- Pro-democracy protesters in Thailand have confronted a motorcade carrying members of the royal family as it passed through a rally in Bangkok.
The protesters, who were pushed back by ranks of police, raised the three-finger salute that has become a symbol of the protest movement.
They have called for curbs on the king's powers and for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.
The protests on Wednesday follow months of escalating tension in the country.

But he also funded a lot of money for poor/countryside people under his foundation/ his father's foundation and eventually send supoorts to Southern part of Thailand last year after We got Typhoon before any other officials did.
So, If you didn't came from Thailand, you will never know how much he contributed to the country more than any Government officials did.

Royals are useful things to have. Kind of hard to see that at times admittedly, but having a royal family while a democratically elected representative is still acting as the practical "head" of things (prime minister, president, etc) means that you have a fair democracy, plus the diplomatic heavyweight status and tourism boost that outweighs their "upkeep" cost. Of course if the monarch is *actually* acting as a straight up dictator that's way more of a nope.
@H. A. I'm a millennial from the UK myself. The actual utility, especially of the UK's monarchy with all its prestige, massively outweighs the cost. The UK's royal family have more weight and sway on the world stage than almost any diplomat (and the sheer diplomatic skill of Queen Elizabeth the second is one of the few reasons the UK's still taken at least somewhat seriously on the world stage) and B, the tourism industry and its boost on the economy directly provided by tourists wanting to take a look at all the fancy royal stuff pays for the royal wages and the upkeep of historical cultural monuments several times over.
Let's be real here, no one's coming to the UK for our weather or our beaches. They want to see the palaces, the crown jewels, the royal guard and all the history and traditions that still continue to this day, etc. Might not look like it on the surface, but if you lose all that fluff then the UK, England especially, loses a lot of its tourist appeal.

I lived in thailand and i have learned that under the rule of the dictator you could have even gone silently if you don’t keep your mouth shut or questioning the monarchy but now the people has tolerance to these kind of injustice no longer.

I understand what you are saying but it is highly unlikely the army will split. It would if at all be a joint decision by Monarchy and army to slowly allow democratic reform but even this is not likely as they have clawed back power. There is no sign of Dissent from the kings sister or from big business who would help the democratic movement...so hopefully there will be some reforms but they will likely be slow and little.

I worked with a family who are Thai. They have a lot of respect and admiration for the former king but don't feel as much for his son. They view him as more of a "playboy" enjoying his status rather than a monarch acting on behalf of his country. I've heard his father was well educated and did great things to help the country. It's a shame his son doesn't take the same pride in or motivation to continue Thailand's national and international identity.

Nobody can replace King Rama 9. He was very much loved by everyone and did a remarkable job during his time, he also had big ideas and projects for agriculture, infrastructure, water sources, health & education.
A lot of the royal family work is ongoing and needs the support and work from the Thai people to make Thailand even better for locals and visitors.

Truly, the former king signs to certify the coup d'etat for 11 times but there are many people who still respect him because of good propaganda in the past. I'm thai and I used to be the one of them. Conversely, the new king didn't have a good image since the past. so there are many thai people who like "I'm like the former king but I dont like the new king" which make it harder to remove the monarchy in thailand. Furthermore, the mass media agree with them so everything is harder. English is not my native language but I hope you still understand.😢

Your english is perfect. I dont think any royalty that succeeds late King Bhumibol will be seen worthy of the throne. He was revered because he saw to the welfare of the majority, the poor, by upgrading their knowledge of farming and ways to irrigate their farms etc. The present king hasn't done anything to tarnish the image since his coronation but the old school governance by the military has to be in check. Unfortunately, Thailand has had a long history of military rule (12) but the lastest coup of 2014 was due to political crisis between political parties. So the question is, will a military coup be a way to solve future political crisis? Its accepted in Thai history. The constitution needs to change and who can change this now? If the military sees the way of the people, then only the military can change the constitution, otherwise, a new government which means elections and we know how the last election results were. I do see the plight of the younger generation and lets hope for the best.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej also known as Rama IX. He has initiated literally thousands of development projects that have greatly benefited the country and its people.
The Royal Development Projects (RDPs) were directly inspired by the insight His Majesty gained while visiting rural areas. He realized that any projects that truly improved the lives of the people must go hand in hand with protection of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources.
His Majesty is often associated with life-giving rain because of his pioneering work in cloud seeding techniques. Since 1971, the methods he developed have been used to bring drought relief to farmers and to increase water reservoirs, earning international patents and interest from foreign countries.
To help the farmers of Thailand’s central plains to exploit fully the waters of the Pa Sak River, His Majesty initiated a development project that created a new reservoir for water conservation and controlled irrigation. The dam has also helped with flood prevention on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Combining concepts of water management with local control, His Majesty developed a strategy that promotes individual household reservoirs over large communal ones, maximizing versatility while minimizing costs. Overall agricultural production is boosted without the need for public funds.
All of projects that His Majesty initiated and developed using funds from Chaipattana Foundation. Did not use the national budget.
The world admires his majesty, denominated the great King, King of King.
This is why almost every home, office and public building in Thailand is adorned with portraits of His Majesty and other members of the Royal Family.
