It's been over a month since Thailand's army overthrew the country's elected government in a coup d'etat. In that short time, the new ruling junta has secured almost total control over the country and succeeded in silencing most of its critics.
Thailand has quickly come to resemble a police state, as hundreds of people have been detained, "invited to talk," or "given time to meditate," as the junta puts it. Most are released after a week - at which point they have signed a document indicating their promise not to oppose the coup, or face years in jail. Others have been sent to military courts for judgment, where no appeal is allowed.
Authorities have offered cash rewards for anyone who can bring them a photo of their fellow citizens taking part in anti-coup activities. Hand salutes, eating sandwiches, and reading controversial books in public are now illegal if they are considered to be motivated by anti-coup sentiments, and the media continues to be heavily censored.
The junta says 90 percent of Thais support the coup - which is a questionable number, having come from their own surveys. But there is no doubt that many citizens do support the coup, and feel that only the junta is able to eradicate corruption, stop crime, and keep the peace.
VICE News spent the past few weeks with two young Bangkokians who hold different perspectives on their country's shifting politics. One is a pro-coup supporter who believes the army's move was necessary to restore order. The other is a young student activist bent on having his voice heard, even under the threat of detention.

seriously eating sandwiches in public is considered anti-coup? What the hell, what next?
Truth118
It's probably not very common to see someone eating a taco in Thailand...
Next thing you know breathing in public will be pro anti-coup and then everyone will be in on it
The protesters acknowledge that eating a sandwich is no large feat, but because the military has acted against it, they embrace it as a symbolic gesture of defiance.
That dude was just making up his shitty story and that was the most shittiest story i've ever heard.
its conspiracy to incite sandwich eating
Austrians were happy when Hitler took over Austria because he promised healthcare for all, jobs for all during a floundering Austrian economy, but as you know things didn't turn out that way.
in fact they where but the axis lost the war
I am aware
Is it just me or are many of those who support the military junta really well off and rich, while those that don't are the poor? Look at the rich girl talking from on top her condominium building, of course she likes the way things are now, she and all her friends and families are really well off and probably making money from the way things are now. Its those with power, money and influence who don't want change.
yep
No stupid. Not just rich people are with the coup. There are rich people that were helping with the political riots..... You see one person and think that is how most are... How is that not stupid??? you explain that to me k?
;)
kaizer soze
You realize that calling people "stupid" automatically makes them not want to respond to you right? Make a less aggressive comment next time please.
สุดท้ายขอเสริม writer.dek-d.com/freya1412/story/viewlongc.php?id=733167
Excellent journalism, extremely sad situation for all of the people in general (whether they are for or against the coup).
For me the sadest part of all this was seeing the people at the mall one guy is getting jumped by like 5 officers and everyone just watches
inb4 RT viewers try to educate us on what a junta is
Is it just me, or do these soldiers seem very calm and reasonable?
Why wouldn't they be? They have total power and shit-tons of backup.
What's more, they know they're being watched - by both the populace, and the inter/national press.
You can rest assured they are far less calm and reasonable when they're shoving you into a dirty cell to await interrogation.
nilesrock024 I mean compared soldiers or law enforcement around the world during similar situations.
John M what an ignorant racist statement
Andrew...Because they have to!! They can't do violence like 50 years ago.
John M Make that 7
Sandwich eating protest? Best protest, hands down.
it seems to me the pro-coup one is much wealthier than the protestor
let military take over it best for country, take north korea example. We best people in world.
Happy People #1 All The Time :D
north korea is best korea
Korea of North best happy place for no USA people!
long live our dear leader, he feeds me one rice pellet for all my family !
Thailand wouldn't be the same level as the N-Korea. Communism is one of the most hated thing in Thailand. In the past you could get the death penalty if you try to split the communism or having a communist party in Thailand.
this is so good, please more! i can't wait
"There is no sign they will seize total control." Uhm, sweetheart.. they already did? xD
In Thailand the elite middle class minority has always been close to the military and the monarchy. This prevented any true development from reaching the poor in the rural areas So when thaksin shinawatra came to power he challenged that elite his charisma even erked the monarchy because he was very popular and so 2007 the elite had the army removed urs later his sister becomes PM by democratic vote only to be removed by the military so this coup is basically about the rich minority in Thailand keeping the status quo and maintaining power.
I hope you are better educated now than you were three years ago.
You cannot solve a problem by creating more problems. Thailand has had issues with crime and corruption for years and yes something needed to be done. I don't think a coup de tat is a reasonable way to go about doing something. Inviting the army to take over is like inviting a wolf to dinner. Do you expect the wolf to return what he has eaten? He cannot and he will not.
This stuff is nothing new, in the Philippines during the 70's, people were happy a few months after the declaration of martial law, they said that streets were cleaner, people have more discipline and crime rates went down, however, couple of years later, the terrible things will occur.. disappearances, people being arrested just because they did not give respect to soldiers and other more terrible terrible atrocities. The reason for this is that the military will become more comfortable with their power as time passes, so comfortable that they will not be willing to part with it, and they will hang on in that power even if it means lesser freedom for the society.
I wonder what sort of cameras they used to film the mall incident.
"Don't mind me, just a regular student walking all around the mall followed by a group of cameramen, as you do."

may the odds be ever in your favor
Any more news?
Yingluck, while undeniably corrupt, was a far better alternative to the wealthy-aligned Yellows who wanted to reinstate full powers to the monarchy. It was the yellows, not the Yingluck-aligned Reds, who blocked people from voting during the referendum. The army is fortunately sympathetic to the plight of the poor (which is why they're referred to watermelons (green on the outside, red on the inside)) and stepped in to avoid a seemingly inevitable civil war that the yellows were instigating. Unfortunate as this highly undemocratic marshal law is, I feel it may truly be necessary in a country still teetering on the brink of all out civil war
Yingluk's somewhat of a looker, I've noticed. Put a MILF in power, see if that distracts the populace. I wonder if the ethnic Chinese are going to bear the brunt of the rioting at some point.
I can't find the dispatch six
I love the hunger game sign idea.
So sad
VICE News can you guys reverse the order of the videos in your playlists? I was to start at dispatch 1 and have it continuously play until 5 not the fucking other way around, who wants to watch events in reverse order?
It's sad... I want to share this but I just can't do it.

From 2021, are you happy now?
No talking

Eating sandwiches and doing the Hunger Games sign is illegal now? Shit the military is paranoid as fuck!!!
Dude... I was eating subway... and man... Do I get these weird fucking look from all the fork...
Thiland needs to borrow the second ammendment.
Population 2013 68,229,000
Military. "Today the Royal Thai Armed Forces comprises about 305,860 personnel."
Do the math.
ya because citizens with guns fighting their armed forces Would totaly turn out so welll For fuck sake man what is it with some of you people from the U.S thinking it would be better to fill the streets with blood instead of solving this peacefully?
Alexander Rose Thyren I would be another one to pick up arms in Thailand and fight the government.
What about the people who support the military they will have guns too! Thailand will turn into a blood bath if everyone had guns!
***** I think you are being sacracastic, but I always here that and then think of someone saying something like this; 'Well most of my family is dead, and my house was burned down from stray bullets and missiles but hey, at least there are no more bad guys with guns"
Alexander Rose Thyren Again, do the math. If the majority of the population opposed their military and had the means to do so (firearms & munitions) then it isn't just possible but likely to go in the people's favor in the long run. Do you know what it takes to operate a tank, especially in populated areas? How easy it would be to ambush a tank in those close quarters. Plus the military has the means to their own defeat against such armor.
Of course it would be a blood bath for the duration of the fight. Is it not worth that so that you and your future generations can be free from tyranny and subjugation? Or would you rather live in a "peaceful" world where every now and then one of your family members goes missing because they're suspected with colluding with the 'enemy' or opposing the status quo.
It amazes me how some of you would rather live a "safe" life in shackles pledging yourselves to someone who took power for themselves instead of being given power by the people. Why? Because you're afraid you might get shot standing up for your own freedoms? Wow.
What's the point of life if you're not free to LIVE?
That is no excuse to treat people like that. Just because someone has a diffrent point of view .
I'm surprised though that eating sandwiches is protesting. DOWN WITH SUBWAY! DOWN WITH SUBWAY!
This won't end well.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
-Benjamin Franklin
The Thai army is actually an army of volunteers. It is the people army. An intervention of the army to secure peace in the Thai society is normal. People got tired from corruption and incompetence of the "democratic" government. They need a break. Therefore, the majority of Thai people are taking the coup as a necessary step.
I reside in Thailand and I have neither a problem with military nor with police. However, I do not condemn youngsters for protesting. They need some involvement into civil activity and in time they will be better citizens.
So, what is happening in Thailand is absolutely normal for this country. It is also safe to come here and to have a good vacations. Thailand is a land of smiles no violence.
Poor New!
Resist the Coup dude! Resist the Coup!
Thailand has become the Southeast Asian counterpart of Egypt.
im thai and i have relatives that live there
That 3 finger thing is really stupid.
Well, I'm from thailand.
At first, I apologize if I use wrong english expression.
My language is not very well. I wanna share my idea, though.
In this video, they are talking about liberty, democracy, rights.
I agree in that point of view. But who cares ???
Do democracy make our people have good quality of life ?
There are many evidences showing failure of government from "THIS DEMOCRACY"
The policies sounded good, motivating majority of our population to elect them.
But how many people consider the consequences of the policies?
Not all thais are well educated. "CASH" from politicians can do anything.
Can you deny it ? I think Thailand is not ready for this.
Talking about rights and liberty.
I can live my own life normally so long as I do not act suspiciously.
How can the soldiers keep peace in our country if there are SOME (not ALL !!!) people who can't accept and resist violently.
We are not absolutely lessen. We can still speak our opinion out in many ways.
And there are no any bad results exposed to us now, also.
Many things were managed into the way it should be while ex-government CAN'T !!! Such as the rice pawning project that made the government losing lots of money, while the farmer did not get the money. Where is it,then.
So for me, I don't how fucking shit the system is.
Just make Thailand a better place.
Make our people live better life.
That's it.
I still prefer good results than good process.
Well, just my idea though.
So the Secret Police just apprehanded anti Military activist in the crowded mall and the people's just like "well, welcome to Thailand".
Damn.
I hate that girl. Another example of someone that's willing to sacrifice freedom for supposed peace.
Scratch that one off my to visit list. Military ruled governments, not my preference.
Why can't the Thai people just get along with each other? I'm from Thailand and I gotta say, shit has gone loose in Thailand in these past 20 years ever since Taksin came to power/ kicked from office.
It's like that in every country with elections it's just some countries can't really handle it, but honestly it's the only thing we got right now.
Not only 20 years , but It's been happen since 40 years ago or maybe more , If you know the History of the government in this country.
Apicha P. Yes, I know that the Thai politics had been a mess ever since WWII, but I meant to say that things had been increasingly severe and aggressive in the recent years because of the Yellow/Red clashes.
no 6 ??
I can not say if I say or I will be arrested immediately against my freedom restored to help me.
Thailand can thank its monarch for the police state.
I never feel peaceful until military coup.
terminal 21 is a sick place
And people really think that we have any hope for future :)
If this guys hated our country is fine.
Not legally, but morally it is very wrong. You see, your country has provided you with so much. It has used its scarce resources on you. It has built hospitals to schools for you. You have access to the internet, which is kind of a luxury in this country. SO that means of course get food 3 times a day which this country has provided. It may not be the best place to be born in, but its also not the worst. Think how much resources this country has spent on you since you are born. You sleep safe and sound, have access to schooling and healthcare. Its not just because of your parents, but because of a community that we call Indians. So even though you don't love it, you should atleast respect it as it has provided you with those resources which it itself have in scarcity.
Those security guards weigh like 100 lbs
2:48 you think it’s peaceful? Looks like she never been to the frontlines.
Looks peaceful
...did he say "coup d'etay"?
I don’t think that women was the best representation of pro-coup Thai people.
A idealist young man who worship democracy with sense of real world.
If I could I'd just move out of that fukin state... And I love how they're using the Hunger Games symbol (Also the Boy Scout sign) as a way of resistance xD
we as american people should really learn from this.
3:33 How wrong was she 😂
With out stability ..... Democracy or not is not a matter.
Why can't Thai people just love each other
Just to add on, reporting on one side of the story is bad but the fact that vice even made an effort to get views from people on different sides of the coup is already something that many mainstream news agencies do not do
damn.. they've got a curfew from 10pm till 5am. Even tourists arnt allowed outside without permission...
Thank gdness I revisited the country before all this chaos took place
All trolling aside (I love to make crazy outlandish comments normally) this video captures an angle on the Thai coup that we simply don't see. The video clearly states that they are only representing 2 people's viewpoints, and towards this goal they seem successful.
Every country has problems, I'm from the UK and whilst some believe our land to be a bastion of human rights and civil liberties, we are currently having our whole country privatised. This is done without any publication and many people are unaware, thus having no opinion. For this reason I can only show support for journalists trying to shed some light on a highly opinionated situation like this.
It will be interesting to see how the situation in Thailand develops, and how this will be represented (or not represnted) in the various forms of media around the globe.
To be honest it didn't sound like their previous government was good at running things anyway so I doubt this coup really matters.
It reminds me of the khmere rouge
hello im new.
LMFAO what a name.
Wow
This is what Democracy looks like
hes got a sandwich, open fire! boom boom boom lol but seriously dam the level of absurdity is fuking ridiculous
lol
help us,pls :'(
As You can see from the video how nice the soldiers treat people ? And look how about the protesters react to the soldiers ?
The soldiers only bring peace to the country and that that's the point of this coup ? Isnt it ? You can see how the majorities of the people except what was going on in their country and they are pretty happy about it. Do you wanna know why ?! cuz they know everything is getting better because of the soldiers ,less corruption , safer society and they are rebuilding the country , not destroying it :)
Ps. People still live everyday life like there's nothing happen. Just safer place
And sorry for my bad english.
It has been 4 years sinve the coup, and yeah life is actually better
Coup was a great choice for this country
What's the purpose of a constitution if it can simply be broken by a coup?
The foundation of this entire coup is the red shirt farmers simply want to be paid a free market rate for their crops. Instead the government regulations require them to sell to middle-men for almost nothing ensuring that they are kept poor. The middle-men (mostly at the port in Bangkok) then sell the rice to whomever they want. The SAME situation exists in the US where it is ILLEGAL for farmers to sell directly to the retail stores, they are required by law to sell to middle men who then sell to the stores, ensuring that farmers across the globe are kept poor. This is much bigger than just Thailand.
I know it hard to believe that the situation in Thailand is not dangerous now. If you really want to know, you have to go there and talk with people. Don't believe what you see on the internet.
Everyone please understand this:
As a thai person, I don't agree with all this military propoganda, but at the moment this is far better than how the country was under rule of thaksin or thaksin (his sister, lol).
tbh, it's literally a decision on which of the two sides would benefit most from the country, and the obvious decision is the current one.
edit: btw, that shit at the end happens all the time, this current gov't or the last, so... imo, that part was purely for propaganda purposes
History is repeating itself in the Philippines..
lol. the way the army hides from plastic bottles.
All of those who are not living in Thailand you don't have the rights to say shit about our country look at your own country first
I guess these coup d'état supporters arguing against peaceful protesting never heard of the slippery slope...Also, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." (Benjamin Franklin) and "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it" (George Santayana)
Interrupting the coup
Shits going down!
Hmm, why does in Thai the words "problem" & "soldier" have the "han"? So what happened to the red shirts and yellow shirts?
I'm Thai people and I want to something the coup have to building many problem and The Junta's Police try to close news . The Junta's Police make control reporter same them agree T^T
Support thai military
