- A manhunt is underway for a prisoner who escaped from a prison van during an ambush by armed men who killed two prison officers and wounded others.
The prisoner on the run, Mohamed Amra, is said to have ties to a gang in the southern city of Marseille, which has been plagued by drug-related gang violence.
Known as "The Fly", Amra was being taken from court to a prison in the city of Rouen near Paris on Tuesday when a car rammed the prison van at a toll booth and armed men opened fire.

They took this prisoner in such a basic van? That's the same van my plumber turns up in. Clearly France are dropping the ball when it comes to security. Also this had to be an inside job. How did they know where to wait for this? Prisoner transports are always confidential for this exact reason. The fact that the white BMW was following behind to block them in while the black Peugeot knew to wait at the toll booth means they knew exactly the time and location of where this prisoner was being taken to.

There hasn't been a mortal attack on prison guard since 1984, and having an armoured vehicle wouldn't have changed anything in this situation, they were encircled and unable to move their vehicle
The fact that this hasn't happened since 50years show that France isn't dropping the ball, the problem is that he shouldn't have been moved, the judge should move to the prison instead of moving the dangerous prisoner to the court
everything is digital these days, it could have been the french prison administration system that deals with prisoner transports simply got hacked and information gained that way, even down to obtaining the gps data on the van involved so they had real time data where exactly the van was at any given time

An armoured vehicle would have had bullet proof glass. If there was at least bullet proofing, the 2 guards in the front of the van may have stood a chance to figure out an exit strategy while getting shot at. If you don't even have bullet proof glass to begin with then you are now seriously injured and trying to get away takes a back seat as you panic to try and protect yourself. Also with armoured vehicles, the extra protection makes them much heavier so it would have been easier to push the Peugeot out of the way due to its mass.
Yes France did drop the ball because none of the vehicles used were adequate for the situation AND the fact that he had known links to drug gangs means the security should have been higher and considered a bigger threat. Prisoners will always try and escape given the opportunity, so that threat should be taken seriously. They should have been travelling at a high rate of speed as most security related convoys do so that if a vehicle was keeping up with them (the white BMW) it would have been easy to spot why an unknown vehicle is chasing the convoy. The toll booth should have had a pass through section for such types of situations, like many others do around the world so they could pass through without slowing down. Just because nobody has died in 50 years isn't an excuse to not be adequately prepared in advance. Prevention is better than cure.
Yes, he probably shouldn't have been moved and they will probably need to address that whole situation but also the fact that they knew everything about the route etc means that there were others involved and security and confidentiality of these movements need to be on greater lockdown.

@@iamthestig1 Basic training in my opinion for a prisoner van driver would be defensive driving. He didn't even attempt to avoid the impact. Most people responsible for driving vehicles at a high risk of being targeted by criminals learn a lot of defensive driving.

@@cowboy104 I have, and as soon as the driver realizes the vehicle is coming towards him he brakes. Which is the reaction of a regular driver to an oncoming vehicle. Defensive/offensive driving taught by police and military in that situation would be to floor it and turn away from the car. There was plenty of room to maneuver, and at least make an attempt to escape, but they didn't even try to avoid the impact. That is a terrible reaction to a vehicle on a collision course with you as a normal driver, let alone one transporting a HVT.

This was considered a low risk transfer. The conviction was 18 months for burglary.

He intentionally was caught trying to escape from his cell so the police WOULD transfer him out of caution. The transfer was also the choke point and where he intended to escape-not trying to saw his way out of a cell.
