I love how they don't show David's face as Ellie smashes the machete into it. Just shots of her in a blind rage until joel shows up and she starts crying

I mean, I think there is definitely a case to be made for TLOU Part II going out of its way to keep Joel in the wrong regarding Part I's ending.
Part I presents the hospital sequence as *very* morally dubious all around.
The Fireflies are thinking of the "greater good", but what they're doing is underhanded, treacherous and all around despicable. They're trying to murder an unconscious, unwitting child for a cure that may or may not work based on their track record, and when Joel so much as objects they threaten to kill him too.
On Joel's end, he has every right to be angry at the Fireflies, and you get why he's trying to stop them. He loves Ellie and sees her as worthy of keeping alive. But he's choosing to ignore the "greater good", and he betrays Ellie's trust just as much as the Fireflies by lying to her.
Naughty Dog's problem in Part II is glossing over all of that moral ambiguity for the sake of making Joel look worse.
Ignoring how messed up the Fireflies actions were, and putting all the blame on Joel. Not once is the narrative allowed to question them. Not once does Ellie ponder on how Marlene and the others didn't ask her consent on the matter, how they were just going kill her like *that.* And not once is Joel allowed to point any of this out to Ellie.
No, it's all his fault. He's the bad guy, no questions asked. No nuance, no moral greyness. Joel bad, Fireflies good.
Were people paranoid and angry in the leadup to this remake? Yes.
But let's not pretend Naughty Dog's record on handling Joel was spotless.

    • @knowledgeanddefense1054
      @knowledgeanddefense1054 ปีที่แล้ว +46

@@MrImastinker Meanwhile, actual Part II: dedicates an entire segment into showing how great of a dad Joel is
Also, the whole "cute may not have worked" thing is a lie people like you came up to make Joel look better and the proof is that he himself didn't question it and neither did Marlene despite both having personal incentives to keep Ellie alive through reason.
"Not once were the fireflies questioned"-*cut to Owen comparing them to the seraphites and the now dead soldier in that mesuem sequence (the one you like to convinently ignore in order to push a marrative that Part II vilified Joel) writing about the horrors he committed in his service to them on the walls*

    • @MrImastinker
      @MrImastinker ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@knowledgeanddefense1054
I'm not talking about Owen's service and the backstory included.
I'm talking about the Fireflies' actions at the hospital, where they readied to perform a lethal surgery on a child without getting her informed consent, after a history of failed tests.
Her immunity may very well have provided the key to a cure, as per the recordings left behind, but (in my opinion at least) their track record makes it just a little uncertain.
Whatever else the rest of Part II does with Joel, his outings with Ellie or his intervening on her behalf at the dance, my point stands that Part II treats what *he* did at the hospital as flat-out wrong while leaving aside how much the Fireflies were *also* to blame by their betrayal.
Look at how it's framed in Part II. We see the aftermath of Joel rescuing Ellie portrayed as this bloody, nightmarish rampage, and Joel enters the operating room visually framed as this menacing, remorseless killer out for blood.
Even though in Part I, those of us who played the game know that Joel has spent the entire time being hunted down by soldiers ordered to shoot him on sight. And from the start, Marlene had threatened to kill him if he did anything to stop the operation.
Again, the dialogue and framing of Part II emphasizes Joel's ruthlessness at the hospital, while whitewashing why he was so pissed off.
Jerry himself is a character retroactively introduced into the plot, and designed to try and elicit sympathy. But his actions and self-righteous justifications make him, in my opinion, far *less* sympathetic.
All these plot points in Part I considered, would it really have been so bad for Part II to present a real argument on the subject? Have Joel tell Ellie *everything?* Stubborn and dogged as he is, I think it would have been more in character for him to dig his heels in, as opposed to just wilting and leaving out some pretty key details.
And on Ellie's side of things, she says in Part II that she would have been okay with it but the fact remains that Marlene, Jerry and friends *didn't ask her.* They just went ahead with the procedure.
Worse, Ellie was unconscious in the first place because she'd almost drowned. The Fireflies were going to let her last conscious thoughts be fear, pain, and desperation.
That's... really fucked up. And Part II doesn't take that into consideration. Instead, Ellie is written to direct *all* of her anger at Joel.
All in all, Part II just feels so... contrived, and disingenuous at times. Like, I get what Naughty Dog was trying to do, I get the story they wanted to tell.
I just don't think it worked.

By not having Joel be the one to stop Ellie in the show, they ruined the most emotional scene of the game. It's not the same having him comfort her long after she killed David, when they're already outside of the burning building, out of danger, and she has already mostly calmed herself down. In the show Joel doesn't even know what he's comforting Ellie for, as he didn't just witnessed a man try to rape her before she brutally murdered him and maimed his corps. All Joel in the show saw was Ellie stumbling out of a burning building.

The show let Ellie stab him until she had gotten all her anger out and was comfortable enough to stop, she goes out right after and I don’t think there’s much time for her to process between the two scenes and Joel not knowing what happened but seeing that she’s scared and traumatized was enough for him to hold her and tell her it’s gonna be alright. I couldn’t agree more with this comment! Removed ALL the tension and emotion from the scene for me, just felt SO off compared to the game even though it’s double the amount of stabs. When 11 feels MORE brutal and emotional than 22, you’ve edited / changed the scene for the worse. SHOULD’VE went with the 22 stabs, THE had Joel pull her off and continue the scene like it was in the game down to the guitar riff and the camera pan to the machete handle

With David we don't. We don't know what he can do or much about him. He's an evil force that leaves much to the imagination. Makes the whole thing much more scary. I can't fully explain it, but I think the game handled the scene better than the show. The reunion between Ellie and Joel in the show felt kinda lacking. I wish Joel had been in the burning cabin to stop Ellie's ruthless stabs, and Ellie's fearful lashing out only to realize it was him, then to start crying and whimper, "He tried to--" as Joel comforts her, was way more powerful in the game than Ellie just walking out of the cabin and being found by Joel seemingly by coincidence. I'd understand if they changed it because they thought it wasn't realistic to have the two characters temporarily stay in a burning building talking to each other and potentially inhaling the fumes and smoke, but it just seemed to me like they had Ellie walk out by herself to make her seem stronger, like she doesn't need Joel to stop her or something? I don't know. I could be wrong.
I also wish we could have seen Joel noticing the restaurant going up in flames while in the blizzard. I also liked the night-ish setting in the game, as the shot of the flames from the burning restaurant among the thick wind and snow as Joel approached the scene was great. I also kinda missed the chase scene with Ellie killing the guys pursuing her, but I think it makes sense that they cut the chase sequence as it would have made the episode go on longer, so they needed to condense it.
In general, Ellie in the show has just felt (for the most part) not as vulnerable as she is in the game to me. I don't know if its the acting or the script or the directing. That said, Bella Ramsey does have her moments and she was great in this episode. I just think she was better in Game of Thrones.

I agree, I feel like they made Ellie already independent and more snarky than in the game, I was hoping Joel was gonna see the building and go for it not just randomly find her outside even making a sound. I think there is legitimate subtext in the Last of Us which suggests that David would have s**ually a*saulted Ellie in this scene. (I'm putting stars there because I don't see anyone in the comments talking about this even though it seems like a plausible possibility + TH-cam is known for censoring certain triggering words.)
When David talks to Ellie after capturing her (when she's in the cage, not in this scene), he doesn't just come across as creepy. He comes across as attempting to groom her.
Ellie wakes up locked in a cage and sees one of David's friends chop a person to pieces and prepare their meat for consumption. Then (as if playing good cop), David comes in and softly speaks with her. He gives her food, says she's special, + holds her hand.
Through doing this, David's subtext to Ellie is "If you want to survive, you'll have to become mine" (That's the least disgusting way I could think of wording that, sorry). This is further reinforced by what David actually says in their conversation. He states that his group will do what it takes to survive + HE KNOWS that she is capable of doing that too.
Of course Ellie breaks his finger, but a different girl scared out of her mind + focused on survival might have taken that unspoken manipulative offer.
    Okay, back to this video.
In a vacuum, holding someone down and saying "you can try begging" + "you have no idea what I am capable of" is a pretty big indicator that an SA might happen. To me this added context makes it almost certain.
In the cage, David tried to manipulate Ellie into doing what he wanted. Since he couldn't do that, he's decided to just take what he wants. These aren't all of his intentions with Ellie, he likely would also kill her brutally or leave her to burn the fire (Jesus Christ this gets darker the more I think about it).
Now I have a few ideas as to why this isn't more explicitly stated in the game
    1.
"Show not tell" provides a better experience for the audience. I cobbled together all of this evidence to support my reading, but during my first play through, I subconsciously pieced together David's intentions + felt absolute horror wash over me in this scene.
I mashed triangle more desperately than I had done at any other part of the game.
The feelings I experienced from this scene were incredibly intense, and I don't know if I would have felt the same if those SA-ey pieces of dialogue weren't given in that exact moment.
    2.
The Last of Us is a masterpiece, but it's also a third person shooter video game about a zombie apocalypse. I know the box says M for Mature, but Naughty Dog knew 10 years olds were going to play this (hell I was only 14 when it came out). Being more explicit could have lead to kids having some uncomfortable conversations with their parents, possibly leading to press backlash, and even The Last of Us being labeled as "the SA game". Providing subtext of attempted grooming + SA makes this possibility less likely.
Another point showing that this is a wholly different type of violence is her reaction.
Ellie is not inexperiened when it comes to life or death situations. After she first leaves Boston with Joel, soldiers immediately try to murder her. When the soldiers are killed inches from her face she's shocked (saying "I thought we'd just hold them up or something!") but pretty quickly bounces back to her usual self.
When she first has to kill someone to save Joel, she's shocked (stating "I really shot the hell out of him, huh?") but bounces back to her usual self after an argument.
A whole season after her encounter with David, it's clear her demeanor has changed.
Joel can try cheering her up by excitedly pointing out their surroundings like she usually does, but it's no use. She's muted and dazed, like her love of life and innocence has been sucked out of her body.
    and it's FUCKING heartbreaking
The game even makes you stop a click time event so you HAVE to notice her change in behavior.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to (and also dreading) how they do this scene in the HBO show. Judging by how good the first episode was, I'm sure they'll make me feel as intensely as I did when I played it.

    • @kalesushey
      @kalesushey ปีที่แล้ว

Wow, you've reached the same point few people have. And precisely, David by far is a psychopath and cannibal. Very well deduced your comment, in the story they leave something confusing about the intentions from David, because as you mention, a lot of kids would play this game. But of course it is evident that David was in sheep's clothing with Ellie, who is no fool. But it is curious to think that another frightened girl, she would succumb to her desires of him; he wanted to do what we know with her, and then disappear her in a worse way, to later be Food. How creepy, not even the clickers have been as creepy as this character.

this is one of the biggest turning points for both characters. Joel starts to view Ellie as his own blood. While Ellie loses a modicum of her innocence. This results in both of these characters purposes conflicting. Joel needs Ellie in his life to fill his empty heart while, Ellie needs the vaccine to exist for humanity to come back again after her horrible experience with David. The thought that a creepy, old and decrepit man could cause both of these characters to change so much.

And then there's the whole thing about how they changed the doctor in the surgery room from black to white all to fit the story of Part 2.
