Thailand may be on track for a return to democracy with general elections expected to be held in the first half of 2019. It would be the first polls for the Southeast Asian nation since a 2014 military coup. Former army general and current Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha recently lifted the junta’s ban on political activities, allowing the nation’s political players a chance to return to action. Here’s a look at the people, parties and institutions behind the fractious politics that have been a way of life in Thailand for decades.

Democracy can only work if all divisions of the society are committed to uphold the democratic system regardless of its consequences, including its potential impacts on the country's most fundamental system. It'd be better if the democracy is also based on respect among the societies.

They really need to put a chain on that military after the military’s role is defending the country not to lead it

This is consequence of Thailand's weak constitutional monarchy. It's time to adopt Malaysian system so coup will be more unlikely to happen. Plus, it is suggested that army be under the King decree.

Care to explain what other makes the Malaysian constitutional monarchy better? I am also a Malaysian and very curious to know.

    • @fithri99

Milton Miles separation of powers is important. Palace role is critical to balance. Rather than letting military to be its own single entity independently, put them under the palace. Administrative of government shall be separated into executive, judiciary and legislative. Constitution should state that head of state’s decision should be by the advice of the head of government. This way, military junta is unlikely to happen.
In Malaysia, only King has the utmost power to declare emergency and King changes every 5 years. This helps to ensure nobody gets too powerful. But I don’t deny a head of government can be seen as more powerful sometimes but not by law. Btw, putting constitution above the monarchy is probably the most critical.

Thaksin was the Jokowi version of Thailand. His policies really are benefiting the working class and the rural people and even minorities that doesn't received any central government attention since the begining, that is why he was very popular with the Thais. But his popularity was perceived as a bad thing according to his opponents. The rest is history

Thaksin is corrupt. He using his power to benefitting his companies with business agreements. Thais poor remains poor while Thaksin in power. But at least Thaksin didnt take a huge debt for Thailand like Jokowi did. And Thaksin never sent to jail his opponents like Jokowi did.

Interesting to know that the coloured groups are the same as in Malaysia in terms of colour. Red shirt here is nationalist Islamism, ultranationalist, conservative, right-wing, royalist whilst yellow is liberal, progressive, left-wing, and social democrats. Yellow represents the letter Bersih (the yellow group) sent to Palace in regards to corrupt government in charge. Yellow is a royal colour in Malaysia. Meanwhile Red represents the colour of ethnic Malay in response to Bersih riot.

You left out too much details. Thaksin was an intelligent leader, I give him that but he was corrupted. He was not only accused of power abusing and corruptions but the court already decided with tons of evidence that he was really wrong and should be put into jails. That was the reason why he cannot go back to Thailand because he is a criminal who cheated people’s money. Do you know why he is one of the wealthiest person on the planet and wear 100 million baht watches? Because he abused the power as a PM to do many illegal things to benefit his telecommunication company. And that is not only his businesses, his family also owns many luxury hotels, restaurants, many lands and clothing companies and so much more.
