  • This is the New J5450HTC precision 90 tooth Ratchet, a fairly new lineup from Proto. Since proto is in the Stanley Black and Decker universe this is going to be VERY similar to the newer Mac tools Axis Ratchets, but we'll have a look anyways!

So I usually go all in when doing reviews 👍 I don't think Stanly Black and Decker is going to be throwing me any money any time soon but I agree they should 😁 Thanks for watching!!!

    I think Proto should have made a replacement upgrade kit for their older line of pear head ratchets that go back to the late 1930's. There is many thousands of the older ratchets still in use today. I own 71 of them myself not counting my Plomb and P&C ratchets that share the same internal parts. If Proto could make a 90 tooth replacement kit to be fitted to the older ratchets, they would sell a lot of them and probably sell more of those than the newer ratchet.

    Proto's handle is probably the best design of the high tooth count ratchets. Nice video!!

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Fedwrench Yes, this one takes it for sure but we're it not for the knurling I think SK would take the cake. The way the SK fits the hand is just... Its absolutely the most comfortable metal handle ever, but pound for pound, Proto wins for knurl and all their drive sizes are released already, hehe😂

      Proto ratchets

  • @badbiker666
    @badbiker666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was a kid, all my buddies were using S-K tools. They were affordable, had a lifetime warranty, and were available at all the local hardware and auto parts stores. We were unaware of the Snap-On, Mac, or other "tool truck" brands because we weren't aware of tool trucks. All the stores were mom and pop types because the big multi-store chains hadn't become a thing yet, so they carried what would sell and that was S-K. Well, Proto tools were well known to us, but they were the "high end" that all of us aspired to but none of us could afford. Our dads had the Proto tools and occasionally one of the guys would borrow his dad's for a project, but this was rare. As a result, I really want one of these ratchets! The problem? I already have a full complement of ratchets from S-K, Craftsman, Snap-On, Mac, Vulcan, Easco, and Indestro Super. I don't need a ratchet. But MAN do I want one, especially after watching this video. Well - maybe there's room for one more in the box, Eh?

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There sure is, especially when the upgrade gives you a high tooth count ratchet

    • @sophiasocal68

      Reminds me of the mental wrestling match I have when I'm looking at shoes 🤣🤣
      Do I NEED them, of course not, have 25 to 30 pair of shoes at any one given time. Maybe there's room for 1 more pair in the closet!!

    • @badbiker666
      @badbiker666 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sophiasocal68 That really is the same thing. Every time I go to the box, I try to determine which ratchet is better suited to the job at hand. But, honestly, I could make do with just one ratchet. My wife has horses. I have one pair of barn boots. She has eight. Same thing every time. "Which boots should I wear today?" She asks. It really doesn't matter, but I guess it's fun to try and justify the purchases.

    Ooh mama that knurling on the handle just sold it to me!! I’ve got the Nepros 90 tooth and a Stahlwille 1/2” so I don’t need this at all but the knurling pshhhh I’m a sucker for knurling.

    I always liked how PROTO ratchets have a decent size grip for an all steel ratchet.
    That's something I like about the classic Craftsman teardrop QR ratchets.

    I have the 3/8" regular length and the 1/2" long-flex. Both are very good ratchets. I wouldn't recommend taking them apart because, as I learned too late, getting the gasket back into place is a son of a bitch.

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Aaron M I found that out as well but I figured out a cheap trick in the process! I put that front gasket in the freezer for about 15 minutes, it was a little easier to get back in after that😁 Do you have the Mac or Proto versions?

    This ratchet along with the MAC version look to me, to have a similar design to the New HF ICON 90 ratchet. It would be interesting to compare the two.

    • @michaelmangino9819
      @michaelmangino9819 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mac axis 90tooth and icon feel identical to the feel of the gears spinning In the head. The icon may be a, tad easier turning. I compared them both side by side. I swear there the same exact internals inside. That's what it sure feels like. Now I paid 30$ for the 7.6in ICON. AND 96$ for the MAC axis! Go figure. Both are 3/8 drive

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All you would have to do is open the Icon. I already showed the internals in this video, but I doubt they are the same.

  • @harleyadam4813
    @harleyadam4813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the handle design on that ratchet better than most. The knurling is a nice touch and I, for one, prefer a hand-filling handle. I only have medium-sized hands, but I prefer my tools to have a lot of heft in hand. I'm the same with guitar necks. I much prefer the old-school baseball-bat necks versus the slim taper profiles. I also really like the gasket sealing on the head and I like the fact that even though is has fine teeth, the anvil/panel design is made for VERY positive engagement and high strength.

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Harley Adam Yeah I Love that knurling, it's just too good and it definitely gets a plus for 4 degrees and another for 17 tooth engagement!

  • @john4kc
    @john4kc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dang. Now I want this one too! I only wish you had shown the anvil turn while assembled and the cover removed so I could see the pawl in action. Nice job on the video!

    When I was in the tool business most of our customers hated knurled handles! I have no idea who Proto sells to anymore? Used to me
    Mostly to industrial. Not sold in stores or on the trucks. Just a Mac Tool ratchet with a couple of minor differences. Plumb tools have been gone for 50 years.

  • @chrislawrence8141
    @chrislawrence8141 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love my Proto ratchets....mine are not 90 tooth version but tough as hell none the less. My favorites in no particular order are Proto Wright tool SK facom and Carlyle....gear wrench gets honorable mention. Armstrong was in there, but it seems like the availability isn't there anymore. Another great video thanks again

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, its too bad about Armstrong. They had a very solid product line. Since Apex shut them down I've been kind of silently protesting Gearwrench by not buying any of it. Buying from their Asian outfit right after they shut their American one down just doesn't sit right with me. Thanks for watching👍

    • @schmojo33
      @schmojo33 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet, at some point SK is going to add knurling to their grips.

    • @tomjones4318
      @tomjones4318 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little bit of knurling goes a long way. Have to wonder why industrial offerings often have knurling you could grate cheese on. Not expected to get all day use maybe. I doubt I'd yank all day on my old SKs. With appropriate bite maybe mechanics would be more likely to use it. Chosing good knurling is not hard.

    It's a looker alright. Great handle, love the USA and flags on it but for $155 it should be perfect and it's a shame it's not. Even the old school Craftsman ratchets had a big beefy switch that was assertive going left or right. No in between. Not sure why so many companies put that small wimpy switch on instead. Especially at this price.

  • @HardKnocksForge

    Do you think the spring that holds the pawl will be the piece that fails in the ratchet, or do you think they designed it that way so that the teeth and pawl can be disconnected and keep from shearing teeth at too high of a torque application?

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the design does prevent tooth damage just due to the pawl. Yeah, its 17 teeth but think about the amount of the circle that pawl is holding on to. From on to off there's only about a 1/4" travel meaning this thing has probably got the most well designed pawl-gear combo because the force can be spread across a larger surface area.

      If you watch AvE's channel at all he actually showed how this fails (shears the anvil) because the internals of this ratchet and the internals of the Mac Axis ratchet are one and the same.

  • @WorkHorseLT

    The mechanism looks like a DeWalt and Craftsman ratchets put together so I'm guessing global materials but assembled here

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Assembled" and "made" have two different set of criteria when it comes to the FTC. Even using "Assembled in America" has to have some USA parts or content. When it comes to "Made in USA with global components" the product still has to have a majority of the parts made in USA.

    I rather have the snap on flex 1/2 and my thought is anything 80 teeth and above are fine but for a 1/2 a snap on 80tooth with do great. But yes it is a very nice ratchet and I would buy over a Mac axis

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +matthew placencia Just for the handle, this over the Mac version all DAY! Now that SK, Proto and Snap on all have fine tooth options, if you didn't have a 1/2" ratchet which one would you choose?

      @chriscas-ToolAficionado 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought you have a mobile box that was....maybe 41" wide? ....but chances are you have other toolboxes to play from. There's always telescopic ratchets from say, Hazet and Facom.

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ChrisCas aka Superautobacs Naa it's 30" wide measuring the outside drawers are 22" wide but I store all my ratchets vertically on the side in the prybar holes. I tried a 25" prybar once; the lid to the cart wouldn't close, but with flex head being an option it might just work.

    • @chriscas-ToolAficionado
      @chriscas-ToolAficionado 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes of course we have SnapOn,it's in every country.
      Professional; Beta,Bahco(some), Draper,Gedore,Facom,Hazet,Knipex,Midlock(special automotive tools)Sonic,Stahlwille,Usag,Wera, etc. And SnapOn
      DIY;
      BGS,Bahco,Mannesmann,Draper, Laser,Silverline and many hardware store housebrands.
      Probably i forget some brands and maybe there is more in Germany,England and France(bigger countries,more people).

  • @AK-ck7cy

    I'm not a big fan of the proto tools. I have them at work. I feel that they are very over priced. They don't last if you use them every day. I have craftsman tools that are older and have lasted better than the proto tools. But that's just me. I personally like to have a too that if I do brake it that I can easily have a place to get another one with not having to go find a tool truck or a long drive just to replace it. So I take that in consideration when I get tools. I am a mechanic. But more and more tools are guaranteed now. So it's a lot better than years ago. All the parts store's sell tools now and most of these are guaranteed to,and are great quality to. Some don't have a great selection but thay do have some good ones that are handy to have. I have a great stubby wrench set from auto zone. Had it for 11 years working great and it has a lifetime warranty on it and it wasn't very expensive. Love your videos.

    • @x1134x

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicholas Smerk Yes, this is going to be quite a bit more expensive than the others you mentioned but keep in mind Proto is geared towards the industrial side of things and it's also made in USA. You can have a look at AvE's video to see how this stacks up against the others because the Proto is identical to the Mac one he tested: th-cam.com/video/KesUkDx-7LI/w-d-xo.html

    • @nicholassmerk
      @nicholassmerk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I forgot he tested that one. I like Proto, but at that price, ehh. I passed up a couple Williams 1/2" ratchets the other day at Hamilton's that I should have put in my stash for next to nothing.

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +chris jones if they have ironed out the kinks I'd say go for the SK, it's all around cheaper and still made in USA, that is unless you want comfort grip you'll be waiting 30 years for that from SK.

    • @chrisjones6165
      @chrisjones6165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Garnett-Tools what were kinks in the sk? Just wondering what to look for or avoid. If not I think I'll go with a half in flex head comfort grip from snap on.. feel like I just did my red Ryder BB gun speel for Xmas 😂
