Thai and Cantonese share similar pronunciations for many animal words. Examples are the words for chicken, bee, elephant and horse. Also, the tonal system is similar between the two languages.

Cantonese cuisine is very popular in Peru and this particular dish is the origin of the very Peruvian "Lomo Saltado". We eat it with rice (sounds familiar?) and fried potatoes. If a fried egg is added then it is a "lomo saltado montado".

@@SerenityEscape0823 No, this technique (velveting) is mainly limited to cantonese restauarants however, I do use it with certain cuts of meat.

Loved this. I'm used to seeing the cornstarch go in to marinating the beef, or in other words, velveting the beef to provide a protective coating to prevent overcooking and resulting in tender meat. I think my dad would "scramble" the egg within the dish so that it had the texture of egg drop, barely cooked streaks in the sauce. This video totally made me want to eat this.

As a Malay, I find it quite similar to our fried beef dish..the only difference is we cut the tomatoes into smaller chunks, add fried potatoes which is cut just like how you cut the tomatoes and we also add some big onions that we cut into rings just a minute or two before it's done so as to add a bit of sweetness to the dish. The rest of the ingredients are basically the same but we can also add some chilli and a bit of black pepper if we want to make it spicier.

There is a very similar Cantonese dish called 番茄炒蛋. Basically, this dish is the exact same recipe except that scrambled eggs replace the beef. Perhaps Auntie Jennie conflated the two dishes since she prefers scrambled eggs. And I am guessing that Craig may have further evolved the addition of egg by preferring crispy sunny side eggs (like many SE Asian dishes). Just a guess. At the end of the day, it's all good.

I used to go to a Cantonese restaurant in Sacramento. They used lots of onions and skimped on the meat. I still have no complaints and I don't even know if that place is still there. I moved to Florida. Would be pretty hard to find that one again. Lots of things you forget after 15 years.
