these but undecided on whether to get the Mac (hard) vs the Soft (rubberized) grip. I work on cars and seems like the Mac handle will hold up better over time. Thoughts?

    Since your into automotive I'd like to see you do a review on a torque multipler. They are great for taking lug off tractors and semis. Around 4,200 ft.Lbs. of torque. No air or electric needed just a simple crank on the handle with your hands. Great for when your away from power and in need lots of torque .

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen those, I dont typically work on huge things like buses or semis, but it is interesting to see that much torque being applied by hand with one of those low gear ratio hand crank multipliers. I think they would be more effective at removing lugs than installing them, since it would be so easy to damage the studs by overtightening them.

    • @joelopez6525
      @joelopez6525 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Torque multipliers come in handy on some automotive applications but very few that I have come across. I forget which car I was working on but it had a crank dampener bolt that had 400ish ft/lbs torque requirement. It had to be torqued back to same spec. Since we did not have a 3/4" torque wrench an ex diesel tech had a multiplier with a 4:1 ratio and with an adapter and a smaller torque wrench we were able to multiply the small output torque to the greater required spec. P.S. I wish I could afford all Proto grade tools but because they are more industrial grade I usually have to settle for the BlackHawk or Stanley. Commitment to the Mac truck scared me.

  • @prgoza
    @prgoza 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would have liked to see you continue with more trade based chemicals (since these are "industrial" tools, they may come into contact with many types of industrial chemicals) i.e. Lacquer thinner, paint thinner, some type of caustic (drain cleaner), alcohol and even hot water - as hot as would come from a hot radiator. Great video. Thanks

    Good video bro! You didn't mess around with these tests. Poor screwdrivers.Great stuff. Next time you do a similar test throw some ordinary screwdrivers that weren't designed for this type of abuse just to see how much better something like these are if at all.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I actually tried that with a couple of them.....regular screwdrivers literally melted & turned to mush when placed in the brake cleaner, it was quite a weird site. Think of chewing gum on hot pavement. The problem was that it leached all of the color out of the cheapo screwdriver & turned the fluid red.

    • @ToolCraze

    Quick question. What is the chrome like on yours? I bought the 8 piece combo set, and the chrome one the #1 Phillips has a strange look to it. Almost like it was over chromed. And a couple of the others are kinda dinged up. Kinda bummed. Spent like $75.

    I've been using Proto tools since the 1970's and I never regretted spending my money for any Proto tool. They are tough and not ridiculously priced for such a well built "darn great" tools. I have never have a negative thought about passing them down the family line".

    Did you use neat glycol or a premixed coolant solution ? My biggest concern with flammables indoors isn't fire but explosion. I know it's not PC, but in the past I've used solvents that would soften ANY handles; you can't do it now wiz OSHA - thank God. Good mechanics' screwdrivers!

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jester Mclarpet The coolant was just a regular 1 gallon jug of universal antifreeze from Advance Auto Parts. I didnt store any of these inside for the 24 hour test.....I kept them in a covered carport, for that very reason.....I want zero fire risks. And I do have multiple fire extinguishers around the shop just in case ;)

  • @Fedwrench
    @Fedwrench 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, so they have superchemical resistant handles, how are they as screwdrivers? how's the fit, feel, balance? tips durable? I noticed you didn't have the bolstered set. perhaps a second test aimed as screwdriver function is needed. good job!!

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fedwrench - The Duratek line is based around the newly designed nylon handles. I dont think that there is anything extra-special about the shanks/tips themselves that would be much different from other pro-grade screwdrivers, and I thought that adding clips of me installing/removing screws was a bit much. I did talk about the feel at the end of the video, and I do like them a lot....they are very comfortable to use.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** With this being on the same track as Fedwrench's comment, the Duratek line is different because of the nylon injected handles that are extremely chemical resistant. If chemical resistance isnt a big deal to you, then these most likely are not the choice you would go with anyway.....or it would at least knock a HUGE selling point off the table.
      That being said, keep in mind ALL of the people who question reviews authenticity on a regular basis (i.e -- you didnt use "new fluid" or "how do we know what you poured in the jars"). By showing me pouring the liquids, there would be no question that the video was faked.

      They are the same, Stanley owns both mac and proto and there are a lot of the same tools throughout both lines. The upgraded models of these with the hex bolster on the shaft are about the same price from both companies, maybe 20 bucks more from Mac for a set. I have a couple ratcheting Mac grip screwdrivers and I love em

    • @everettclunie3525

      +kg king I have some of those too. I wouldn't say they're better. If you're a snap on guy then I'd say go for snap on. I also got the Mac grip version of this set with the bolsters because they just came up on promo sale. These are more resistant to harsh chemicals for sure, but the snap on's are more comfortable to use. Either way you get a great driver, but if you don't mind the extra 20-30 bucks for the set than get snap on.

    Would the brake cleaner rust new bolts overnight?

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Ponce Brake cleaner will completely eat away all oils/grease/etc on anything & then evaporate....leaving it exposed. It wouldnt be the brake cleaner that would cause bolts/metal to rust....it is the absence of the protective layer of oil that allows the rust to form quickly. Bare metal will rust almost instantly (i.e. -- a cast iron engine head will immediately rust once you clean one to the bare metal with brake cleaner).
