    Thailand's military detained former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday in the latest development of the country's unraveling political crisis.
    The army, which is consolidating its grip on Thailand following Thursday's coup d'état, barred 155 prominent citizens from leaving the country.

    Something that I feel a lot of people here don't understand is that this is nothing out of the ordinary. Thailand has a long history of military coups. Ever since the revolution of 1932, Thailand has had a coup every couple of years, with just a few periods of relative peace in between. But these coups are not like those you see really anywhere else. These coups usually come as a result of the military seeing the government as being too corrupt, which it often is. When this happens, and the military decide to do something about it; they take over the country, mostly peacefully, the vast majority of corrupt politicians leave either politics, or the country altogether, and after a while the military gets bored with civil administration, and new elections proceed. It's a lot like the regular floods that Thailand gets, it washes away the shit, and the people are happy for it.

      Anton VD Why would the Thai military want to rule this time? They ought to know that they're defenders and peacekeepers, and not judges, legislators, or administrators over civilians. I'd think the military is more interested merely in reestablishing stronger and less tense stability for the proper Thai political process to run.

You're not getting many coups and martial law situations where army personnel are posiong for photographs with foreign tourists.

Spend a lot of time in Thai, this is the first Travor I have seen, I was shocked to see it too but dont think they have very many of them. The ones they have were more than likely bought with US military aid so we paid for them. The usual army gun I see there are vintage Colts, very worn probably Vietnam War/first Gulf War era.

  • @AuldeyST
    @AuldeyST 10 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Im a Thai citizen, and I can say that the vid was a little exaggerated, It's much more calmer than that, people start taking selfies with troops guarding around the city with their humvees and trucks.
    As the anti-army/martial law protesters, those people are just provoking violence from the army, They stated that they did not wanted a coup, and yet a few of them act aggressive towards the the troops, leaving the army no choice but to apprehend them. The army even stated out that protesting with more than 5 people is currently prohibited, they are just looking trouble in my opinion.
    I understand that from what is currently happening, it looks as if it's leading to dictatorship, but then again, what VICE didn't mention in the vid other than capturing all the protesters and the politicians was that, General Prayuth declared to pay all the farmers for the rice pledging programme that Yingluck's Government failed to do. Simultaneously searching for a new prime minister/leader that will temporarily run the country until everything is resolved.
    But then again, Time will tell whether General Prayuth is actually restoring peace or turn my country a totalitarian state. As of right now, Im trusting him to clean up this mess that the politicians, and protesters created.

    • @tiagocarioca
      @tiagocarioca 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are really stupid! The protests need to be agressive to the troops because military should not be involved on politics. Military should obey the civilians, not the opposite.
      Prayuth already killed a lot of people back then in 2010 and he continues killing people and stealing money. You idiots who support coups are the responsible for Thailand being this backward country.

    I have seen this struggle all over the internet. The Military declares martial law. What troubles me is most people who live in a supposedly free country like America, say this could never happen to us. Well think again, Homeland Security, Transportation Security Agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement are all internal Quasi-Para-Military units. That have grown to a point that there power might overwhelm our own elected government. I hope that does not happen. Americans are peaceful people unless the powers that be decide to disregard our Constitution and Bill of Rights. That will be a game changer and those who think they can pull that off. Well they will have to deal with a well-armed Militia. I can only hope that our military will decide to follow their oath to their country and the constitution. (foot note) our police force better remember their oath too.

And the bad thing is there are some people support the military to launch a coup until now they are still support.

Without trying to downplay your obvious sarcasic excellence, I feel I need to burst your little bubble here. The BRD is pretty goddamn peacefull and democratic and It's only getting better. ha, what makes you think im unsatisfied with my life buddy?. talking about living in a bubble, your comment seems to imply you live in one.and since we are guessing the physiological and social behavior of each other, i presume you are one of those people who lacks greatly in social interaction and a self proclaimed keyboard warrior that tries to pick fights on the internet,one who is oblivious to sarcasm due to your inadequate social interaction skills. and if you had included in your first comment the country you speak of, it would have saved us this piss fest. and germany isnt all rainbows and unicorns with corrupt political parties and businesses.

    To all misunderstand foreigners .
    I live in Thailand and Thailand needed the military to command martial law . They have already been lots of killing from protest and lots of corruption . So if the military don't take over , the killing will be more and more . But when the military command the martial law , things started to get better and continuing to get better . Example : they are no protest , the farmer that join the gov's rice fund ( if I have bad English and didn't deliver the message good , I am sorry ) have got the money( that the government have promise them they will give but they didn't ) from the army , etc .
    Please don't go crazy and thinks that martial law is bad .
