Anyone who's been through the countless other coups (and attempts) in Turkish history can tell you with immense confidence that this was not a coup attempt. It was a dozen or two high ranking military officials that where bribed millions of Turkish Lira to order their subordinates to go to a few key locations in Turkey. Such as: Taksim Square, The National Archives, Istanbul International Airport etc. All the soldiers you see in these videos are conscripts who where woken up at around 23:00 and ordered to take equipment as they where going on a training mission. They had no idea they where about to be part of a "coup". High ranking commanders gave the orders to sergeants/warrant officers and then got in their private vehicles and fled the country with millions in their bank accounts. As I was watching this unfold I knew something was off. Coups in Turkey have always historically happened at 03-04:00 and you would wake up in the morning with the national news agency reading a decree by the Commander of the Armed Forces following a date where an election will be held (usually in around 1 years time). This has always been the way Turkey has conducted its coups.
Now, as a foreigner you might think, "Why on earth would anyone stage a coup?". Turkey has always been an extremely militaristic nation. All men get conscripted and there's a very big emphasis in youth education in history on Ottoman soldiers and the empire as a whole. But different from most countries the Turkish people have/had a saying; "Polis devletin, asker milletindir." Which translates too: "The police are the governments', the army is the peoples." During the 2013 Gezi Park protests which showed immense amount of police brutality hundreds and thousands of people fled the advancing water cannons and riot police officers straight into military barracks around Istanbul. The soldiers would simply tell the police that their duty is to protect the citizens of this country. They would inform the police that that is their ONLY duty and they are not responsible if some of these people are "criminals", as the army they felt responsibility to protect every single citizen from any sort of harm. This is all happening while Erdogan and his fascist cabinet are spreading their tentacles into every corner of the country. The one place that they had failed to put their people in charge of was the army. The army was always the one thing standing between Erdogan and complete power over the country, essentially a 21st century dictatorship. So this brilliant idea was hatched; around 600 troops took part in the entire coup, many of them conscripts aged 17-19, the coup brought the people together and it seemed like Erdogan was the saviour. What did he do once the coup was supressed? Fired %10 of all civil servants (judges, lawyers, teachers, notary's etc.), closed THOUSANDS of educational institutions, imprisoned TENS OF THOUSANDS of people who where said to be traitors. And the best part of it all, he got rid of the minister of defence, appointed his own man as the new Commander of the Armed Forces and then officially attached the Turkish Armed Forces to the Presidency, making himself the Commander-in-Chief. And this is pretty much a general overview of the entire thing. I'll gladly explain more if anyone wants to know about it. I was there when it happened, I knew people who where stationed in other military bases around the country while it happened. Ever since the military got out of Erdogan's way he got more, and more and more power and look what he's done now... Ran the country into the ground. We're a disgrace of a nation, we've had the worst economical year in our history, we've got more journalists imprisoned then any other western nation, human rights are a joke.
I used to be proud to be Turkish, but now I look at what we've become and I cannot even fathom it.

You wrote a lot of stuff that I agree with, but the possibility of a staged coup occuring without anyone knowing is pretty far fetched when you think about it. I mean, the Gulenist organization acting as a deep state parallel organization was a widely known fact, as they provided the intellectual and financial muscle to AKP for most of its existence. Now there's a change that Erdogan knew maybe, but I highly doubt that this was a planned coup. If anything it was US orchestrated lol

@@josephkwon3904 Read about auto coups and self coups to learn more. Look at the current situation in Tunisian rn. Coup feels like the word of 2021 imo but there are many different types and even all the ones this year were different types. A leader trying to make a national emergency in an effort to consolidate power is an old strategy but it unfolds in different ways depending on the country. In the US in January we had a president use "brown shirts" or citizen soldiers for his coup. But he was also still in control of the military and comprised our Pentagon and kept them from allowing clearance for our National Guard to deploy onto the Capitol during the attempted coup. The fighting/storming was just one of the parts because there were legal coups drafted up as well. No country is impossible to overthrow or overtake in an authoritarian way. All you need is enough ppl in power to say "yes".

    Backstory of the coup:
The Fetullah Gülen organisation is a religious extremist sect from Turkey. The sect exists since 1964. Over the years, they grew stronger and stronger. İn 1999, Gülen was to be arrested because of charges of infiltrating the state and trying to overthrow the Republic and replace it by sharia law, like in İran. He fled from Turkey and never returned back.
İn 2003-2013 Erdoğan and Gülen were actually cooperating with each. İn two separate courtcases thousands of Generals, Admirals, high ranking Police and many more were put into jail with fake charges.
Then, in late 2013 Gülen tried to overthrow Erdoğan by causing civil unrest. İt didnt work out. Now, Gülen and Erdoğan were split. Erdoğan brought out the innocent people from prison, although back then he had helped Gülen to put them into prison.
Anyway, now Gülens people were being cleaned out from the state. They had actually captured around a third of all the state we could say. They recruited their own men into positions in ministries, Police, Military and so on. Now since they were being cleaned out, the only way they saw was to do a coup.
That coup was done on the 15.07.2016. It failed due to a few big reasons: 1. They didnt manage to cut off internet in Turkey. 2. The commander who should have taken over the highest command position, was killed. 3. Only a small part of the Military was actually doing a coup.
    The coup ultimately failed.
Gülen is a terrorist. He and his organisation tried to end the Republic twice. Their ultimate target is to make Turkey an İslamic Republic, so a dictatoship like İran is nowadays. Erdoğan today is an autocrat, but at least when hes gone we can return to normal. With Gülen, there wouldnt be a way back to democrcy for dozens of years

The only thing you should maybe add is the leaked tapes from gulen where he tells his followers to take over every possible institution with the ultimate goal tot Ake over the state. Ironically even tells them to not stroke before the eggs are cooked lol (before it's the right time). But Erdogan kicking his followers out of powerful positions forced their hand...
As someone that dislikes Erdogan. Purging the Gulenists is probably the best thing to happen ti Turkey in the past 20 / 30 years. And I'm terrified the opposition might be too lax on the issue if they ever gain power. @Love_N_Let_Live 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@2011blueman Not so much as "non violent", but more so calculated violence and political moves. If you really want to overtake your government with your military, and actually give freedom to the people and not oppress them, then you must have an overwhelming percentage of the military and government on board before doing so. If not, then the "new" government will just be shattered and have too many problems all at once to reasonably maintain.
Sure, Turkey isn't perfect, but they have a system in place that relies on many things working together with people that have experience running things. If the new government can't get anyone to listen to it, what will most likely happen? Chaos. Most positions will be filled by inexperienced people that rely on violence to get their way. Then a fight for power over the "new government" will take place because usually there will be people power hungry enough to want to become the next dictator.
Look at any country in the last 100 years that have overthrown their government with the military and tell me how they're doing.

In the first hours Turkish secret service did call an army officer in an building… in control of Fetullah Gulen soldiers… they did ask him to kill the leader of the army coup… it was an general…. They said if you kill him you know you will not survive…he said he did accept this order willingly and he did kill the coup leader in the first hours… this was the coup was in panic 😱… uprising people fighting police and special forces did beat the army …

Turkish army already knew how to do coup before 15 July 2016, before it there was 9 coups happened in Turkey in just 50 years all of them were successful for military. I am not saying coup is a true way to bring a justice into a country. But with over 800.000 soldiers in the army and experienced army staff which know how to fight and do coup because of the insurgent fighting against insurgencies inside of the turkey since 1980s and coup history with 100% success rate. In 15 July coup there was roughly over 1000 solders with less than 10 jets and small amount of armoured vehicles and tanks. People who are curios check the 1980s and rest of the coups happened in Turkey and size of it. You might be curios why am I writing these facts here, after the Erdogan purged the Turkish army over 80% of its officers has fired or made retired with force. This same events happened for teachers, police force, government workers, lawyers, jurists every aspect of working force for government purged. After the coup OHAL started which is State of Emergency all powers are directly went under Erdogan. Since then Turkish Parliament(TBMM) lost its functions. Before the coup Erdogan was failing at the election pools for incoming General Election after the coup with powers he had he delayed election a year and increase his popularity back. Economy collapsed in Turkey. Every open minded citizen of Turkey knows there was only one winner after the coup, and he is the Erdogan. Timing of Vice News releasing of this video just made me curios. Why is it too late, why didn't you memorize brave citizen of turkey which had lost their life in better time? Why did you choose a time when currently Erdogan is way behind of his opponents in pools for next election?

Thanks for all the details except 1. This coup was supposed to happen at 3:00 AM while everyone is was deep asleep. The country was supposed to wake up to a coup and a curfew, no transportation, no services, helpless with every institution and strategic location already under control of military junta before dawn like the ones you mentioned which had happened before. What made this one different and a failure? Erdogan’s intelligence got a whiff of it on the day from the unusual phone traffic and movements in the military circles as they were getting ready logistically for the 3:00 AM execution of the plan. When the military found out Erdogan’s security detail got a whiff , it was decided to deprive Erdogan time to counter so it was executed in haste 6 hours ahead of schedule from the initial 3:00 AM plan, depriving the junta logistical advantage of putting tanks and soldiers in place beforehand to control crowds and enforce a curfew.

In Turkey the military is entitled with the duty to keep the country a secular democracy and whenever the country tries to become a divisive Islamic state, the Turkish military comes in to declare a coup. This is not the first time the Turkish military has done a military coup in order to restore the secular Constitution with which the country was founded. Only this time because of social media and Eardogan’s right wing Nationalist supporters the coup failed.
