There are three traditional pillars of Thailand that Thai people have long upheld:
    1. Nation
    2. Religion
    3. Monarchy
In the past, anyone allegedly attacking on any of these pillars was deemed un-Thai and tyrannical.
Now, with the arrival of social media, people get to see information from all sides of politics and that includes the information on the three pillars.
As a result, there have been spectacular changes in Thai people's mindset towards the three pillars since the past decade i.e. more and more people have become less nationalistic, less religious and less supportive of the monarchy, especially young people. The incident of Thaksin Shinawatra was indeed, in my opinion, the greatest turning point of modern Thai politics, but now it goes far beyond Thaksin into something much more ideological such as democracy, basic rights and international community. All of these don't bode well with people of older generations and those who benefit from the regressive Thai patronage system which is rampant in many sectors, so they use the same old trick of criminalizing anyone opposing them with charges/allegations on grounds of destroying the nation, religion or monarchy which, of course, don't go smoothly like in the past and even resulted in Thai society being polarized politically like never before. So, it's interesting to see how the situation will unfold, especially now with a newcomer party at play, Future Forward Party, who outrightly challenges the military and traditional establishment, and has continuously gained more and more popular support.
Also, I don't think "coup culture" is the only one that has sustained a series of coups in Thailand. There has always been international geopolitics involved; namely, the US and China, in lobbying for economic interests and political influence in Southeast Asia. The US/CIA even partook in pushing, amongst others, Thailand's three pillars with the Thai authoritarians to the far-right so that Thai people would deter communism and didn't become a communist or a colonial country like the rest of Southeast Asia, yet Thailand has become inflicted with their own authoritarian regimes instead until today.

I have been to Thailand and learned a few things:
1 ) The yellow party is the party of the city dwellers and they neglect services to the rural areas.
2 ) A politician came along who built a power base in the rural areas under a (revolutionary) red banner that managed to win a national election. Money began to be diverted to providing benefits to rural voters. I don't know if it was an unfair division of tax money. Street fighting broke out and the military had a coup where they took over.
3 ) I understand the military is typically even handed in it governance and so the population view of the military is mostly warm. The only issue with military rule is that they use the opportunity to improve wages and benefits for themselves. Perhaps that is not surprising.
4 ). Thailand is somewhat bipolar about retirees from abroad. These immigrants are a source of wealth to the people of Thailand. But the benefits are not widely spread. Plenty of native people in Thailand get no benefit from all these forign people and they lobby to make it harder for American retirees to stay long term. They force laws that make forigners have to occasionally leave the country for a time. That disrupts the retirements of forigners and reduces their numbers.
5 ) Still, Thailand is considered the retirement center of Asia. They have a modern economy with a large number of English speakers. English is
The common language that international travelers use to communicate. I was able to communicate with both Germans and French people, using English.
6 ) If you speak to a Thai person and say you are from the US or the United States, they will likely not understand. But if you say America they will understand always.
7 ) Cheap Sex Reputation:. Largely overblown today. It was true during the Vietnam war when soldiers came to Thailand for R&R. But Thailand is much more developed now.

Rayong, Trant, many islands, Hua Hin, Krabi , all of them are nearby the seaside within half an hour to 2 hours are all in short drive distance from always hot and humid Bangkok. After the vote, most Thai are sure that the votes must be rigged, but the government just say that it is not, just like that,no evidence. The public demands for raw votes? They refused. Hell, during a congress meeting, the PM side asked for a new election in Chiang Mai(one of the northern provinces of Thailand). Which they did,so it's obvious that all the parties votes would be reduced, right?
WRONG! The parties that are sided with the PM(Prayut) all got increased votes. And the parties that stayed loyal to the people votes got reduced

Being a blend of the two gets u a coup culture. If not already apparent, thailand has a military and monarchy (dictatorship entities) with great influence and a democratically elected prime minister (democratic entity).

Replied it in other comment, gonna paste it here:
Because, in Thailand, some (a lot of upper class) people still don't
believe in the idea of 1 person 1 vote.
So when the majority (poor) voted for their representatives to the job,
the middle class and up hated the ideas that poor peasants around the
countryside could be as vocal as they are so they come out in capital
city, storming the parliament (as mentioned in the video) and the main
airport, demanding the military to take over.
And of course as power hungry as people with guns and tanks would be,
they sieze power whenever there are opportunities, highly likely they
were in it from the start.
There aren't really ways to prevent, stop or punish the current or past
coupmakers as of right now in the country, which is sad.
Hopefully in the future we can have some amendment or future
constitution that have methods of prevening any more coups dragging and
freezing the country in the past.

business want security. the army is in power, so the country is pretty much safe. its pretty much the same in almost every third world country, the army always try to seize control. in my country, the army has been ruling since decades. my current president is not from military background and he faced multiple attempts of coup from military generals. luckily he is smart and recruit lots of military generals into his side and those generals prevented all those attempted coups.
the thing with military people is they dont want outsiders to intervere with their action. so only other military leaders can stop these coups. a president without the backing of senior military leaders is pretty much doomed.

    • @oukidono9290
      @oukidono9290 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh,I forgot to mention that he raised the military funding by alot, and I mean ALOT. There's also so many more seats being created for each ministry and those seats are held by the former commanders/generals

    • @oukidono9290
      @oukidono9290 4 ปีที่แล้ว

That wouldn't work. Because King Rama 10, favors the military. Whilst the previous king favors the people, he's the best king to rule over Thailand. But he passed away 2 years ago.

If you know Thailand's capital name. You will figure out who runs the country. The Sukhothai was not the first’s Siam capital. Politicians and Merchant guilds are at another level in Thai society. Political development is paralleled by Thailand’s cultural development, especially in relation to religious and royal architecture.
Thailand’s historical progression has been complex. The westerner never understands and won't be able to invade the land. ”Although the foundations of national identity are blinded. We will keep it mysterious.

I wonder why the palace is feeling safe and align themselves with the miliatry when it was the very same military who stormed the palace and rounded the prince and forced them out of absolute monarchy.
Bare in mind that in 1930s it wasn't a peasant lead revolution , it was military lead.
I read before somewhere which I cant remember that a British Professor once warned the king back then that Thailand wasn't ready for democracy because the people weren't ready and fully understand democracy. I guess he was right, seeing the amount of coups that happen after democratically held elections.
I'm not saying an absolute monarch is good but all I can say is at least back then they had leaders be it royals or not who cared about the people of thailand.

As a Thai, I hate coup and whoever attempted it. The 2 previous coups didn't solved problems and never will. But have only divided people further. Now it's not just political affiliations that divide us, but more of a political idea that Thai people still can't find middle ground. And it started at the top.
