It's been over a month since Thailand's army overthrew the country's elected government in a coup d'etat. In that short time, the new ruling junta has secured almost total control over the country and succeeded in silencing most of its critics.
Thailand has quickly come to resemble a police state, as hundreds of people have been detained, "invited to talk," or "given time to meditate," as the junta puts it. Most are released after a week - at which point they have signed a document indicating their promise not to oppose the coup, or face years in jail. Others have been sent to military courts for judgment, where no appeal is allowed.
Authorities have offered cash rewards for anyone who can bring them a photo of their fellow citizens taking part in anti-coup activities. Hand salutes, eating sandwiches, and reading controversial books in public are now illegal if they are considered to be motivated by anti-coup sentiments, and the media continues to be heavily censored.
The junta says 90 percent of Thais support the coup - which is a questionable number, having come from their own surveys. But there is no doubt that many citizens do support the coup, and feel that only the junta is able to eradicate corruption, stop crime, and keep the peace.
VICE News spent the past few weeks with two young Bangkokians who hold different perspectives on their country's shifting politics. One is a pro-coup supporter who believes the army's move was necessary to restore order. The other is a young student activist bent on having his voice heard, even under the threat of detention.

The protesters acknowledge that eating a sandwich is no large feat, but because the military has acted against it, they embrace it as a symbolic gesture of defiance.

Is it just me or are many of those who support the military junta really well off and rich, while those that don't are the poor? Look at the rich girl talking from on top her condominium building, of course she likes the way things are now, she and all her friends and families are really well off and probably making money from the way things are now. Its those with power, money and influence who don't want change.

      สุดท้ายขอเสริม writer.dek-d.com/freya1412/story/viewlongc.php?id=733167

In Thailand the elite middle class minority has always been close to the military and the monarchy. This prevented any true development from reaching the poor in the rural areas So when thaksin shinawatra came to power he challenged that elite his charisma even erked the monarchy because he was very popular and so 2007 the elite had the army removed urs later his sister becomes PM by democratic vote only to be removed by the military so this coup is basically about the rich minority in Thailand keeping the status quo and maintaining power.

You cannot solve a problem by creating more problems. Thailand has had issues with crime and corruption for years and yes something needed to be done. I don't think a coup de tat is a reasonable way to go about doing something. Inviting the army to take over is like inviting a wolf to dinner. Do you expect the wolf to return what he has eaten? He cannot and he will not.

This stuff is nothing new, in the Philippines during the 70's, people were happy a few months after the declaration of martial law, they said that streets were cleaner, people have more discipline and crime rates went down, however, couple of years later, the terrible things will occur.. disappearances, people being arrested just because they did not give respect to soldiers and other more terrible terrible atrocities. The reason for this is that the military will become more comfortable with their power as time passes, so comfortable that they will not be willing to part with it, and they will hang on in that power even if it means lesser freedom for the society.

Yingluck, while undeniably corrupt, was a far better alternative to the wealthy-aligned Yellows who wanted to reinstate full powers to the monarchy. It was the yellows, not the Yingluck-aligned Reds, who blocked people from voting during the referendum. The army is fortunately sympathetic to the plight of the poor (which is why they're referred to watermelons (green on the outside, red on the inside)) and stepped in to avoid a seemingly inevitable civil war that the yellows were instigating. Unfortunate as this highly undemocratic marshal law is, I feel it may truly be necessary in a country still teetering on the brink of all out civil war

    • @sern.21
      @sern.21 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Alexander Rose Thyren Again, do the math. If the majority of the population opposed their military and had the means to do so (firearms & munitions) then it isn't just possible but likely to go in the people's favor in the long run. Do you know what it takes to operate a tank, especially in populated areas? How easy it would be to ambush a tank in those close quarters. Plus the military has the means to their own defeat against such armor.
Of course it would be a blood bath for the duration of the fight. Is it not worth that so that you and your future generations can be free from tyranny and subjugation? Or would you rather live in a "peaceful" world where every now and then one of your family members goes missing because they're suspected with colluding with the 'enemy' or opposing the status quo.
It amazes me how some of you would rather live a "safe" life in shackles pledging yourselves to someone who took power for themselves instead of being given power by the people. Why? Because you're afraid you might get shot standing up for your own freedoms? Wow.
What's the point of life if you're not free to LIVE?

The Thai army is actually an army of volunteers. It is the people army. An intervention of the army to secure peace in the Thai society is normal. People got tired from corruption and incompetence of the "democratic" government. They need a break. Therefore, the majority of Thai people are taking the coup as a necessary step.
I reside in Thailand and I have neither a problem with military nor with police. However, I do not condemn youngsters for protesting. They need some involvement into civil activity and in time they will be better citizens.
So, what is happening in Thailand is absolutely normal for this country. It is also safe to come here and to have a good vacations. Thailand is a land of smiles no violence.

    Well, I'm from thailand.
At first, I apologize if I use wrong english expression.
My language is not very well. I wanna share my idea, though.
In this video, they are talking about liberty, democracy, rights.
I agree in that point of view. But who cares ???
Do democracy make our people have good quality of life ?
There are many evidences showing failure of government from "THIS DEMOCRACY"
The policies sounded good, motivating majority of our population to elect them.
But how many people consider the consequences of the policies?
Not all thais are well educated. "CASH" from politicians can do anything.
Can you deny it ? I think Thailand is not ready for this.
    Talking about rights and liberty.
I can live my own life normally so long as I do not act suspiciously.
How can the soldiers keep peace in our country if there are SOME (not ALL !!!) people who can't accept and resist violently.
We are not absolutely lessen. We can still speak our opinion out in many ways.
And there are no any bad results exposed to us now, also.
Many things were managed into the way it should be while ex-government CAN'T !!! Such as the rice pawning project that made the government losing lots of money, while the farmer did not get the money. Where is it,then.
So for me, I don't how fucking shit the system is.
Just make Thailand a better place.
Make our people live better life.
    That's it.
I still prefer good results than good process.
    Well, just my idea though.

If this guys hated our country is fine.
Not legally, but morally it is very wrong. You see, your country has provided you with so much. It has used its scarce resources on you. It has built hospitals to schools for you. You have access to the internet, which is kind of a luxury in this country. SO that means of course get food 3 times a day which this country has provided. It may not be the best place to be born in, but its also not the worst. Think how much resources this country has spent on you since you are born. You sleep safe and sound, have access to schooling and healthcare. Its not just because of your parents, but because of a community that we call Indians. So even though you don't love it, you should atleast respect it as it has provided you with those resources which it itself have in scarcity.

All trolling aside (I love to make crazy outlandish comments normally) this video captures an angle on the Thai coup that we simply don't see. The video clearly states that they are only representing 2 people's viewpoints, and towards this goal they seem successful.
Every country has problems, I'm from the UK and whilst some believe our land to be a bastion of human rights and civil liberties, we are currently having our whole country privatised. This is done without any publication and many people are unaware, thus having no opinion. For this reason I can only show support for journalists trying to shed some light on a highly opinionated situation like this.
It will be interesting to see how the situation in Thailand develops, and how this will be represented (or not represnted) in the various forms of media around the globe.

As You can see from the video how nice the soldiers treat people ? And look how about the protesters react to the soldiers ?
The soldiers only bring peace to the country and that that's the point of this coup ? Isnt it ? You can see how the majorities of the people except what was going on in their country and they are pretty happy about it. Do you wanna know why ?! cuz they know everything is getting better because of the soldiers ,less corruption , safer society and they are rebuilding the country , not destroying it :)
Ps. People still live everyday life like there's nothing happen. Just safer place
And sorry for my bad english.

What's the purpose of a constitution if it can simply be broken by a coup?

  • @hexadecimal5236
    @hexadecimal5236 10 ปีที่แล้ว

The foundation of this entire coup is the red shirt farmers simply want to be paid a free market rate for their crops. Instead the government regulations require them to sell to middle-men for almost nothing ensuring that they are kept poor. The middle-men (mostly at the port in Bangkok) then sell the rice to whomever they want. The SAME situation exists in the US where it is ILLEGAL for farmers to sell directly to the retail stores, they are required by law to sell to middle men who then sell to the stores, ensuring that farmers across the globe are kept poor. This is much bigger than just Thailand.

I know it hard to believe that the situation in Thailand is not dangerous now. If you really want to know, you have to go there and talk with people. Don't believe what you see on the internet.

    Everyone please understand this:
As a thai person, I don't agree with all this military propoganda, but at the moment this is far better than how the country was under rule of thaksin or thaksin (his sister, lol).
tbh, it's literally a decision on which of the two sides would benefit most from the country, and the obvious decision is the current one.
edit: btw, that shit at the end happens all the time, this current gov't or the last, so... imo, that part was purely for propaganda purposes
