The pressurized gas tank is to make sure your fuel doesn’t go bad. If you have short commutes and plug in often, it’s quite possible that you don’t fill up for well over a month or more. So yeah, the button is for safety (depressurization so it doesn’t spray you when you open it) but has nothing to do with it being electric ⚡️.
Design must cover edge case where customer charges every day. Could have factory gas only for a very long time. If the gas engine never runs there is no opportunity to purge the carbon canister so venting the tank is discouraged. Also to avoid loss of volatiles needed for cold start and reduce peroxide from oxidation.
We’ve had our 4xe for a year in march. So far, no issues. I will note, check with your dealer often for updates to the jeep, because they won’t tell you. My wife drives it to work and doesn’t use a drop of gas for weeks. Yes, the 4xe is heavier. But, you can notice it on the highway and the jeep feels more stable and planted. It pulls our tribe overland trailer just fine, on and off-road. As always, great video. Cheers 🍻 PS, we just received some of your coffee. AMAZING!
So great to hear! I do think it is one of the most comfortable Jeep Wranglers I've ever driven, it's feels very planted on the road! So glad you are loving the coffee!!
That's a good point. The extra weight, and suspension tuned for that weight makes for a very smooth ride compared to my previous JL. I am also of the opinion that the extra weight, centered in the 4xe, made for excellent driving characteristics during our recent midwest snowmageddon.
@@dsonnek7781 that’s a lengthy conversation and a lot to type. I pull a 2k lb overland bad camp trailer. And it really depends on the terrain. Normal road conditions I lose about 2mpg. If I’m in the throttle on mountain fire roads or rougher off-road trails it gets worse. All depends on how much your in the throttle or if your locked in. That would be something for Brad to have a video on for more of a visual
I've had mine for a month! Love it! Used the on board battery to camp all night with a heated blanket plugged in. Used less than 5miles of EV range! Also made a bed platform for the rear, leveling out the battery pack
Can you post something about your bed build-out, please? The seats not folding anywhere near flat is one of the things making me hesitant to pull the trigger.
Finally someone who actually talks about the energy cost of an electric vehicle and what it cost to install the charger very informative and i think it’s absolutely crazy they haven’t come out with a standard plug it’s like going to a gas station and you can’t get gas cause that nozzle is for fords only and you have a jeep
This is the first time that I watched a video about an electric vehicle where how it works was explained extremely well. This is the Jeep I’ve been thinking about buying. Thanks Marine!!
I've had my Sahara 4XE since April, love it. I've used it mostly for rock crawling and its been a beast with no issues. I had no idea you guys pay so much for electricity, I'm in San Diego often so I knew about gas prices. Here in Austin Texas I pay 9 cents a kwh 24 hours a day, plus with solar panels I charge the Jeep for free if the sun is out (usually is) . Gas is $2.90 a gallon. Moving to the San Diego area in the future, guess I'll have to re-think my budget. Great video, nailed it. Oh, and my Dometic frig will run at least 4 days.
Thanks for your comment John and great to hear your 4xe is performing well. Energy prices here in CA are not great for sure, but it's the price we pay to live so close to all these public lands.
I’ve had mine 11 months so far. Last summer I could go a month on a tank. I don’t drive a lot and was getting 700 miles per tank charging nightly. Work is about 20 miles round trip. However over the Michigan winter, the engine starts after a couple of minutes and uses gas almost like a traditional vehicle. So I was getting around 350-400 per tank. Still good. Also, not mentioned is the 4xe tank is a few gallons smaller than the normal Jeep. This is my first every Wrangler. I’m undecided if I will get a 4xe next time (currently leasing) or ICE. I do love that the start/stop tech isn’t perceivable when leaving a stop light even with a depleted battery. Overall, I do love my Jeep.
I own one, almost a year. It is VERY good overall .. fit and finish is excellent. 30+ mpg overall. Super power and fun to play with base Teslas .. Reliability has been super .. it’s absolutely the best wrangler in terms of overall value. Mine is the high country .. monotone paint and black 20’s.
I am very happy to say I just purchased a 2022 for EV. Very happy with it. I do have a level two charger takes about two hours to charge just perfect happy with everything else that goes on with it been great so far thanks for the videos I am finding I get about 24 to 25 miles per gallon. Haven’t tried out towing but intend to do that more to come. Thanks again.
About 20mpg. But I have a lift, aftermarket steel bumpers, rock rails and 35s. And I haven’t really been able to use electric all winter because it’s been too cold.
Excellent video Brad, thank you. Ordered my wife's back in October and took delivery 3 weeks ago. Excellent so far. PS for DIY'ers, level two charging can be a bit more affordable. My cost was roughly $720. This included the Grizzly E (Nema 650), hubbell 650 recepticle, square D QO 50A breaker (GFCI), J-box with mudd ring, 6' of AWG #6, $60 permit fee from my county.
I believe the delay in the fuel door release to release pressure is to keep air out of the fuel tank in order to keep the gasoline from going bad over time. Many PHEV drivers go months without putting fresh gas in their tanks. At least that's the information provided with my Honda Clarity PHEV.
I went from 2019 rubicon to 4XE for about 8 months. Love it. I wish you would have covered the difference in fuel economy from standard v6 rubicon to 4XE. That was the most shocking as I was only getting 15.5 city / 18.0 hwy on my 2019.
@@jlv3x Every body says they're patiently waiting, but I don't want to wait years before I can go Overlanding and do stuff. I am assuming people that say this already have some all terrain vehicle.
my 2018 2.0 I4 jeep rubicon also utilizes that DC to DC charger off a 48V mild hybrid pack. it's kinda weird... but it's the only vehicle where the stop/start doesn't bother me cause it's not cranking the actual cold start starter every time. It uses that huge BSG on the engine to turn it over on hot start.
Thank you for the break down on your energy bill. I always ask people I know who have EV's and PHEV's, but it is a subject they rather like to avoid discussing. Now that I know how inexpensive it really is, my next purchase will most likely be a Grand Cherokee 4Xe Trailhawk or Summit Reserve.
I'm checking for info on the hybrid JT every day, I can't wait until they reveal it. I was thinking maybe that's why they're saying it will be a 2024 model, so they can configure a bigger battery in it.
I'm guessing for now it will be the same as the JL but they do have a big space opposite the fuel tank where people are putting aux tanks. That would be a good location. But more battery equals more weight, and less payload, which can be important for those of us using it as a truck or for long camping trips.
The video is a year old but still very relevant information while I'm awaiting my 2024 4xe. A couple of questions if you're still willing: 1. Did you have 35" tires from the dealer, or after market? 2. If they were after market, did you see a change in the electric range or gas mileage with 35's? 3. Did you add an after market suspension to fit the 35's or just the stock 4xe suspension? Sorry if these have been asked and answered, but thanks in advance.
Brad it was cool when you hooked up with the boys from Canada both Sean and the guys from Epic do great work up in Canada.. I look forward to you and Marco working your way up to visit Sean before your Alaskan trip... It would be a great training run and big time video for both channels... Love your videos as always brother..... The Banks family
The concern I have about getting a 4xe is the "Jeep things". I have 2 2020 JLURs manufactured 4 months apart. They are supper fun vehicles and by far my most favorite vehicle I have owned. However, both have had quarks about them. Both have had their radios replaced. Their on board navagation sucks. The aux switches were replaced on one. The eLocker was replaced. Both steering boxes were replaced. All under warranty. The "hidden" battery that goes out every 2 years. Both my wife and I were 4x4ing out in the boonies when both vehicles at the same bump in the road went nuts. The dash board lit up. 4x4 malfunction, lockers inoperable, swaybar error. We stuck it in 2 wheel drive and was unable to continue. A buddy recommended I shut it down and open/close the door. Started it up again and no problem. Dealer said it just needed a reset and everything was okay. Love my Jeep, but there is no way I would want my Jeep any more dependant on Jeep's electrical/software team.
Yep...I had those issues plus others in 2 years of owning a jlu. There's a reason jeep quality and service consistently rates poorly. I finally got sick of it and sold it...haven't missed it much.
I hate to open Pandora's box. But the payload factors in max tongue weight. So If you're not towing you probably got another 350 lbs of payload (although you will exceed the advisory on the sticker). The GVWR on my 2024 (with the new full float axle) is 6600, and the curb weight (of mine, no winch) is 5460 lbs. So I have 1140 payload before reaching GVWR.
That 850 lb payload decal is so confusing! I too have a 6,600 lb GVWR and curb weight of 5,320 lbs., 2024 Rubicon 4XE. Where did you learn that tongue weight was a factor? Doing some research regarding this, I found some forums that believe that the 850 lb payload decal is generic across all 4 doors and 720 lb decals is generic for all 2 doors, which is in conflict with Jeep's specifications and GVWR's. I owned a Gladiator and compared the payload stickers with other Gladiators and found all were different: 1116, 1440, and 1200 pounds.
Great video! I learned a lot. Just got my Rubicon 2 days ago and Im trying to learn more about it. Not going to do serious rock crawling but Im looking forward to some dunes and back country mountain roads.
Great explanation of the vehicle. I’ve watch a few reviews of this wrangler and this is one of the best. I wish the electric range would be a bit better considering the average commute is about 30 miles.
11:35 actually, from what you said, charging during the day cost exactly 5 dollars for the 17 kW battery to take you 24 miles. That’s right on the cusp of not being efficient at all. And I don’t believe that it is more efficient charging with the updated plug, it is just faster, not more efficient.
Two things from a Jeep owner: The 12V battery under the hood is only warranted for 24 months. I learned the hard way the stop start auxiliary battery recharges off the main and when it fails it usually takes the main one with it. So that said if you're going to run high draw devices like the Dometic get an Optima yellow top, Anti Gravity or similar battery that can handle the extra load. Regarding the charger situation until everything is switched to Tesla/ NACS as is happening now there should be an adapter out there to allow you to use your J-STD plug.
Really cool review on the 4xe and I bet jeep will more then likely find ways to improve the payload capacity over time this is still new technology to jeep but it seams like a great vehicle or like you said a great vehicle to get from point a to point b daily I like this review and the fact that the honesty comes out about the pros and cons! Thank you Brad for another great video!
Brad…the reason I believe the hybrid Jeep was the best selling electric vehicle (hybrid) was due to the tax rebate….could you talk more about it and how it’s used to offset ones tax liability in future vids….thanks.
@@CaptVic-xg2vc that's CRAZY. I have a pretty good hook up, ordered my wife's Rubicon. As built 65K, paid 58K. If anyone wants to order one, let me know...between 8-9% under msrp
@Bill Waterhouse I just went back to look and make sure I was correct. It was actually $78,733 out the door. I have a picture of the work up because I was in such shock. They had a nice sting ray grey 4xe and i really wanted it. I'll wait for the market to come back down.
From what I understand the drive battery operates as a maintainer for deep cycle battery while the vehicle is shut down so you should be able to run your domestic cooler as long as you want. This is what I’m TALKIN BOUT!! I love this vehicle so much!
My interest was just piqued earlier today on the Wrangler 4xe. The first one of these I ever saw was at a hotel in Moab early in the morning. It was plugged in charging up. Someone, from Jeep Corporation (it hadn't been launched yet) had apparently stayed in the same hotel my wife and I had stayed in the night before. It could be that a hybrid Wrangler may be a wonderful fit for my wife and I here on Molokai. (As a second car to our extremely reliable 2012 JK Rubicon Unlimited.) Your videos are always great. Until earlier today, I never had any desire to buy/rent and electric car of any kind. Someone else's video on a 4xe Wrangler got my attention! Great work on all your videos. Welcome your oldest son to the World of Jeep! Andy McKane.
I have a Mach-E and we just got a Hybrid Maverick. Looking forward to a BEV Wrangler but the PHEV does sound nice. Use PlugShare to find EVSEs, you can filter by plug type.
I have a 4xe Sahara with a 2.5” lift and 35” Ridge Grapplers. I drive 40 miles one way to work. I average on a warm day 26 miles for electric. Once it hits 50 degrees that number averages 20-23 miles. I charge at home and at work and can typically go 600-750 miles on a full tank. I don’t mind paying $40-$45 a week on gas. My last car I was spending $80-$90 a week in my Cherokee Trailhawk prior to this Jeep.
Excellent! I own a 16 y/o Wrangler and I think it is time for an update. It has been my daily drive. I commute only 4 miles to and from work. The Jeep Wrangler 4XE would be a perfect fit!
Great video. I just got the 2024 Wrangler Sahara 4xe last week. So far I love it. Its my 5th wrangler and first hybrid. Great info. I'm going to have to get used to less storage in the back due to the battery under the seats but I'll manage. Thanks for posting.
Glad you brought up the cost to charge etc. So at normal CA gas prices ( $3.50 - $4.00 gallon ), and paying normal price for electric ( .30 / kw ) gas would be cheaper. Even at a discount from the utility company the difference is pretty much negligible. And how much extra does someone pay for the " electric " capability over a equivalent gas only model ? The price increase would pay for a lot of gas. Turns out you can't get somethin for nothin after all. Hopefully I don't sound like I'm being negative, just trying to acknowledge a reality check.
I would also like to add when the fed/state governments realize they are loosing gas tax revenue they will eventually start taxing electricity used on road. At which then it would be more expensive. California gas tax .51 fed .18 per gallon not to mention all the other fees added in.
My husband and I just purchased a Jeep Wrangler 4xe and are learning all we can about it. Your video is very helpful. Thank you for the charging tips and the So Cal Edison EV program. We can't believe gas prices are reaching $7/ gallon! Outrageous.
Great video!! From a view point as automotive engineer, you explained the PHEV and related add's perfectly. I like the 4e and look for purchase one. Looking forward to your experince On and Off Road!
All new electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles other than Teslas use a J-1772 plug. For DC fast charging (level 3) EVs use the CCS plug (other than Teslas). However, plug-in hybrids cannot do DC fast charging. So when out and about you'll have to look for a level 2 charger
Great info! I’ve had my 4xe for a month. Put on a Smittybilt XRC front bumper and Warn winch. The 4xe replaced my 2dr JL which I towed behind my RV. I’m a little concerned about the weight and the additional weight of the bumper and winch. On a quick trial run, it towed just fine. On the road it drives great. Looking forward to more videos on the 4xe.
What a great video. This should be a video that everyone watches before buying. 9:00 That's a good use of the PlugShare app. You can put filter out all charging stations except for J-1772. Speaking of J-1772, it's kind of become the unofficial standard for level 2 charging in North America. CCS is for DC Fast Charging and is sort of the unofficial standard for DCFC in North America.
The J1772 is the standard plug for the US. CCS is the J1772 with DC connection plugs for level 3 fast charging. Tesla does its own thing. CHADEMO plugs are being slowly replaced by CCS.
Love this 4XE content!! Great info on the after-hours electricity rate. Hopefully, my state has something simliar. I bought one a couple weeks ago and I LOVE IT! Thanks for the videos! Can't wait to see those 4XE Mods!!
I live in south texas can’t seem to find one. Would love to trade mine in for electric due to insane fuel prices . Sky 1 touch would be the cherry on top
@@jeepgrl4888 Check out Lithia Jeep in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was blown away with how much inventory they had! Definitely the largest Jeep inventory in this State.
I have solar panels that are paid for so charging is free and the 27 mile average charge takes me to work and back, it makes great because I fuel once every two months. Awesome video thanks for the information master chief. Noticed your Navy shadow box on the wall 😊 thank you for your service.
Great review even in 2024. Thanks for the info regarding the power company. It applied to NY, too. I didn’t realize that. And you’re spot on with who it is for. Most of my driving is under 20 miles. I put a level 2 in and use pure electric 98% of the time. So there that, and it is a lot of fun to drive with an open rooftop. Thanks!
Wow, I've learned so much from this video! I really had no idea what Jeep's plug in hybrid really meant until now, so thank you! I totally agree that there needs to be a standard for EV plugs, especially as our state (CA) and the country invests more heavily in charging infrastructure. I am even more excited for the next generation of the 4xE for the possibility of better efficiency. As pretty much everyone on this channel knows, the biggest negative of owning a Jeep is paying at the pump, and I would like to see an effective 40+ mpg Hybrid or EV down the road, especially as gas prices are expected to continue to rise.
@@johnmills4310 thanks, didnt know that. All i'm saying is these companies should standardize their charging rather than having the apple charger vs micro usb vs usc-c fight all over again. Having a universal charging system would pave the road for future EV infrastructure which would benefit all EV companies. Very few people are actually against EVs, they just don't see them as practical because you cannot take them out of major cities. Lets not have a company that cant even line up their quarter panels slow us down from having chargers everywhere.
PlugShare App is great for finding charging stations. Can filter plugs you see based on what you can use and can also pay in the app for chargers that cost money. Highly recommend! Also have been able to run my battery down far enough that it takes 16.5 hours to charge back to full on a 120v Level 1 charger. Love it so far though! No gas for months!
This looks great! In NY electricity costs have gone thru the roof, gas is only about $5.50 or $ 6.00 a gallon. When I move to Florida I’ll look into this, bc costs are affordable there
@@TrailRecon There is a definite place for 4xe in the day trip off-roader world; however, the lack of a flat floor up to the front seats is a deal-breaker for me. Ever sense see the Goose Gear flooring on TrailRecon I'm hooked on the convenience and extra storage they offer. I don't think Goose Gear would be a meaningful option in the 4xe.
Was going to say the same thing- industry standard level 1 &2 is j1772. Industry standard for dc fast charging level 3 is CCS and Chadmeo (older standard- basically Nissan liefs). The Tesla plug is for level 1-3, making it unique. There are tesla to 1772 adaptors for level 1 & 2 and cost about a hundred bucks... great video!
Wow very excited! We got our 4xe in May with a 2” MOPAR lift. One of the first one off the line in North Texas. We are very happy with it. Even got the same Level 2 charger! Great video!
Great video. Keep 4xE content coming, I’m super interested! You made a comment about payload capacity. Help us understand (maybe in a future video) how getting close to that is a bad thing. Does that mean extra wear and tear? Perhaps the components aren’t sturdy enough to support it? Or is it just a general guideline that no one bothers listening to because it really doesn’t matter…
Great video. One thing about putting down the back seats is that you can lift up the headrest to slot in between the bottom seat and the battery allowing the folded seat to just be a little more flat (but unfortunately the 8 in ledge is still there. Good incentive to get a drawer system 😀
I have been looking at one myself ....Great Information keep it up ! ....Lots to know before investing 60 K into the 4 x E but so far seem well worth the learning curve.
Thanks for addressing the electric charging cost and limitations. Trying to work out the electric vs gas fuel cost benefits , a rough “napkin”calculation gives a break even point of $0.33/kWH …IF your gas is $5/Gallon and IF your miles per full battery charge is equal to gas mpg. Too many legislative variables in energy cost, electric or gas, and ultimately battery life/replacement to calculate any long term savings to owner or planet. But, it’s good to discuss and figure out real world options for those of us who like or need a 4WD vehicle.
Very helpful. I am considering alternative vehicles for a work vehicle with the goal being to purchase one in the next year and a half to two years... The 4xe looks cool but the rear storage and payload are valid concerns that I haven't seen discussed on other reviews.
Hey brad, So just a heads up the places that have charges for the jeep are places like kohls, some grocery stores specifically giant… forget the name out there but it’s not vons. Also most malls have electric charging and I know my company here on the east coast has charging stations. If I bought a 4xe I would get to charge for free at my company because they are promoting less gas. To offset some of your cost of the electric you could always do what my dad did in Florida and put solar on your roof to charge the vehicle and the house without really having to pay the electric company.
how did you get this to work Brandon Haneline on YT tried one of these with his 4XE and couldn't get the charger to charge his jeep from the tesla chargers.
The nice thing about the 4xe rear seats is that you can store items in the passenger foot well when the seat is folded down, which is not the case with the standard JL. Pro tip :)... Your ham/gmrs radio mounts quite nicely to the bottom of the drivers side passenger seat. Also, if your missing the cup holders, this is easy to add back by removing the "cup holder delete" organizer and replacing it with the standard JL passenger console.
Brad, one clarification. In the US, every new EV sold uses the J1772 plug for level 2 charging -- except Tesla. Tesla has an adapter that allows use of J1772 plugs too. I believe older Nissan Leafs used a different charger. But J1772 really IS the defacto standard plug for Level 2 charging in the US.
I pulled up to a charging station last week that only had CCS and CHAdeMo level 2 chargers, no J1772 and I've been to other stations that didn't have CCS, so I think there are still some gaps in standardization.
@@TrailRecon Go tell whoever is still running CHADeMo they aren't helping at all. That is the Japanese standard that only Nissan and Mitsubishi ever used in the US. J1772 is the SAE spec for Level 2 charging. CCS is the SAE spec for high speed DC charging. Most PHEVs don't use CCS, as there really isn't a need to charge that small of a battery that fast. CCS won't ever be used in homes as it far exceeds the electrical service capabilities. So, I was merely saying that a defacto standard exists in the US. For Level 2, it is J1772, For DC fast charge it is CCS. Now whether shopping center owners actually want to help their clients -- or just do a bit of greenwashing about how they have EV chargers -- is a whole other question.
@@jeffrey.edgett Just for the record? You're absolutely right with everything you said here, except with the old (slowly dying out) CHADeMo standard? Most places with a level 3 DC fast charger still have that connector because they installed their charging station many years ago. Level 3 chargers like that cost well over $80,000 in many cases, so they're not going to be quick to scrap one. Tesla used to sell a CHADeMo to Tesla adapter (big clunky device that sold for about $400!), and I've noticed many of the public libraries and colleges with a CHADeMO capable fast charger own one of these adapters too. They'll loan it to Tesla owners who want to charge there. So that's one way they still get used, besides just Mitsubishi and Nissan vehicles.
Wow…a lot to consider and know before taking the plunge BUT, so interesting. Thanks for sharing all of this information! It has me thinking about things more thoroughly. 🥾🥾😎
With a little ingenuity l, I think you could make a lightweight removable bed system w some 80/20 aluminum that can level out that raised backseat situation. Love this Jeep. I want one. Thanks for the reviews you do on these. Look forward to future ones👍
Actually I fell in love with jeep rubicon 4xe only one problem is the battery that takes up too much space. Because I often camp in the car and it becomes a bit cramped if I make a platform to sleep on. Please pay attention to the interior in the future.
This video is perfect for me. I’ve been intrigued as you about the wrangler 4xe. I have a gladiator that I love but can’t wait to trade in for a new gladiator 4xe.
Brad, I’m so glad you posted this video! We’re in Charlotte, NC and the 4xe is perfect for us. City by the day, and weekend fun. You nailed it! But I really want to get your opinions on overlanding it. I see some pros and definitely some cons, but I think it will be interesting trying to find some unique ways to set it up. I’m interested in what you end up doing, so keep those videos coming. And don’t go all Ford on us now… 😂
Thank you for this video. I’m a home care nurse and want a wrangler. But the gas mileage is holding home back when I’m driving 80-90 miles a day at time. This looks like a good option.
I converted mine into a sleeper camper/ flatbed. I added an extra storage space to the back to make up for the 6 inch rise. (also great for hiding purchases.) and removed the back seat behind the driver adding another storage compartment. as far as I can tell that's the easiest way to add a sleeping space for someone over 5'6". luckily the girlfriend is short so we still have room for 2 extra people in the back seat.
My Sahara is only a couple hundred pounds lighter, and I got 30 mpg on a 120 mile trip yesterday with gas only (esave mode) I'll take that. Of course this is with keeping your foot from getting frisky. At 73 my foot has calmed down. If you need the nut... it is there, like passing on curvy roads. It bolts like a hemi.
Had my 4xe for about a year. I continually have charging errors as well as a stock jeep charge cord failure. Bought a OBD reset tool to clear the codes so Im not running into the dealer for everything but overall not overjoyed about the "hybrid" aspect of the jeep as I have two other plugin hybrids and zero issues.
I’ve been happy with my EcoDiesel and it has been rocking a solid 32-34 on road trips. It may not be a plug in hybrid, but it gets soooo much better MPGs than my pentastar did.
@@unitaper totally agree with it when you look at it from a spreadsheet. Rubber on road was a little different. My Pentastar was getting about 16 mpg on road trips under average circumstances. We are relatively close to a lot of activities, but still have to do a couple hours driving for most adventures so we are cranking out the miles. When lined up against each other, the EcoDiesel has been better off and we will hit that break even point much quicker. On paper, it never made sense though.
@@P4SDetails Have you had any issues with turbo lag? I had the 2nd gen in my 2016 RAM and, when they reprogrammed the engine for the emissions lawsuit, it developed scary turbo lag. One more reprogramming made it a bit better but still unsafe so I sold it for a 2020 with the Hemi. But I've always been curious about the 3rd gen in the Wrangler...
Will definitely consider the Gladiator 4xe when it comes out. We already have a Chevy Bolt EV and it's great around town, not a much on long trips due to limited range. We also had a PHEV Mitsubishi, which I didn't like because without the battery, on long trips it only got about 250 miles on a tank of gas. We have solar here at our place in San Diego so my wife literally pays nothing to drive her car (other than our now paid off PV system).
I would love a gladiator 4xe, but are they actually going to do that? I had emailed Jeep about it and they responded they didn’t have enough market for it, which I though was odd. So maybe they just keeping the veil on it.
Ouch, $5/gal gas?!! You should move to the Midwest. Only $3/gal here. Love the 4Xe. We got a ‘21 JLUR with the 3.6L last Fall that we had ordered. But if I had to do over, I would strongly consider the 4Xe. Thanks for the video!
I’m considering solar panels and a power wall for my house. My thought would be that would cut the cost of charging the jeep. What are your thoughts on that?
wow that was some good information, didn't know that model beat out the Toyota Prius. thank you again for the info!!,..your just plain awesome!!,..ooyah fellow shipmate!!
Tons of interesting info. Most interesting for me the extra power for powering fridge and other accessories. Admittingly I was no fan of the hybrid concept until I heard that. But it makes perfect sense. Also I now recall the hybrid trucks that once GM offered used to be very popular with contractors for the somewhat similar reasons as well.
I see you were a Corpsman at one of the Recruit Training Regiments. San Diego or Parris Island? Also see you were with the Fleet Marine Forces as well. Ooh rah.
The RTR guidon is actually mine. Brad and I were both FMF Corpsmen, but the guidon is from my time as the FRO (Family Readiness Officer) for 1st RTB at MCRD San Diego. We left San Diego when Brad took orders as the senior enlisted leader at the Parris Island clinic…and I was briefly the FRO for 3rd RTB there. 😁
BRAD how can I find the area you went wheeling in borrego with the epic guys? I went out to Ocotilla for the first time last weekend and found truck haven but didnt see anything like what you drove through
Brad! Thank you so much for explaining in a way I can understand better. This is VERY interesting for an overland situation. Yes, extra weight with the battery but… now the though of a couple of extra things I a may not need like you said about the Jackery. I am so glad you are sharing real world content on this as this was a Jeep model I was always curious about but never could pull the trigger on for myself. The more & more I look at it, & honestly the more content you make on it, the more I am thinking it is a great solution for my wife & I. It may still be a year or two yet before we can fit that into our budget but man, will I keep an eye on the content you keep making with this vehicle. Can’t wait to see you do more off road stuff with Marco & the crew & give us some more real life feed back on it. Thank you, thank you, thank you sir!
Thank you for the video. Do you know if one could charge the 12 volt battery via solar and if there is a built in dc to dc converter that will charge the battery pack? Or if there is some other way to solar charge the pack? Thanks
Thanks for the video Brad! I have a JLUR 3.6 right now that's about to be paid off. Thinking about buying the 4xe next or waiting for the fully electric to come out. 🤔
Just another thing that can break

We’ve had our 4xe for a year in march. So far, no issues. I will note, check with your dealer often for updates to the jeep, because they won’t tell you. My wife drives it to work and doesn’t use a drop of gas for weeks. Yes, the 4xe is heavier. But, you can notice it on the highway and the jeep feels more stable and planted. It pulls our tribe overland trailer just fine, on and off-road. As always, great video. Cheers 🍻
PS, we just received some of your coffee.

How is your gas mileage when towing?
That's awesome how did you manage that with the blanket?
Have any post of the bed platform?
Can the engine or/and solar Panel charge the battery for overlanding ?
Can you post something about your bed build-out, please? The seats not folding anywhere near flat is one of the things making me hesitant to pull the trigger.
Finally someone who actually talks about the energy cost of an electric vehicle and what it cost to install the charger very informative and i think it’s absolutely crazy they haven’t come out with a standard plug it’s like going to a gas station and you can’t get gas cause that nozzle is for fords only and you have a jeep
There is a standard connector plug. J1772 for Level 1/2 charging, and CCS for DC fast charging.
Moving from Texas to California????????

How’s your 4xe avg mpg? I’m lookin to get one soon!

Congrats on the new Jeep!

That was the most shocking as I was only getting 15.5 city / 18.0 hwy on my 2019.

my 2018 2.0 I4 jeep rubicon also utilizes that DC to DC charger off a 48V mild hybrid pack. it's kinda weird... but it's the only vehicle where the stop/start doesn't bother me cause it's not cranking the actual cold start starter every time. It uses that huge BSG on the engine to turn it over on hot start.
Just bought a 4xe and we love it! Thanks for the great review, very helpful in our decision process!

Had mine for a month and it’s a high altitude. Can’t explain how awesome the Jeep is. I got 1600km in my first tank
I'm interested to see how they do a hybrid JT. Seems they should have more space to put the battery in the longer frame, maybe even a bigger battery.
That is the one thing I'm curious about as well
I'm checking for info on the hybrid JT every day, I can't wait until they reveal it. I was thinking maybe that's why they're saying it will be a 2024 model, so they can configure a bigger battery in it.
I wish it wasn't going to take so long. :/
I'm guessing for now it will be the same as the JL but they do have a big space opposite the fuel tank where people are putting aux tanks. That would be a good location. But more battery equals more weight, and less payload, which can be important for those of us using it as a truck or for long camping trips.
They are going to do a hybrid hurricane engine. Gladiator will get that one not this 2L version

And the 4xe’s are known to have issues as well. Although they are likely the minority but a huge pain for those who have them.
Yep...I had those issues plus others in 2 years of owning a jlu. There's a reason jeep quality and service consistently rates poorly. I finally got sick of it and sold it...haven't missed it much.
ya that little battery is trash, Fiat + electronics = bad
That’s why I drive an 84 cj-8.
Great video Brad, as usual! I've had my 4xe for six months and love it!
Thank you and great to hear!

Being a Jeep owner and a Tesla owner this is a great explanation video!

Outrageous.

Are the 4XE towable for RVer's?
I rented a 4xE GC and could not find a compatible charger using google maps, however the Navigation app pointed me to the correct charging station.

I totally agree that there needs to be a standard for EV plugs, especially as our state (CA) and the country invests more heavily in charging infrastructure. I am even more excited for the next generation of the 4xE for the possibility of better efficiency. As pretty much everyone on this channel knows, the biggest negative of owning a Jeep is paying at the pump, and I would like to see an effective 40+ mpg Hybrid or EV down the road, especially as gas prices are expected to continue to rise.
tesla charges with a different voltage
@@johnmills4310 thanks, didnt know that. All i'm saying is these companies should standardize their charging rather than having the apple charger vs micro usb vs usc-c fight all over again. Having a universal charging system would pave the road for future EV infrastructure which would benefit all EV companies. Very few people are actually against EVs, they just don't see them as practical because you cannot take them out of major cities. Lets not have a company that cant even line up their quarter panels slow us down from having chargers everywhere.

Hi Brad, your "as an overlander" comment says it all to me. Your 4Xe is not long for the TrailRecon channel.
I'm trying to be optimistic, but I think there are things to considers, especially the fuel tank size which is the smallest in the Wrangler lineup.
The J1772 plug only is for level 1 and level 2 charging. The 4xe does not have DC fast charging capability which is what the CCS plug is for.

Hey brad,
So just a heads up the places that have charges for the jeep are places like kohls, some grocery stores specifically giant… forget the name out there but it’s not vons.
I keep a tesla conversion cable in my 4xe and can use the tesla destination chargers.
how did you get this to work Brandon Haneline on YT tried one of these with his 4XE and couldn't get the charger to charge his jeep from the tesla chargers.
@@jeepgirl2791 i honestly didn't know people were having that problem, I even have the exact same charger as him and i have never had an issue.
Great review! I have an order coming in 2 months . I can’t wait!!
I'd love to see more 4xe content! I have a Rubicon 4xe on order and I need something to tide me over while I wait :)
Brad…where do you get your hood decals made? They always look fantastic
The $3k price tag and price of diesel, it’s gonna take almost 4 years to breakeven based on average mileage driven in the US
@@unitaper totally agree with it when you look at it from a spreadsheet.
@@regenakowitz 'Rah! I went thru 2nd RTB at MCRD San Diego in '99, so I'm pretty sure neither of you were there at that time! lol
Thank you so much for this video. I’m definitely saving this so I can look back to get further information for the 4xe I’m getting ready to get!!!
BRAD
how can I find the area you went wheeling in borrego with the epic guys? I went out to
Ocotilla for the first time last weekend and found truck haven but didnt see anything like what you drove through
Thanks
Loved the video. My wife and I are looking forward to the arrival of our plug-in Wrangler in April!
I suppose I will stick with my Prius prime, bluetti and 4Runner for a while, but I found this fascinating, thanks.
Thanks for the video Brad! I have a JLUR 3.6 right now that's about to be paid off. Thinking about buying the 4xe next or waiting for the fully electric to come out. 🤔
