When times get really tough, I fear stuff like this more than any zombie, demon, or supernatural mumbo jumbo. There’s not much that exists more scary than a desperate but capable human.
The movie The Road depicts how bleak and soul crushing the reality of a situation like that would be, the scene where they kept people naked and alive in a hole in the group cutting parts of them off one by one, terrifying
Couldn’t agree more, what humans are capable of in reality is much more frightening than anything that can be conjured in fiction because it can actually happen.
never made sense why they would resort to eating humans rather than growing food or even hunting. Its not like they aren't able to go outside anymore, and in a situation where most humans are dead, animal populations would have exploded through the roof by this point unless they were also getting wiped out by the fungus in massive numbers.
David does say that it's hard to grow crops and it's difficult for them to find game. I guess that their best hunters were taken by infected or accidents or illnesses, and when raiders pushed them into an area with such a harsh climate, they weren't able to find more people with hunting skills nor to grow any kind of vegetable.
The only way people used to be able to live like that was by being nomadic. Except you can't exactly be nomadic in a world with a zombie fungus. Things like deer populations rising, would also mean predator populations rise. That then leads to predator populations crashing again after they eat up all the food. Prosperity is not permanent.
I think this is actually an improvement to David, in the game the Cannibalism is so downplayed its almost pointless (other then giving you a self justified reason to kill him and his men) and they leaned too quickly into him creeping on Eli that it just turned him into a mustache twirling villain on a dime, having him be someone who was conflicted with murder even before the outbreak and now having to responsible for others I think really strengthens his character
