    the thing that stands out to me the most in this scene is how ellie can't even talk after what's happened. she doesn't say a word after she escapes from david and james, she can't get a full word out even after joel finds her. she just stutters and blubbers, it's all she can do to hug joel. it really drives home how horrific and traumatizing what's happened is for ellie.

    I know some folk will be disappointed that Joel doesn’t stop Ellie and comforts her and if I’m being honest, I did find the reunion in the game to be a bit more emotional. Not to say that it wasn’t in the show mind you.
    However, I think what the show does better is demonstrate how horrific this would have been for Ellie. Joel doesn’t arrive to immediately comfort her, she has to process what’s happened by herself for a bit, as do we. With everything that just happened and having to commit such a savage act of violence in order to survive will scar her and it clearly shows that here.

    A detail in the change I couldn't help but notice (and why I prefer it over the game, narrative-wise, since it's a crucial moment for Ellie to "harden"): if Joel barged in to immediately comfort Ellie like in the game, the timing indicates he may have actually been able to save her life, if she failed to reach the machete.
    On the show, she brutalizes David until she's exhausted or "snaps out" of her rage, and after some indiscernible amount of time, escapes the building - implying she was truly on her own to survive every critical second of the terrifying ordeal (absolutely no way Joel could've saved her).

    • @stelioskomenti4013
      @stelioskomenti4013 ปีที่แล้ว +155

      But it fits, right? In the whole episode we see Ellie not only surviving on her own but be the one who protects Joel. David tried to convince her that she is aggressive and brutal like he is while instead we see that she is in fact brutal, but like Joel, who becomes like a monster when he needs to protect the ones he cares about.

    • @somanytakennames
      @somanytakennames ปีที่แล้ว +23

      That is a good point, although one could argue that if you don’t reach the machete in time in the game David does kill Ellie. But I guess Ellie dying isn’t technically canon, so maybe not a valid argument? I’m not sure.

But Bella still attempting to say “he” and not being able to get it out followed by “but I…” was amazing acting. I honestly like the show version better after thinking on it. I think too many people like the idea of Joel being a saviour and a hero which is not what he is. I like that he didn't find her until after. She had to get herself to safety, joel was not there to save her. She had to get all of her rage and fear out when hitting david and decide when to stop. She had to sit there with that mutilated body and decide to leave she had moved fully into shock and dissociation by the time Joel found her instead of still being in rage mode. This version builds on Ellie's fear of being alone and Joel's fear of failing her. The way they look at each other as Joel give her his coat, they don't even blink they are staring at each other so hard. They need each other so much. I find the game plays into Joel being a hero instead of ellie saving herself, it comes off more one sided to Joel. The show high lights both of them in this moment.

    I think the shows version of this scene hits harder than in the game. Yes, in the game, Ellie kills David, but Joel swoops in so quickly that it almost feels like Joel would have saved Ellie if she couldn’t grab the machete. In the show, the doors are locked, and David has the only Keyes. If Ellie was going to live, she had to save herself.
    Since they’ve been setting it up all season, I’m sure we’ll get the giraffe scene in the finale. That was such an emotionally heartwarming scene, a moment of lightness before the hospital. The trauma that Ellie went through on the show will make that scene hit harder. We saw her broken, and now we will be able to see some of Ellie’s lighter side.

    • @thecourier7964
      @thecourier7964 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I would agree but it's kind of a moot point. Sure, in this version Ellie definitely had to save herself but how much does that add to the narrative when we know in both she didn't need to be saved. Joel pulling her off of David makes for a more personal moment between the two and builds their chemistry in a way that the show hasn't so far.

    • @SohiHien
      @SohiHien ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@thecourier7964 I don't agree with that at all. Them finding each other after ellie escapes on her own is so much more tragic. Joel feels like he has failed her and ellie has moments where she truly feels alone after she comes down from her rage (something she doesn't do in the game until Joel is there) She is so much more traumatized in the show and Joel is terrified for her because he has no idea what has happened since he doesn't see what she does to David. Also in the show Ellie reaches out to Joel first for comfort which is huge for her, she has wanted comfort from him for awhile but is scared she will be pushed away but here Joel reciprocates right away calling her what he called his daughter and giving her full comfort for the first time. It's such a beautiful moment, really showing how much they need each other. I feel the game is a bit more one sided in providing only Joel and his need to protect and be a father and not as much for ellie like the show does.

The fans of Part 2 are more likely to like his work and thus his changes to the show. They mostly gather on Reddit, while more casual people and some popular youtubers disliked his Part 2 (though he was the co-creator of Part 1) and also his changes to the series that caused weird plot holes and less emotional impact (like me).

In the show, Joel is not there and if Ellie hadn't saved herself then she would have been sexually assaulted and who knows what else. I love how Troy Baker is in this episode. You can clearly hear Joel’s voice when he speaks. There is another episode where Ashley Johnson plays as Ellie’s mother. And you also can clearly hear Ellie’s voice when she speaks lmao.

    The only thing I miss in this scene is Joel cupping Ellies face after she kills David, and he's talking to her, but we don't know what he's saying because the vocals are cut out and the music is the only thing you hear. You can tell he's comforting Ellie while her face is all screwed up in tears and emotion. Other than that little detail this scene was amazing. It took me about 3 episodes to really get used to Bella Ramsay playing Ellie, but by the end of the show I was 100% convinced they couldn't have found a better actress. She did such an amazing job.

    This is when her performance went next level, I've played the game multiple times, but wanted to cover my face when that fucking creep was attacking her. At first I hated that they didn't include Joel holding her and saying it's okay 'baby girl', but when he finds her afterwards it still worked so beautifully. Her screams and terror are so sad and scary though. It really showed she was still a child in a brutal world,

    Okay for real Bella kills it as Ellie plays her so well and Pedro as Joel both are were made for these roles in the game you can see the father and daughter relationship develop but here for live action feels more emotional well done HBO well done.

    I think they made it way more horrfying in the show then the game. They make David more disturbing, based on all the people around him who worship and follow him. I actually found the iconic "Oh baby girl" scene mroe hard hitting. I think it was sloghtly more emotive in the game. But I loved Bella interpretation in the show. The way she could barely talk, and just collapsed into Joel. Was genuinely disturbing and heatbreaking. Way Joel reassured her, was almost more depth then Joel in the game. JMO.

    This was a growing part for Ellie. Joel wasn’t there to save her this time. She had to go through this all alone without even knowing if Joel had succumbed to his injuries or not

    They somehow made this scene both hit harder, and more gruesome than it was in the game.
    1.The big difference of instead of trying to choke out Ellie, David gets ontop of her.
    2.Ellie's screaming and yelling as she hacks the absolute hell out of David is just so damn spine chilling, and it feels like she hacks him longer than she did in the game.
    And 3, the fact that Joel only finds her outside instead of while she was killing David, meaning unless Ellie told him what happened inbetween episodes, Joel doesnt even know what happened in there and what David almost did.

    Man this scene was just incredible and Ellie is so amazing! The emotions she went through just in this 4 minute sequence is mind boggling. Fear as she laid on the table contemplating her fate, Rage as she bludgeons David to death and vulnerability as she recognizes it's Joel trying to console her. Just amazing acting on Bella's part!!!

    I 100% agree that Bella did an amazing job but can we also give props to the actor who played David. I love how he went from a seemingly friendly person to a complete psychopath. If you hate the character (in the good way) you know the actor did an amazing job and this is an incredible example.
