  • My channel has been blowing up with fellow Alienware Aurora owners asking if you can case swap this PC. I will cover the reasons someone would want to ditch the stock Dell chassis, if you can swap the components out of an Alienware gaming desktop, and most importantly, if you should. I will also explain some fixes for the issues with the stock case without having to do a full case swap and my opinion on the whole topic.

    For all the reasons I hate buying OEM, parts to build my own were impossible to find last year. So I went with the R10 and spec'd it so it'd last me a few years with no interest in upgrading / tinkering with it.
    You bring up some excellent points about exactly why case-swapping on one of these is nightmare-inducing. No thanks. I'd rather just build from scratch.

    It's refreshing whenever I come across Alienware owners that actually know what they're talking about. I bought an discounted R9 with my covidbucks and found that the average Alienware customer is very clueless and Dell seems to use that to rip them off and sell configurations that I don't even think they should be selling.
    With tinkering it's a pretty good computer, but they should do so much better for people who just want a no hassle, prebuilt, gaming PC. At their regular price it's really pretty ridiculous in some of the ways they cheap out on things.

After that I added a 700gig HDD from my moms broken mac book pro. I would like to upgrade the RAM and I didn't know only certain types work. Been trying to learn more about the motherboard. I do run a i7 9700twith water cooling. The R8 was a gift and I want to make the most of it. I recently took the power unit out to clean the fan and it seems once you get it out of that swivel thing it stands alone. This was my first gaming PC and Ive learned a lot. Could be just me, but the PSU looks to have the standard ATX12V mounting screws in the back. I imagine it just needs a case with the compatibility for its length unless dell decided to use a custom height unit in more than one PC.

    I've got the Black version R11 and I've had my motherboard all the way out without encountering any adhesive or being locked out of it. I've also swapped my RAM out for 2x32GB 3200MHz (in XMP, running at 3200MHz) T-Force Dual Channel that I walked into Micro Center and bought. What I've heard regarding RAM is that if you try to do a BIOS update with anything other than the supplied RAM (or other RAM Dell sells), it kicks you out of the update, citing 'unofficial memory'. Nice to know that Cooler Master fans work, I ended up going with Corsair ML120 Pros, 1 in the front slot and 2 more on either side of the stock Alienware by Asetek AIO. I couldn't add another intake fan, as I have a 14TB Seagate Exos in the 3.5" drive bay.

    The PSU is a standard ATX PSU. I am currently using one in a custom build, it required no "fabrication". Just took it out of the R10, put into new PC build. No special tools or skills required, plug and play. If the cables are too short, good quality cable extensions are cheap and easy to find. *Most* of the AW PSUs are 80+ gold rated and decent quality, no reason not ro reuse.
    The motherboard is also not "part of the chassis" or glued in. It's screwed in, and can be removed easily. I do concur with the sentiment about most other AM4 motherboards being better though, and would recommend not using Dells unless you need to. Right now is a great time to get new/used AM4 boards cheaply.

    Hey man! Thanks for all the info. Though I'm pretty sure the 5000 series R10 and the R12 have PCI-E 4.0 x8 lanes on the primary slot (as per Dell's website). The older R10 and R11 max out at PCI-E 3.0 x8.

    • @GamerHeavenOfficial
      @GamerHeavenOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure. So I have heard both, but if Dell is claiming 4.0 on their website that is probably pretty accurate, and would make sense considering it doesn't make a difference for intel 10th gen(R11), but does benefit AMD CPUs(R10) and the 11th gen intel CPU (R12).

I currently have an i5 processor in it not sure on the exact one and a 3060. I would like to upgrade to a 3070 ti at minimum and would like to liquid cool it, as it sits right now it’s just air cooled. Can any cpu/ graphics card and ram be thrown into an r12 or just specific parts?

    Just came home from an overnighter at Best Buy with a brand spanking new 3070 Ti (they only had about five 3070 cards which went immediately so I had to take the Ti version). I needed to upgrade the 1070 that came with the Alienware Aurora R7. Problem? You guest it - its having trouble staying cool in this poorly engineered for airflow case. What airflow there is-is being challenged by an add-in NVME PCI-E board on the bottom and by the PSU mounting hardware on the top. I'm concerned this case is going to cook that new graphics card to death. I see case swapping is a poor option so should I just remove the usable components and get a new case and motherboard?

Most people probably have an older (and cooler running) card lying around and could utilize it in this fairly compact case for crypto mining :)
