20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S.
One of the best "zombie outbreak" sequences I've ever seen, the camera moviments really show you the chaos of the situation and the despair, masterpiece.
Don’t forget the walking dead, it’s outbreak scenes are pretty intense
@@SolaireKnightusnah
The camera in the series copies the camera in the game. Those who shot the film did not add too much of themselves, as many do when adapting games. Therefore, this series came out complete and of high quality. In some places it’s like in the game, in others it’s better.
@@SolaireKnightusTWD doesn’t show the outbreak. Only recently they showed it on Daryl Dixon. A show trying to copy the last of us lmao.
@@Hardrive2677 you clearly didn’t pay attention, there are Ton of scenes throughout the show that show the outbreak happening
I love the 2003 setting making it more confusing and chaotic for the characters without social media and the post-9/11 paranoia when Sarah asks if the sickness is from terrorists
Is the initial outbreak actually taking place in 2003? Didn’t know that
@@GHx5in the show, in the game the outbreak takes place in 2013
I think they made that decision to make it take place closer to present day but it worked in their favor in that regard, huh. I think there's an iPhone at the beginning of the game if I remember right.
@@rossbooth4635 probably a Sony phone
Oh yeah, because f****g social media would calm things right down. Post-truth hysteria here to save the day.
3:17 where Boeing plane flying escape and 2 of them follow from behind had me goosebumps. showing how much intense and getting worse chaos outbreak going to be
It was also likely they were low on fuel and denied the ability to land in the area, so they were racing to a new airport to land while being ready to crashland if nessecary.
@@unusualusername8847but also that they have infected on the plane too.
@@awaspthatswatchingyou4559the plane that crashes defiantly was carrying infected, the cockpit likely was breached & ultimately the aircraft had no one aboard alive.
@@Mrmightyclash if the infection was in grains and the pilots had something with grains while flying and or the night before then I believe yes, but I know for sure a pilot would not open the cockpit door especially in a crisis like that, could have been the pilot or co pilot or even the First officer if someone attacked the pilots then their fate was sealed as soon as everyone boarded that plane.
@@Mrmightyclash in 2003 its very unlikely the cockpit got breached, most definitely someone inside the cockpit

I love how the position of the camera and the way it moves around makes you feel like you are in a video game. Even some of the lighting and dialogue makes it feel even realer and yes I know this was adapted to screen from a video game. Terrific first season can’t wait for Season 2.
What's also great is the whole sequence is very close to how it plays out in the game, including the camera inside the car the whole time and much of the various events going on outside.
With unreal engine 5 graphics
Well it was based on the videogame after all, and many might not like season 2 if theres gona be one because from how they made the history from the second game
I don’t think there was some plane crash in the video game source material.
@@rafaelarcas942 That was the only main deviation aside some smaller ones. It wouldn't be interesting for gaming fans if they haven't tried atleast something different.
That guy's "no no no no!" is so brutally painful to hear. The desperation. Gut wrenching and true to life.
That harsh moment of an everyone-for-themselves situation. It’s heartbreaking
There’s too many variables at play to risk it, thus no time to think the situation out, thus the quick decision to abandon them to their fate.
Honestly, he probably had the best chance at surviving by being left on the side of the road. Middle of nowhere is better than anywhere other people are because people mean infected.
It reminds me of the Korean film, peninsula
Have they had taken them, they would’ve not likely make it when the truck flipped upside down from the plane crash, probably a much better chance of surviving being left out there in middle of nowhere away from everyone.
@@Ghoulstards
With no food or water? No shelter? They are still surrounded by people, no matter where they go. It’s not like they were out in the countryside. They were on a street leading to the highway. They’re dead, unless someone stops to help them.
I love how faithful this is to the original game intro. It captures that same immersive feeling of being in the car with the characters, truly sharing their experience.
The only difference is the planes, both the the ones frantically departing, and the crash at the end there - in the original sequence, the truck is destroyed by a conventional car crash. Of all the things to change, it's a pretty solid choice, since it keeps even game veterans guessing and also heightens the drama of the moment.
the planes are fucking awesome and terrifying, i love how you can instantly tell that the pilots are just using the fact they have them to escape
They even duped us, a car almost crashed into them earlier in the scene
This story was so faithful! Sarah Miller was able to become her authentic self by becoming black. The only difference is the plane.
@@vr2970 Yushiro Yamazaki you will never be a chad
Fuck faithfully to original material
I don't want to imagine how bad things must be at the city airport for those planes to risk taking off almost nose-to-tail. Only a crazy or desperate pilot would try that. And the story of the one that crashed........ well, the crash was probably a mercy for the people on board if what I think happened is correct.
Especially that ERJ-sized craft directly behind a 757/767. Air turbulence wake, alone, could knock that EMB-135 out of the sky.
@@sammencia7945 Like I said, they must have been truly desperate.
but if i remember correctly, the plane that crashed didn't take off at that moment, but they were trying to land and it could be that the infected broke in the cockpit and were eating the pilots so the plane went nose up and then lost control. Could be wrong tho im just assuming that was it in this scene
The Walking Dead did a short segment about a plane in flight when the apocalypse strikes, you can find it on TH-cam. While not exactly the same, a similar story to that probably played out on the plane crashing in this scene
@@SuperFatossNot really considering this takes place after 9/11 the infected didn't break in but that is a Boeing 727 from the looks of it which carries 3 Crew inside the cockpit. One of em definitely turned in that moment and began attacking the other. Very likely the F/O or Co-Pilot.
3:30 Just a few seconds later you see a crowd of civilians and infected among them, but how can you differentiate one from the other? I can't even imagine how chaotic and desperate it must have been for those few police officers to deal with the situation in the city.
Edit: In 3:57 we also see one firetruck and ambulance by this point the medical/fire team are dead/infected.
That for me was the biggest problem that the authorities had to face and the reason why the outbreak was not contained in the "violent" way, having to shoot a person without even knowing if they were infected or not, because many of them They are presenting violent symptoms and attitudes, it is stressful and overwhelming. Even more so is knowing that you are also exposed to this strange disease.
I didn't even realize that many of those people are probably infected. There's almost no visual difference and certainly none that you'd notice in the heat of the moment especially with everyone and every *thing* moving rapidly and in a panicked state.
@@nicholaswilliams6475This is why you should avoid crowded areas during this apocalypse
@@nikolsman244the military learned that they only way of stopping this was just shooting everything that moves
Yeah, you can see if you look real closely that some of the people in the crowd are attacking other people. The infected are actively on the hunt
i love that they filmed this almost like the gameplay
Yea it’s amazing
All that was missing was the "No cell phone, no radio, YEAH, we're doin' GREAT"
Even in the game it seems this scene was particularly inspired by war of the worlds where they escape the City while daughter has no idea what's going on.
that's how I knew they were going to do it justice
@@prathapcharan i need more apocalypse media where the main characters are trying to drive out of town with an oblivious child in the backseat while shit hits the fan
Something I love about this scene is that most of the chaos isn't necessarily from the amount of zombies. Across this entire scene you see maybe only a single zombie for every thirty people. What is causing the most chaos is the panic of the uninfected.
Also, you can see that many of the infected - but not yet zombies, have bitemarks near their necks and shoulders, because that is the fastest way for a bite to fully infect a victim. It's wonderful visual storytelling.
Those are not even zombies
@@Chill_Guy1st I feel like the later variations of the infection pretty close to a zombie. I mean I don't think clickers have an alive host under all that mushroom plating.
@@thesundayshow1310 True I think when they first transform on the first stage of infection they are alive maybe on the 2nd part of infection then after I think their insides are eaten up and their brains are consumed
@@thesundayshow1310 In fact yes they do, Cordyceps keeps the host alive, it controls it's movements and when the host actually dies is when it releases the spores, to infect more hosts. So the clickers, the bloaters, all types of infected are still alive bodies. I don't even think the game or the show ever comfirmed whether of not the person was still alive inside (the mind I mean). Because irl cordyceps just controls the host until it gets to a high enough point, makes sure the host doesn't fall from it when it dies, kills it by the making the fungus come out of the head spreading at the same time the spores that will infect other future hosts.
Of course in the game the infection can also be spread with bodily fluids and the host can be kept alive for at least more than 20 years.
@Hungrydinoinyigo yeah, I notice zombies don’t run straight and like a human, they are just all out of wack and somehow they gain speed
The dude at 4:30 getting tackled down by that one infected just before the plane crash must have been the worst thing to happen to him. He was running towards what he saw was safety and freedom only to see the plane coming at him, so he's already got the feeling of fear and dread. Then he gets tackled and mauled to death.
Yup, I was thinking that. It’s also crazy how you see people getting tackled left and right, some pulling infected off people, others running away with bites, absolute chaos.
Such a good way to keep everyone on their toes. People who played the game saw the ambulance and braced, but nothing. The crash was so good.
It's one of the few adaptations where I love the changes as much as the 'canon' content.
Craig and Neil did an incredible job of giving us the important beats unaltered, while adding and changing enough smaller bits that the story felt new and fresh even to people like me who played the games multiple times.
i remember when i first saw the plane crash i was jaw dropped it was so unexpected but so cool at the same time 😭
I never get tired of this scene. Love that the whole sequence does not show even one infected and instead focuses only on chaos. Combined with incredible acting and the soundtrack
PS - My Bad. There are few infected. Great scene nevertheless
You can see some of them in the crowd tackling people and people trying to pull them off. But in this season there is more people than infected
You are not observing correctly.
There are many infected in early stages, visibly attacking people.
@@typicalperson6389yeah aswell as people with bite marks and blood on their cloths when they escape the movie theatre which was probably a blood bath inside
It clearly shows many infected.
There are a LOT of infected through this clip though
What a brilliant show. Placing such a perfectly executed, thrilling scene at the beginning of the pilot episode was a stroke of genius. How anyone could not get hooked immediately after seeing this is beyond me.
Pretty sure everyone got hooked bro. I even bought a PS4 and the game LOL
This is LITERALLY a shot for shot remake of the beginning of the game. It's not "brilliant" it's just more idea stealing because mass media is controlled by nepotism, and writers are hired for their personal connections and not their talent. Plus, they removed most of the scenes of the military killing civilians. So it's also a propaganda piece.
The problem for me was that I played the game first. I thought the TV show was only 10% as good as the game, tbf. This scene was fantastic though.
@@ablebadger4hopefully season 2 they focus more on the fighting..since 2 is pretty much about vengeance and killing
my cousin literally couldn’t watch the rest of the show because it stresses him out so much
The thing that kinda spooked me a little is seeing all the people fleeing covered in blood and bites, realizing they’re already doomed

Since the show takes place in 2003, it's most likely the 9/11 paranoia
it’s 2003 so it’s probably still paranoia of 9/11 2 yrs prior it’s a good small detail
The outbreak is more interesting then the aftermath.
Right??
I want a Last of Us prequel that takes place during the outbreak. Or hell, maybe even different chapters that take place across the 20 years of survival
YES!! This & the opening outbreak in 2004’s Dawn of the Dead are the best, my only gripe is I wanted more!
The basic origin story is always the best part of any series. It’s raw, it’s new, sometimes inventive then we get into the whole grind of survival, or crawling character development then reaching for plot points and story lines to try to keep the interest alive. I’ve watched many pilots and maybe first seasons and just never got past the decline of the story into various tropes and old hacks.
As in many zombie movies, the outbreak is always the most interesting portion of the entire story
This was such a well shot scene. It almost made me feel like I was in the backseat, experiencing things in Sarah's POV
Play the game it’s the same thing
In the game, you actually play from Sarah's POV so I like how they tried to recreate that feeling in the show
It's shot EXACTLY like the game, my brain can't get over it lol like it's almost a 1:1 recreation at some points, they nailed this scene
Yeah that's deliberate. In the original game, you start as Sarah and one of the first parts you are in is the truck and your looking around, watching society crumble around you. It's still one of the best introductions to a videogame ever.
I knew how this show would begin but it still broke my heart to watch.
It's Sarah that gets to me.
No matter how many times I play the game, or watch that scene from the show, I cry.
Hana Hayes and Nico Parker, as well as Troy Baker and Pedro Pascal, did such an amazing job that I get sucked in and it hits me in the gut every time.
I wanted a scene like this in The Walking Dead. Fear The Walking Dead was pretty good, but this scene really satisfied my itch for an outbreak scene like this.
I also enjoy seeing initial outbreak scenes in zombie movies. Other good ones are the beginning of the Dawn of the Dead remake, and the first episode of Black Summer.
@@uponangelwingsBlack summer was so good i love it
According to twd lore, it is almost impossible for an outbreak like what was seen in that scene to occur in the twd universe, needless to say that the outbreak seen in Daryl Dixon has a plot gap.
Watch the "Flight 462" and "Dead in the Water" Webisodes. The first two seasons of Fear also do a pretty great job
My favorite scene from fear the walking dead was definitely when the walkers up on that military area

Another thing is that there were probably families enjoying their night in the neighboring homes. Eating, children sleeping, playing games, doing school work.
Crazy how a normal day can turn into a complete nightmare.
@@CM-eq1tsthat reminds me of that web episode from the walking dead where on day 0 of the outbreak, a woman wakes up from a car crash in a neighborhood and runs around and sees abandoned houses and front yards that were left recently. Most of the houses had activities that were happening such as a barbecue in the front yard that was still cooking with no one there, toys left on the ground, a dog barking in the background, and I think a tv being played in a house. Day 0 and day 1 are definitely the most scariest part of an apocalypse

Small detail at 2:07, I love how the moment they cut across the field other people follow suit. It's that classic herd mentality you see in real life in situations where people are stuck and looking for an alternate way out of something like a traffic jam
I love how also one truck even keeps going TOWARDS the mass of military vehicles they see ahead of them. Probably because in their mind Military = guns = Safety, but we see how that goes for Joel.
The airplane taking off scene is cool as heck
That wtf is delivered perfectly
Wish we could have a show of the outbreak and trying to control it from different perspectives!
i said this when watching the first episode, they could do so much more with the first part of the outbreak for sure! even a perspective of someone on one of them planes! would love to see it, the Govenments/Army perspective
There are only two video games worth of material to pull from so I hope when they have exhausted that they will do just this and create new stories with new characters in the same universe. I'd love to see the breakdown from the perspective of front line soldiers, trying to evacuate civilians, hold quarantines, ordered to kill infected civilians, being overrun and losing contact with command, etc.

Check out the game version this was based on too
Then check out the original videogame! Like all these shows and movies based on videogames, the games were so damn good they turned them into movies and shows! The original game is just as cinematic and stunning.
I always said this would make a fantastic movie or tv series but never actually thought they make one. So grateful. Even better than I expected.
I was worried, because movie/show adaptations of video games are usually garbage.
But it was amazing.
I think it's because people who grew up playing games are now working in Hollywood.
Craig Mazin, the director and showrunner, was a huge fan who had played the games. And that love of the source material and characters shines through.
I so wanna see Jakarta and how chaotic it was during the 25th or 26th. The Jakarta segment made me so invested about other countries
what really makes this superior to how the game handled it is the addition of so many other people trying to do anything to escape alongside the main characters, we see essentially a convoy of cars go offroad when theres nowhere else to go, six planes following eachother probably because there is no ATC to communicate with, people are just vaguely moving together despite not communicating which is so realistic
This goes to show that a video game can be adapted to a movie or show with the correct direction of the creative minds behind the game

Theres a little detail here. In the game.. The reason they crash is because of a speeding car going thru the intersection.
In the series the same almost happens at.. 3:46 .. but in this universe the car stops and the crash happens because of the airplane's debree.
I honestly think they did that deliberately just to mess with the video game fans. Brilliant move if that was the case.
It's an amazing stroke of fate that the infected grain products were being consumed around the same time which caused this massive outbreak all at once. And it's heartening to know that I'd be one of the first to be infected due to how much of a bread lover I am.
As a gluten intolerant person I'd be doomed to try to survive in the apocalypse for years
You are telling me the Virus originated through...moldy bread?
Like seriously 99% of people :/
One of the more underrated freaky moments in this whole sequence is when the other cars immediately pull off the highway and follow Tommy when he goes off road. I've never seen a plane fall out of the sky, but I've definitely had dangerous tailgaters copy every lane change I make.
2:06 one starts, others follow. real. in any country.
Wow...that scene alone would have me hooked on the series.
I think it just has. If the rest of the show is as good as this scene I'm in

They made this scene at the same level of the original. It's perfect.

Isn’t that the car that crashed into them in the game instead of having a plain crash?
@@sevenheavens-gj9qqyes, I believe that’s what op is saying.
In my opinion, what's scariest about this is how everything happened so quickly, people didn't even have time to prepare for what was coming, or even know what it was.
oh man. that neighbor shouting at Joel only to get eaten is brutal
This entire scene gives me chills, the setting, the camera movement, and the part where the you see the planes doing emergency landings was making me feel like if I was there
I'd love to see a scene in season 2 where it's a flashback and they show what it was like on the planes
You could have two pilots looking at each other realising how fucked its become, and they decide it's better to nose dive the plane and crash than to try and survive
The best course of action for them is actually just wait, sit, do absolutely nothing in that grass field 2:08 since the chaos and infected were happening in the populated place, the best way is to fine a place of nothing, and wait there for things to get better. At worst they'd encountered few stranded infected, certainly much better than get stucked amidst the chaos like they did here.
It is worth noting that they had thought the outbreak was confined to their region, as also highlighted by them talking about getting out of town, maybe reach to Mexico.
Waiting it out could have worked, but if they had been correct, and the outbreak was localized, they would have also risked being quarantined in the region and unable to escape, I wager, a la Dead Rising.
@@IKappa-uy6yo It's actually rather selfish to attempt to break out if they think the virus is contained to their region, because they could be carriers of it without be sick yet.

0:10 I wonder what the green light is supposed to be. People from the neighborhood coming out to check what’s going on?

I loved end of the world movies, but this scene is the most chilling I have ever seen. It haunts me, because it seems like a prediction not just a depiction.
The percussion picking up really adds to the tension
When the planes start falling out of the sky that's when you know it's everywhere.
Imagine something like this really happening you wouldn’t believe the panic
I love how they remade this scene. Not only very similar to the game but I thought they actually improved it with the bait and switch of the fake out car crash which led to the panic in the streets and the plane falling from the sky. Such a tense and amazingly shot scene.
I wish they would have shown more of the initial outbreak. Its more thrilling to see how people react to the unknown.
Covid?
That first scene, all dude wanted to do was help his neighbor but he had no idea what was happening 😂
2:09 love the detail of everyone following their lead once they start going across the field. Mob mentality
They did such a good job recreating this scene from the game.
So I rewatched the entire gameplay from the first last of us and I genuinely believe this airplane crash scene was an idea spawned from when Ellie told Joel about her airplane dream when looking at the airplane ad on the bus, in the beginning where they about to enter salt lake city, thoughts anyone?
Yeah, I hope the second season Ellie get to experience that dream since Ellie is experience lot of these 'dreams' more often in Part 2
The unexpecting twist set it apart from the game itself
Whats amazing is this is EXACTLY how the intro goes (pretty much the grandma and the crash occurence is all that is difference but the rest is just like if you were playing the game)
4 years ago there was a fire in the town nearby me. The fire hit fast, and the emgrency services were overwhelmed by it. That Night I saw the road backed up for Miles with cars just like we see here. People were desperately trying to get away from the rapidly spreading flames. I remember how scared was hearing and seeing everything unfold everyone was. Luckily over the next few weeks they got it under control. It was obviously just isolated to that town. But it felt like the end of the world.
Still remember when this was announced and there were the critics. This show was a masterpiece.
Can we just praise the director for actually faithfully filling the video game and making it into this beautiful adaptation. We need more of this, especially now that video games are being appreciated on the big screen.
When Sarah started crying, she knew it was the death of humanity that was happening all around her and she was powerless.
2:05
Love the detail of "hey they going offroad, lets follow them."
Its more that likely the two trucks at the back followed as the one with bed is the only other offroad capable truck.
She did such a great job as his daughter.
This is such a good recreation of that opening sequence
It’s been a year and I still love this episode so much
Dang I haven’t seen this episode since it premiered and I’m still getting goosebumps
One of the BEST Scenes of an outbreak for TV, Way better than fear the walking dead and similar to chernobyl. Really beautifully executed
You gotta give the soundtrack artist credit, the background music really goes with the tension and chaos in the scene. The drumbeat is almost like Sarah's heartbeat, which gets harder and faster as they find their escape plans being cut off over and over again, right up until the plane comes down a few blocks behind them.
This, this is how you start a show.
Not me just realizing that the reason why they’re not sick is because Tommy forgot to bring the pancake mix in the morning!
I loved the look on Tommy’s face when Sarah said “ maybe it’s everywhere” Tommy knows she smart and he was thinking the same thing. Also watch the town part in slo motion when the theater people break out. As the plane is falling down look at the one infected strait open field tackled the one guy behind the truck!
I have to admit this scene is insane. That's some real scary stuff right there.
Zombieland and Last of Us are zombie media that scares me the most because during the outbreak, there wasn't just one source of the outbreak. It's literally one type of food distributed EVERYWHERE. Zombieland had infected beef, but in Last of Us it's literally any flour and grain products, so it is happening Worldwide. Scarier still is that even right now, bread is now to harbour fungi and that is why it gets moldy even if you leave it in a sterilised environment, because the cells were already there, waiting to wake up
3:43 Billy Hargrove escapes from the apocalypse!
Wow, one of the best early days of apocalypse I ever watched. This scene is what I am looking for, especially The Walking Dead, The Last of Us really a promising zombie series.
this scene gave me an emotion ive only ever felt when i first watched The Walking Dead episode 1, and that was 6 years ago.....
Masterpiece opening in the game , masterpiece opening in the show. ONLY THE LAST OF US CAN DO IT ❤️🌿
The more attention you pay to the crowd in chaos, you notice things, if you look closely at 4:34 you can see on one of the sidewalk for a moment what appears to be a family fleeing holding hands.
Recently re-watched LTOF inflight on a KLM flight, interestingly the screen goes blank just before you see the airplane for what I can imagine are obvious reasons!
“Maybe it’s everywhere. Maybe there’s no where to go.” Damn that line gives me chills.
No one here is going to talk about how the music got progressively faster throughout this chaos of a scene?
The game was the best beginning to a zombie apocalypse ever depicted and the series really did well to capture it
I wonder if they can do "Day's gone" in a similar way. Renegade meets the walking dead
Days gone was an amazing game, hope we get to see a show.
I loved this show! The scenes with the dialogue are the cutscenes and the scenes with the action is gameplay.
That small town they film was my hometown Fort Macleod. That’s pretty cool they film that in there
This really recreates the feeling of Panic from the game in the city, I love it I need to watch this show

I never played the game so seeing this all for the first time was like wow! Honestly made me think of spring 2020 when all heck was breaking loose but having to go to the city and there was like no one out
I always appreciated how they filmed this scene, as close to the game as it could be while keeping it a show.
They probably would have gotten away if not for the plane crash.
Más bien, tenían que tomar esas decisiones para que la historia continuara, sería muy aburrido ver a todos lograr sus objetivos, o simplemente morirían eventualmente...
I like all the details happening as they drive, that they're not the only ones trying to figure this out. The other cars following them offroad was a nice touch.
Joel is like... the worst person to have in this situation. Tommy is shell-shocked for sure and that's why these two are getting shit done but he is doing nothing but causing more stress in this situation.
well thats Joel for you....Mr. do as I say not as I do.
Tommy was an ex military and handle the situation quite good
