  • The idea that you need 10,000 hours to master the interests you love is simply not true. The idea that you are "too old" to pursue, and even make money at the dreams you've had since youth is also not true. James Altucher is an entrepreneur, writer, podcaster, standup comedian, chess master, and has pursued many different careers despite everyone telling him, "You can't do that". In his talk, James gives the techniques he's used to pursue careers and paths he loves. The 100 Experiment Rule. The Plus, Minus Equals technique. How to train your micro-skills. How to exercise the Possibility Muscle. And how to bounce back from the worst failures. In the short life we spend here, we have the tools to follow the path we love and nothing can stop us. James Altucher is an entrepreneur, writer of 25 books (including the best selling "Choose Yourself" which USA Today listed as one of the "ten best business books of all time"). He's the host of the "James Altucher Show" podcast which has had over 70,000,000 downloads and has featured guests such as Richard Branson, Mark Cuban, Sara Blakely, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Gary Kasparov and more. He is also a nationally ranked chess master. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

In truth, this guy is firing about 150 ideas or more during this this Ted Talk. If you find it overwhelming, I suggest you purchase his book “How to Skip the Line.” His last idea is probably the best…don’t waste time doing things you don’t want to do…

Don't do more of the things you hate at the expense of things you love.

*Don't do more of the things you hate at the expense of things you love*
You know that sounds like a pretty generic. Exit one-liner but that's actually kind of Genius thing to close out with even if it had nothing to do with skipping the line

What is the meaning of " the expensse of the things you love" means in the last line - "Don't do more of the things you hate at the expense of the things you love". Can someone explain please?
    TIA

"at the expense" means at the cost of. So he says don't do more of the things you hate at the cost of neglecting the things you love.

A lot of the things he tried didn't seem like "dreams," they seemed like opportunities ex. starting a kick starter to buy greenland, filing the paper work to become a presidential candidate, etc. Also, his theory that if you experiment until something works, you get into this "top 1%"? This guy seems like less of a dreamer and more like an opportunist. Nothing wrong with looking for opprotunities but just be honest. Basically this guy is saying do something you love but be open to trying alternative approaches that present opportunities and once one of them works aka you make a profit, find more opportunities to grow your dreams/business.

He really doesn’t need to articulate anything at this point. But he does via his books that millions have read.
