  • Jeep's new Wrangler 4xe isn't the first Jeep with a plug, but it is the first PHEV Jeep is selling in the United States and the first one with off roading in mind. Jeep's mission with the Wrangler 4xe was to make a Jeep that's just as capable as any other Sahara or Rubicon that happens to have an EV mode. To do that they teamed up with ZF to create a new 8-speed automatic with a 181 horsepower electric motor, then they bolted a 17.3 kWh battery to the frame, tossed a 7.2 kW charger on board and called it a day. The combination is good for 375 horsepower, a whopping 470 lb-ft of torque, and a somewhat less than exciting 22 miles of range. How does it all come together? Let's find out together!

    This is pretty awesome, I'm a big fan of PHEVs, electricity only for 80% of your driving then gas for road trips or those extra long shopping days. Plus the extra torque at low rpms is really nice to have.

      The cheapest is around $50k, but there's also a substantial tax credit available.

      @@bryanmills2295 those tax credits are tricky. Need to have that net tax burden in the 1st place. Personally, I wouldn't buy *ANY* brand new car. That's how middle class people stay broke.

      ​@@donhill1825 They're not tricky, but definitely benefit the higher income earners who can afford the high price tag. They're based on what your federal tax liability is for the year, as filed individually or as a married couple. The tax credit is $7500. If you paid $7500 or more in federal taxes throughout the year, you'll get the full credit. If you paid less than that, then you'll only get up to what you paid. Paid $5k? Max credit is $5k. Some states also offer state tax credits on top of the federal credit.
      The tax credit is a terrible way to do it. The fairest way is adding an emissions tax to fuel purchases... but then Americans would bawl their eyes out for having to pay more for the environmental damage they do.

      @@updlate4756 That’s not well thought through. EV owners already don’t pay for fuel taxes that pay for the roads. You want that burden to be even higher? Why not just issue a tax refund for the amount?
      Anyway, the vast majority of Americans qualify for far more than $7500.

    Alex, first time viewer and now a subscriber. I am very curious about the PHEV options available in the market. Could you do a comparison of the SUV PHEV options in a video segment? Perhaps the X5 from BMW vs other similar sized, and the Jeep could be included as well (I know the vehicle is a different use case), but fundamentally these all offer zero gas driving for around town and short commutes, with gas motor for longer trips.

    This period of time for Jeep will be looked back on as such an oddity. All the complexities of trying to combine an engine and electric, with few of the advantages, like reduced maintenance. Wait for the all electric model, like a Rivian, with one motor at each wheel producing tons of instant torque and being the amazing rock crawler you’ll want.

      While I like Rivian and will probably buy one, this is likely to be better at rock crawling. This is because putting motor behind a transmission gives a lot of reduction and the benefit of traditional locking diffs.

      @@errhka Yeah and you likely can take a solar panel setup on a roof rack to charge it on a long overland trip. Will be way slow but even if you have to use a whole day of charge time to drive out 20miles to refuel that is better than most alternatives.

    Impressive ease of low speed moves on electricity. Hope there is a ‘save the battery for later’ drive mode. I’d want all 25 miles for the trail if I were doing technical moves near / on rock. Low range and the smooth power of the electric motor? Nice.

      Not great, but I understand the highway numbers. This thing has the aerodynamics of a Lego truck. As for city, that must be one thirsty little engine. Given what a lousy daily driver a Wrangler is for most of us, that ability to commute on battery power seems of questionable consequence. It's a nice drivetrain, but an awkward fit for a Jeep.

    The 2021 PHEV Wranglers have MSRP's from $53K to $63K. That's crazy unless you're really into off-roading. Lots of very nice PHEV vehicles for less, but again if going off-road is your weekend hobby then this might make sense. However there is a $7500 tax credit on the 4xe so that helps a bit.

      If you’re really into off-roading, you don’t take a brand new, $55k Jeep. You get a $5k old Jeep and sink $10k worth of modifications into it.

    Are there other phevs that run heat and/or A/C purely off the battery as long as the battery has charge? This seems ideal for car camping, and might help make phevs more popular.

    Wranglers only gets like 20-25 mpg combined (depending on engine option), so while the EV efficiency isn't great, it's replacing the inefficient ICE use. I imagine this thing would get MUCH better EV range if you swapped out those tires for smaller lower rolling resistance tires like most EVs. I also imagine the highway driving is what brings down the average with its terrible .45 drag coefficient. City driving should be way better. Now the real question... how hard/expensive would it be to swap in the PHEV components into an ICE Wrangler?

    Are the clutches in the trans wet or dry? Only 22 miles sounds pointless. @ 4:20 milage is worse then the ice version unless you live in the ideal conditions. I want one but there going to have to do better then that.

    That’s a good way to get it done, except for one thing. That ZF-8 transmission isn’t known for its reliability. Making it more complex is likely not the answer.

    Is it flat towable for RVs? I have not seen any documentation from Jeep on this and will it recharge the battery while being towed? Just being able.to.flat tow it will be the major concern. Being able to recharge while towing would be the icing on the cake.

      Yes it is flat towable, no it will not recharge from being towed. You could however run a cable to the charge port.

    Problem with phev’s is a large proportion of buyers, who may have started with good intentions, don’t plug them in very often, so it ends up being a worse hev with a big, heavy, expensive battery.

    It makes me wonder if that will overheat.

      Unlike in a DCT, these clutches won't be engaging and disengaging under power often.

      How so?
      This is not the same solution as Hybrid Synergy Drive from Toyota (the solution from Prius).
      Especially in the scenario where torque from the gasoline engine is used, the clothes will be used to smooth out the difference in the rotation speed.

      @@JamesDornbos Batteries weigh a lot. I doubt any PHEV will have lots more than 20 miles of effective range. No need for it. You’re lugging around a whole ICE engine and transmission when in EV mode and a whole battery when in ICE/hybrid mode. Not efficient.

    Back in the old days when things were simpler, you had natural aspirated 6 cylinder and a manual transmission. All very easy to maintain which allows the car to last for decades or forever if you properly maintain it. This is the practical way to be friendly to the environment because you're not throwing away a car and generating waste.
    Of course, that doesn't look nice from the business of making cars. So car makers makes the car with a lot of complexity with plenty of planned obsolescence. Then called it a hybrid which essentially means two power unit instead of one. Yep, twice the amount of complexity, more things to break so you will throw away the car more quickly.
    How is this gonna help the environment?

    I mean 22 miles of range the outlander phev can do, i dont see the benifit of the jeep. its not even a two door which is a real jeep. Honestly it doesnt have enough range to matter, I want an electric jeep, or a phev with a useable range.

    In hybrid mode, is every engine start basically a cold start under load with no immediate oil pressure ? Or is oil temp and pressure somehow maintained ?
    Thinking of engine life and reliability.....

      Oil temperature, not pressure, is maintained by engines very well. Maybe even too well. It starts waaay more often than it takes for it to cool off.

      Even in 2021, the most wear to engine components takes place at startup.
      Hydraulic lifters require pressure to actuate, and oils are formulated to perform best at specific temperature ranges.
      None of which matters if oil is below temperature and/ or sitting in the sump.

      @@DARisse-ji1yw That’s true, but hybrids don’t use starters, which pull only a fraction of the amperage needed to fully crank an engine, from the 12v battery. They draw the power from one of the electric motor/generators, which makes enough power to do a smooth full crank of the engine. That in turn reduces a large quantity of wear and tear of the starting process. Hybrids also don’t have alternators, charging the 12v from the generator as well. They do have functioning oil pumps to create the necessary pressure as well.
      My Rav4 hybrid starts the engine at startup, after a full boot-up, and runs the engine until it is warmed up. As the primary drive comes from the electric motor, no additional burden is placed on the engine as it continues until its optimal temperatures and shuts off, unless needed. Once it is needed or it starts to cool off, it restarts again. Keep in mind that it uses 0W-16 fully synthetic oil. On the one hand, it often cycles between hot and “hot enough” temperatures, which isn’t ideal, but on the other hand, they still stay within proper operating temps and high temperatures is what destroys the oil to begin with.
      Please keep in mind that car manufacturers employ actually experienced mechanical engineers and not TH-cam commenters and might have an idea if what they’re doing, considering that cars are more reliable than they’ve ever been in history, despite (or due to) their complexities.

      Yah, hate to say but agree. The plug in (PHEV) Jeep renegade is also built in southern italy. My experience with a broken down rental car in southern italy (Amalfi coast) in the mid-80s -- bring it to the only English-speaking mechanic in the area -- kicks the tire, ask what the problem? Waves hand, domani, domani (tomorrow). Didn't see the car again for a week. Things might have improved since then, but a mindset is a terribly difficult thing to break.

    22 miles of EV range = no thank you. Need about 50 miles to justify the $50K price tag and even then I’d rather get a Tesla Model Y or Cybertruck.

    Will this be a reliable hybrid system given the fact that it’s an fca (sorry stellantis) product? That’s the elephant in the room question with anything new from stellantis haha

      The majority of the hybrid system is made by ZF, so it’s probably going to be similar to all the European RWD hybrids of similar design

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide Seems like they used a very similar system to the Pacifica hybrid but I think you said it gets worse fuel economy which seems strange

      Actually it is very very different. The Pacifica system is essentially the same as a Toyota hybrid in that it has a single planetary gear set and two motors. The Pacifica lacks a traditional transmission.

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide I guess with Chrysler transmission reputation that’s a good thing. The only negative I’ve noticed is you have to be very careful when going up a hill slowly because it will roll back fast if you’re not careful, thank you for the response Alex I really appreciate and love your show

    Domestic car companies had enough reliability issues and couldn’t make cylinder deactivation work well with auto transmissions, now we’ve added complex hybrid technology to the pot, or should I say toilet.

      If you mean full evs toyota announced the concept recently that looks real
      But as far as electrification in general such as hybrids both Honda and Toyota are there

      One can logically argue that Toyota takes it more seriously than anyone. Because of finite resources it makes far more ecological sense to produce hybrids with the same supply of batteries then a much smaller number of full electric vehicles or plug-ins. The environmental impact of producing 100 Corolla or RAV4 hybrids is far greater than someone buying a single model S.

    I have a Jeep renegade trailhawk. I would have jumped on a renegade PHEV in an instant. Why go with a wrangler I have no idea. I don’t see many jeepsters buying this wrangler lol. They love their gas guzzlers. I see the V8 selling more than the hybrid version. The renegade would have been a much better tester for this technology. It’s more fit for urban use I can say personally and more practical as well. What a waste of time Jeep!! I have been shopping for either a hybrid or EV. Nothing catches my eye out there. It’s either too big or too small. The renegade is the right size.

    Why is the technology so far behind, 1997 GM had the EV1 car that could do 142 miles on battery and let alone on NIMH technology.

    So why do you need to plug it in to charge it? Won't the alternator/generator charge the batteries? Sorry, I am uneducated when it comes to electric vehicles. I don't see why electric vehicles won't recharge themselves while driving instead of draining the battery. Is this a government restriction so electric companies get paid?

    Owners will be able to purchase gas and just burn it, to ensure they reach the levels of gas consumption they are used to with a Jeep.

    Electric and overlanding is a bad combo. You overload your vehicle with camping gear, airdown your tires and oversize your tires and expect electric batteries to get you to where you are going and stay out boondocking or exploring with no recharge? Even gas Jeeps carry extra gas for a reason. Even the best EV company Tesla only gets 70 percent efficiency on a 300 mile range car going at speed limits with normal load. Add suspension, gear, armor, big tires, low air pressure, bad aerodynamics you have a recipe for 40 percent battery efficiency offroad.

    Imagine in 5-7 years when Battery technology gets so better that in same battery size as this jeep we would get a 60-70 Li-ion.

      Not sure we can push Li-Ion technology that far. The increases are slowing down. May need to switch to some other battery chemistry to get there.

      @@djp1234 diesel. Diesel beats the PHEV. People hate on diesel powertrains, yet they beat PHEVs quite often in terms of efficiency.

      @@Pickuptrucktalk diesel is my top choice. I’ve been waiting for a diesel Grand Cherokee for the past 3 years, but I have a feeling they won’t bring it back. And the previous generation Grand Cherokee ecodiesel that they recalled got crippled by their software update.

    You will be paying sooo much more for the upfront cost even with the gov assistance. Nowhere near worth it. 63kw cost around $14. each charge. It takes 75 pounds of coal or 3 barrels of oil E A C H C H A R G E for 63kw. Do your research.

    This is Not a true hybrid like the Prius where it truly SELF charges and you never need to plug it in. This is a poor design.

    I have never heard a real car (EV or PHEV) have that terrible whining sound like this jeep does... yikes...

    Nah, hard pass for me! I’ll wait and see what Toyota has to offer in their new upcoming hybrid models (4x4 Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, etc...)! That jeep is overpriced and underwhelming!
