Push Back Not Up with the Lats | Snatch Technique

  • In the snatch, we need to use the lats to keep the bar close and moving into the hips as we extend.
    A common mistake is to overdo this and actually lift the bar up instead of just pushing it back toward the body.
    This moves the bar too far back and against the hips early, which means the hips drive it straight forward as you extend the body.
    On top of this, it temporarily prevents the extension of the body from actually lifting the bar-the bar slows down and may even come to a complete stop before accelerating again.
    By pushing the bar back properly, it comes into the hips as the hips move above the feet and begin moving up, allowing the leg and hip extension to move the bar up instead of the hips pushing it forward.
    Think of using the lats to push the bar back while allowing it to hang from the shoulders so it simply remains close at its present height. Remember that this push back is less of a movement than the prevention of movement-simply keep the bar as close to the legs as possible as you execute the pull, rather than allowing it to move away.

    My coach has me doing slow pull to the knees and then full speed from there. It's really helping me be able to feel what you are talking about correctly

    Does the upper back have a role to play in keeping it close to the legs?
    Should the lats be firing in the first pull?

      Lats should be active from start - that tension both helps keep upper back extended and bar close.

      @@CatalystAthletics got it thank you. For anyone else what those cues translated to for me was the following in the start:
      1. Abs tight as all heck (including the lower abs) by expanding and pushing down as explained in another Greg video.
      2. Tension in the legs AND upper back retracted down (which automatically engages the lats as explained above).
      3. The three all have to happen at the same time for it to feel “right” and strong.
      4. All three need to be maintained for the whole lift

    Sorry, might be related to this or might not. Don't have a coach, so I'll have to figure things out on my own. Been lifting 3 years.
    I've developed a habit, which mainly plagues my cleans. For some reason, when I receive the bar I'm often on my heels. I've recorded myself and I don't jump forwards or backwards, but for some peculiar reason, many times I end up almost falling backwards because the balance is incorrect. What I can tell from the videos, I don't lift my toes up when pulling and it doesn't feel like I'm on my heels while pulling.
    Only thing I can think of is that I'm having some problems with lat activation.

      Toes not lifting doesn't mean you're not balanced more toward the heels in the pull, and how you finish the pull can shift you back significantly even if you're balanced prior. Focus on a vertical push with the legs through whole foot through the top of the pull, and sitting straight down into the squat. I can't imagine a scenario when the lats would have anything to do with this issue.
