  • Today, my mom and all her brothers got together with grandma to cook dishes that they used to eat when they were younger! Featured dishes include: Corned Beef Hash, Spam and Beans, Beef Tomato, and Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs!
Special thank you to my mom, dad, uncle Warren, uncle Owen, uncle Benjie, grandma, and Reid for making this video possible!
    CORNED BEEF HASH
    Fresh corned beef (shredded)
    2 peeled and boiled potatoes
    1/2 onion (sautéed)
    Eggs (To you liking)
    SPAM AND BEANS
    1 can Spam amzn.to/31obF52
    2 carrots
    1 pkg green beans
    1/2 round onion
    BEEF TOMATO
Soak 1 pound of sukiyaki style beef about 20" in this sauce:
    1 tbs grated fresh ginger
    1tsp cornstarch
    1 tsp sugar
    2 1/2 tsp shoyu amzn.to/3ENVxZe
    3 tbs sake
    Stir-fry:
    Oil
    Chopped garlic 2-3 cloves
    1 lb beef
Remove beef from pan just before fully cooked
    Stir fry one onion, sliced
    Add 2-3 stalks celery, sliced
Just before fully cooked, add beef back to the pan for about two minutes.
Add about one T. of sugar (Grandpa used to use C&H)
    2 T. shoyu and ketchup
Add sliced tomatoes and bell peppers. Remove from heat after one minute.
Do not cover the pan to retain the bright colors of the peppers and prevent overcooking.
    SWEET SOUR SPARE RIBS
5 lb Spare ribs (Cut into pieces)
    1/3 C. flour
    1/3 C. Shoyu
Mix by hand and brown in oil

    1/3 C. shoyu
    1 T. salt

    dash of cornstarch
    canned pineapple (optional) amzn.to/31y4p6R

Great video! I remember many of these dishes too growing up, particularly spam and string beans. Yes, the beans were grown in the backyard or the neighbors would bring over and share. So good to hear your mom and her brothers share stories growing up in Papaaloa and to have them in a video like this. Your grandma looks so great for her age. Would love to see more videos like this!

When we don't have meat in our freezer, spam is the solution. lol. Spam is good with every dish. stir fry veggie with spam, egg with spam, soup with spam. it's the bacon or ham in our meal..

This brings back so many memories!! Not only of the food but of that kitchen and the dining table. Yes, your Grandpa (my Uncle Haru) as a very meticulous cook, everything had to be "just so". Loved growing up with this family! Please give my love to your Aunt and Uncles and a big hug for your Grandma!! Much love to you all!!

Wonderful to see your mother and her siblings get together to share memories and cook meals that they grew up with. This video truly made me feel nostalgic for simpler times, too. My grandmother prepared similar meals and although she is no longer with us, she lives on whenever I cook something that she made. I echo your sentiment about connecting through food. Please keep filming these videos, as they truly are what Hawaii is about...ohana, and sharing aloha through our meals.

First I’ll like to give your ohana my condolences 💐
You are truly blessed to have such beautiful memories made and shared with with all of us. I wish I could of done this with my grand parents, who also lived plantation style, in paauilo.
I remember the backyard garden and I could really relate when uncle Warren & Benji started taking about the green bean😂 but it’s true, it shows how much love went into growing the vegetables, now days it’s different. Your mom was right about using canned corn beef, and Benji was right about cooking the veggies first. Lol.
For the past 20yrs I been making these meals for my wife and kids now, although it’s a little different, it’s the same thing. When I make spam and green beans, I just add water and more shoyu with cornstarch to make a gravy. (No carrots 🥕) lol, idk why because we had carrots growing in the garden an oh how I loved to pull them out when ready. It’s amazing how your videos brings back so many great memories. Thank you so much for making and sharing your videos and stories.

Oh, how I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I really like the recipes but especially loved your family sharing their memories of growing up and honoring your grandpa and grandma. My family on Oahu weren't plantation people but we still ate very similar meals like your grandpa and grandma made. Your family is just like my family back home in Hawai'i ...so full of love. We've been living in West Texas for the past 9 years and watching your videos makes me soooooo homesick for Hawai'i, the food, and the people. Please keep on sharing your recipes and family memories with us!

Thank you so much Genny! It's nice to know that these videos help to remind you of home. Hope you and your family are doing well in Texas! Much love and aloha from Hawaii!

I never thought of making corned beef hash in a pan in the oven, but now I going try 🤙🏽 easier than making patties 😀also haven’t seen that spam dish before but going try too. I asked my mom if they had it and she said yeah but gramma put cabbage sometimes. My dad was from the mainland and never ate spam so we didn’t have it in our house. Only had at my Aunty dems house for breakfast kine when I slept over. And of course when I got older I ate more spam. Mahalo for sharing ❤

Thanks for the comment! Let me know how the hash turns out if you do end up making it! Honestly, anything with spam is probably delicious! haha! Thanks again for watching!

I’m originally from Honolulu (living on the mainland) and enjoyed this video so much. We ate the same foods growing up…grandma and my mom were also excellent cooks. My grandparents were both from Okinawa. I’ve subscribed to your channel and would love to see more of your sweet family. Maybe one of the siblings can cook Nishime? 😋 Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for keeping local foods going alot of old time traditions in Hawaii are no longer practiced or passed down to the younger generations the ways of old are becoming or have already been lost in this modernized world we must keep Hawaii family traditions going by teaching our keiki for they are the future of Hawaii

What a great family! Keep the traditions even though it seems like you all moved to Oahu. Aloha and God Bless your Ohana! I am from Kona and grew up in the Macadamia Nut orchards, but the lifestyle seems very similar for that era of 60s-70s.

Aloha, I discovered your channel very recently. I am thoroughly enjoying all the dishes that are being prepared. This video, especially, brought back so many memories of how my Dad cooked. I love the Spam dish and am going to have to make it. I love doing different things with Spam. One of my favorites is Spam with cabbage. The Beef Tomato is very much like how my Dad fixed it. He always said Ketchup was the secret ingredient. I have tried so many recipes for Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs and none of them have been like what I remembered my Dad fixing. So I am going to try this one. Could you tell me how much Vinegar your uncle put in the dish? Thank you so much!

Hi Betty! Glad you found my channel and that it brought back good memories for you! Hope you enjoy the recipes! Spam with cabbage sounds delicious. I think my mom used to make that as well. Hope you’re able to try the beef tomato. Let me know how it turns out!

For the beef tomato, I believe he did marinate the meat first. Let me know how it turns out!
