Even if it was a good intentions, he did Joel wrong in many ways for the fans. I heard Neil kicked out the original writer from the first series, so he cooked part II like a recklessly amateur. Perhaps you forgot there's former staff from ND (probably being fired by Neil) who spoiled the Joel's death even the game not yet released, to bring a proof how dissapointing the story was.
What I love so much about Part 2 is how, on 1st playthrough, this game challenged me emotionally, spiritually, physically, and on the stick. Seeing Grounded 2, and how much love, work, and dedication all the Devs put into making this game makes me love Naughty Dog as a studio even more.
I played the last of us when it came out. This scene was heart breaking yeah. But it's... 6 mouths ago... I suddenly lost my mom. She gave her life in front of my eyes. It was a cardiac heart arrest. I don't remember much that night. But I remember how I was screaming her name while others were holding me back. The life ended for me that night. I know hkw Ellie feels now. How Joel felt when his daughter died. I wish I never knew. This hits so much different now. Life is as harsh and bitter as this. You love someone but you lose them in a blink of an eye.
I agree. Partially because the show has already gotten so much wrong, and partly because Pedro and Bella aren't as good of actors as Troy and Ashley. Bella is fantastic granted, and she might get better. She has the sassy attitude of Ellie down perfect, but I don't know if she can hit the level of emotion that Ashley Johnson did.
A pattern you will see with many clips of bts is that the takes that end up in the game are almost always the more subdued ones. Classically this was the case with the Sarah death scene (Troy won’t shut up about how much Neil humbled him for that shoot). And in the final scene of the sequel, Joel and Ellie were gonna hug on the porch, I think Ashley said they wouldn’t do that, they tried both versions and agreed to go with Ashley’s version where they don’t hug, because it made more sense for the story and again was more subdued. The Last Of Us has such an intense understanding of subtle writing. The vast majority of characterization occurs in the non-verbal, in the implicit and subtextual. Subtly.
Yep i was pissed when Joel died so early in TLoU 2 that i stopped playing for a weeks cuz i hated it. But i came back and finished the game afew times and i ended up actually loving it . TLOU is a masterpiece in storytelling and game play. Part 1 AND 2 😘

I work in games development and this all feels very familiar, particularly the part at the end where Neil Druckmann is a no show at a review. Story of my life.
Gotta disagree with Troy when he said he thought the ending to Part 1 would piss people off. I think the consensus was the ending to Part 1 was fantastic. It sparked debate and had people feeling conflicted but that's what was great about it.
That’s not what was said - he’s talking about the character in the game. He’s pissed a lot of people off, as in the character Joel did by carrying out his final act in the hospital in Part 1. Basically he made a lot of enemies, so it makes sense he couldn’t survive in Part 2. Watch it again.
It’s so hard not to cry each time i watch this scene. Even watching behind the scenes makes it very hard! This scene including the whole series is done with perfection. It broke everyone’s heart.
I've played through this game 3 times and then watching the behind the scenes of this playing out for a 4th time... Man, it just doesn't get any easier, I cry like a little bitch Everytime
I wonder at what point does art become senseless misery. Everyone shooting that looked miserable, everyone playing it was miserable. I guess the questions then becomes what is art meant to be and what should it invoke?
This is a good comment. It's like hey guys yeah congrats on making everyone feel confused and like shit after you get to the end of this suckah. Everyone I know who has played it felt the same way at the end. Confused and kinda shitty. Lol
I like it when art pushes boundaries and doesn't play it safe. Last of Us 2's story made me feel miserable by the end, but that also made it one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences I've ever had. The fact that people are still talking about it now, shows how impactful this game is.
I didn’t think the last of us 2 was a miserable play. I mean it just depends on your type of gaming experience do you like games that always have happy endings or do you want raw and real stories (as real as a apocalypse can get) to invoke an experience that is both thought provoking and memorable? Both games I will forever cherish as much as I hated watching Joel die and having to play as Abby it sparks the debate about perspective and how no one is a good guy or a bad guy but just people that are doing what they know to survive in the middle of an apocalypse.
I think this game was a work of art, they knew what they were doing. No other game did something like it before, they pushed the limits. They didn’t want everyone to be sad, they wanted them to be angry and intense. Then over time build the sadness, and understanding. The people who don’t get over the anger are the ones who hate the game, the ones who understand are the ones that gave it game of the year.
2:17 yeah, they really didn’t do enough at this point to empathize with Abby’s character and that’s why his death pissed so many people and all of them then hated Abby and didn’t want to plasy as her.
Even if they got you to play Abby's character 1st, I still think everyone would have hated her when Joel died. We all had a STRONG bond with Joel, so an 2 extra hours, or more Abby cuddling wouldn't have helped much, I don't think.
I think killing him off before really understanding Abby was the best move. Imagine if they built her story up from the start? That would leave the death with such a sour taste. Not knowing her, then seeing her kill your favorite character brought every emotion you could bring. Slowly taming it overtime with Ellie was a good direction. By the time you’re done with the entirety of Abby’s story you see both sides, the anger is gone, leading to the very end and you just feel empty. Which was exactly what they wanted, and depending on how they go with the 3rd part, could be an amazing stepping stone.
There's something really harrowing about watching the mocap for this scene compared to the live game. Sent chills through me watching Ashley scream like that.
even though I have problems with this game joel dying isn’t one of them. It makes sense that this would happen and they did it spectacularly. I cried my eyes out so hard when this happened, and I wish the rest of the game showed this much emotion and depth
So Troy was the first one to spark the idea? I had no idea these last few years until just now. I always thought it was just Neil’s idea for the story. After seeing this, now I’m starting to think a lot more about the story of the sequel. It is very heartbreaking. But for so long, everyone including myself thought that he killed off Joel on purpose to upset everyone. But I guess now, I can see that they were both trying to be realistic about the future outcomes in reality by putting that in the sequel. I knew it of course that not everyone gets a happy ending in that world and sooner or later, karma happens. it still broke my heart though. But now, I think I finally came to peace with part II. Still sad to relive any time I played the game, but now I understand a lot more than I ever did. Sucks not many people will, but I do. Now I pray that there will be a final chapter or at least prequel spinoffs (Joel & Tommy’s survival through 20 years prior and/or even Joel meeting Tess and Bill).
Not gonna lie. So far, it was my favorite scene and couldn't help but laugh. The pure rage in Ellie's face. "I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!" I believe you will, my girl. Let's do this. With Sarah's death, I think the original mocap was better, where he's yelling "NO!!" All I've seen was the mocap because they obviously changed it, but I feel that it very accurately showed the exact point where Joel was broken and it made it so much worse for me.
these games are honestly two of the best games ever made point blank period, the acting, the graphics, the storyline and even the combat content. they did such an amazing job at making you feel so deeply for the characters especially in the second game, even the tiny things such as the dynamics with characters you dont even see for a particularly long time, like ellies interactions with sam in the first game, these games and the people behind them are just so amazing!!
It’s crappy to think that Laura, when shooting this scene, was just as emotional as Ashley and ended up getting hate(I think even death threats too)for her performance as Abbey. It’s not her fault she played a character really well, she was just doing her job. Unfortunately we have toxic gamers out there who can’t distinguish fiction from reality
Just watching this made me bawl my eyes out. This scene in the game broke my heart and I couldn’t play it for 3 months. Ashley and Troy have such a strong connection and you can see that.
people still being so upset about joel dying and how it played out is so unreal. this man spent an outrageous amount of years doing the dirtiest of the dirt and y’all didn’t expect it to come back to bite him in the ass? and if they went the route of joel dying of old age/natural causes, how would that be any more enjoyable than the story we got? his death was a necessary evil to progress with the story in the best way possible
0:42 Never played a last of us game, but I saw many, many scenes from both Games, and & have to say I feel a very high Quality when I see the last of us 1 Scenes.
Played the game recently after bashing the hell out of it when I saw the leaks and even release. I was completely wrong and wish I went into blindly but still is a masterpiece to me
You wanted him to have a heroic death perhaps?? Guns blazing protecting Ellie? Maybe his last breath in her arms?? That would have been some serious Hollywood bullshit!! Did Joel give the doctor a heroic way out?? As much as I loved Joel, and I too cried, but he died the way a real person in a real post apocalyptic world would die. Ugly and without heroics. He deserved it, because of what he'd done. What WE made him do!

No this entire game is Neil ruining Bruce Straleys characters. TLOU was shaped by Bruce Straley and Neil is jealous.
They could have just *not* made a second game and this would still be true.
@@RYOKUBE lmao HEARD? so you're not even sure? gtfo here
What I love so much about Part 2 is how, on 1st playthrough, this game challenged me emotionally, spiritually, physically, and on the stick. Seeing Grounded 2, and how much love, work, and dedication all the Devs put into making this game makes me love Naughty Dog as a studio even more.
i do love how joel saved abby because of the infected, and then apparently walks into some kind of "trap" and then he dies.
its a sad ending but damn,
I played the last of us when it came out.
I hope you are holding on.
You know they are good actors when you already feel emotional behind the scene
If yall didn't know Troy voiced pain in Naruto.
Troy also voiced Joker in Arkham origins
Troy is a legend!👍
And Yamato
He also voiced Joel that barely featured Joel
@@Mr_Sev oh I didn't know that he such a talented actor / voice actor.
The actors in the show will never come close to getting this right
You don’t know that
@@orestiskopanas5796 you are right. Pedro and Dever will knock it out of the park.
hot take i know, but i completely agree. the acting in the game is just untouchable. it's perfect and the shows never gonna capture what this game did
Let’s not jump to conclusions lol
Subtly.
i broke down crying for 10 minutes when I streamed it after my grandpa death
AMAZING WORK PUT NAUGHTY DOG MEN WHAT A ART
Yep i was pissed when Joel died so early in TLoU 2 that i stopped playing for a weeks cuz i hated it. But i came back and finished the game afew times and i ended up actually loving it . TLOU is a masterpiece in storytelling and game play. Part 1 AND 2 😘
Part 2 is horrible. Worst game ever created.
@@negan5986so ALL the acting, gameplay, attention to detail and work put into it is all trash? I dont see How you can think such a thing when the gameplay itself already makes your argument invalid
@@beedawitchIt had a terrible story. None of that contributes much if the story itself was shit
@@suburbiaisnice that doesnt help the argument at all. It might have a shitty story for YOU. But many people have many different tastes about the story. Besides, youre neglecting my First statement by saying that It doesnt contribute to the story without explaining why It wouldnt (btw It does cobtribute, a LOT, If The story is bad for you, It doesnt mean gameplay doesnt help the story being what It is)
@@beedawitch Just because it has good gameplay doesn’t merit it as a good game. The Last Jedi has great visuals and the best cinematography in Star Wars, but it’s the worst one by a large margin. I could give 2 hot shits about the gameplay if the story itself is whack
Ashley johnson is amazing. I knew about her first from the show blindspot. Once i heard ellies voice i had to look it up and realized how many things ive seen that she voiced. An actual acting goddess
I'm really wondering how they gonna pull this scene off in the TV show next season *goosebumps*
Same
I work in games development and this all feels very familiar, particularly the part at the end where Neil Druckmann is a no show at a review. Story of my life.
Gotta disagree with Troy when he said he thought the ending to Part 1 would piss people off. I think the consensus was the ending to Part 1 was fantastic. It sparked debate and had people feeling conflicted but that's what was great about it.
I agree as well, if Joel knocked out Jerry he wouldn’t got killed by Abby.
Dang, the naughty dog developers are menaces but amazing story telling
Makin me tear up just lookin at it being acted out is SINISTER!
I don't remember a scene with such a dramatic charge in a game I've played... intense, as we feel Ellie's pain...
Man Troy’s original performance for Sarah’s death was soooo over the top lmao. I’m glad they got the right take and can look back and laugh at it now
It's crazy how bad it was considering the one they went with might be ny favorite bit of voice acting in a game ever. It's so well done and subtle.
There's something really harrowing about watching the mocap for this scene compared to the live game. Sent chills through me watching Ashley scream like that.
Really liked the documentary.
this was an amazing performance by ashley johnson. absolutely incredible
This part made me feel the most extreme amount of stress and emotion I've ever experienced while playing a videogame.
I am fearing for Kaitlyn Dever’s safety because of this.
She’s going to need some bodyguards when The Last of Us Season 2 airs on HBO.
All the people who are just enjoying the show not actually knowing anything about the games😭
It's funny. Neil wanted to make the audience enraged at Abby, but didn't foresee a lot of that rage being directed at him and his team instead.
I‘ve played this game over 5 times, still can’t do it without crying
even though I have problems with this game joel dying isn’t one of them. It makes sense that this would happen and they did it spectacularly. I cried my eyes out so hard when this happened, and I wish the rest of the game showed this much emotion and depth
It's not depth, it's emotional manipulation, banking on your attachment to the first game
@@mrminecraftcubeable ehat do you think every show ever does?
What are your problems with the game? Just curious.
Imagine Abby crying as she sees Ellie lose her father... and then still taking him away anyway like joel took her father god damn
That wouldve been rlly cool.
Also. Im happy that at least one person gave the game another shot after hating it and found appreciation for it.
Best story game ever! Played it over three times and i keep going back to play the second half more and more because the gameplay and arc is top tier
Its not just gamers, people in general in every fandom/ideology are like that sadly.
Nah people expected joel to die, it's pretty typical for the post apocalyptic genre
But this death was lame
Having us play as Abby was brutal.
Congratulations for the team
That's why this is an experience
0:42 Never played a last of us game, but I saw many, many scenes from both Games, and & have to say I feel a very high Quality when I see the last of us 1 Scenes.
Ive replayed this game 5 times. Still hurts every single time. What a story. Im waiting for 3
Played the game recently after bashing the hell out of it when I saw the leaks and even release. I was completely wrong and wish I went into blindly but still is a masterpiece to me
When I played the bit the first time, I didn't cry. I was in such a shock. Afterwards, I cry everytime.
i’m not against that joel should die…i’m just against how he died.
@@TheDomLouis i don’t want a heroic death ☠️
i want the person who never even trusted an innocent child to not trust a bulky ass women with 11 guards to enter a room with no way to escape that’s fucking stupid
I’m not ready to see this live on the show.. I’ve played these games so many times too … ugh I love them 😭
Most memorable moment in videogame history for me in the +35 years of gaming I had.
Love it or hate it. Unforgettable.
You haven't played anything in your life.... does this seem memorable to you?
I'll never ever get over this... Always so painful...
Ughhh😭💔 I can’t even watch this scene
I remember seeing a video where Neil said Troy wanted to make this scene as quickly as possible to avoid seeing Ashley suffer any furhter, cause it reminded of her own dad that passed away a few years prior..
Laura did such a good job that fanboys hate her in real life, I don’t know about y’all but that’s a damn good actor 👏🏽
Oh man, this game was so legendary, didn't think they could top the first. This game had me on a rollercoaster of emotion.
Man her voice acting is just so amazing in that scene. I literally tear up every time. Wish they would have did a better job with casting in the HBO show.
Aww Laura crying during the scene
