  • A student-led protest movement in Thailand is demanding reform of the monarchy - in a country where it's illegal to defame, insult, or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent or regent. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
Thailand's lèse-majesté law, which forbids any insult to the monarchy, is among the strictest in the world.
Over the past five months a student-led protest movement has started demanding reform of the monarchy and an end to military coups, of which Thailand has had twenty in modern times.
The demonstrations sent shockwaves through a country which is taught from birth to revere and love the monarchy and fear the consequences of talking about it.
BBC South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports for Newsnight.

The prime minister has always been a....rough guy, to put it plainly, but do you and your friends remember why he, a soldier, has to be here, in this position?
We live in a country that democracy isn't democratic, at least, not in a practical way. To be a working democratic country, its people need to have a true ability to analyze and synthesize what's really best for them. Many elected prime ministers come and go... some with big chuncks of money that was supposed to be used for the country, some with even bigger chunks money that he couldn't spend them all after years of being exiled and still has enough money to ignite movements to come back to this country.
Believe me, I understand your point of view "Should we respect a man just want to stay in power, no matter what??" but what if....the thing he did, he did for the country... To protect this dumb country from being abused by some wicked family... to push the country forward, like it was supposed to, long time ago while being cursed at, sworn at... he knows and still goes on. I respect the man, I don't like him, but still respect the man. the time will tell, one day you guys might be proud to have a chance studying in the same school as him.

@@Iceyfire12 You know nothing about Thailand. The foot in bhuddist culture is considered to be the lowest and dirtiest part of the body.
When speaking to the king or queen - Thais call themselves ใต้ฝ้าละอองธุลีพระบาท which is translated as Dust under his royal foot.
When speaking to the crowned prince of the royal family - We call ourselves ใต้ฝ่าละอองพระบาท the word “ธุลี” which mean “dust” is taken out. But the word “ละออง” which also means “dust” is still presence. Thus can either be translated as “We are dust under his/her royals foot”.(somewhat a better dust than the first categories).
When speaking to a royal family member(excluding those 1,2 categories). We Thais call ourselves ใต้ฝ่าพระบาท this time the word ละออง(which means dust) is taken out. Thus can be translated as “We are under his/her royal foot”.
The last one. When we are speaking to a non-royal family aristocrat. We Thai call our selve ใต้เท่า which can be translated as “We are under his/her non-royal foot”.
These 4 nouns are taught to every Thai when we are 9-10 years old so its not surprise we are angry to think it happened.
Now you’ll understand everything when a Thai protester say something like “we will no longer be under his foot”.

Being a 'half Thai, half British' person living in the UK it always confused me as to why it's a prison sentence just for saying something 'negative' about the King and his Royal family. I used to ask my mother, what if he did something REALLY bad? She didn't like those conversations. I'd also ask about what they actually did for the country, not a lot it seems. I also found it unbelievable how the poorest people would literally give their last 'penny' in donation to the Royal family as if they were some kind of 'wishing well', even though they are the wealthiest monarchy in the whole world. Baffling.

If anything, monarchism leads to extremism. That's why we have protests in Thailand, that's why we had Russian revolution. These nations were divided by the extremism that monarchism creates, the people who despise the monarch and the people who love the monarch and this happens in countries where monarch has power. If a monarch is there only symbolically and the government is run democratically, there won't be clashes between the monarchists and those who oppose the monarch. I can't think of one example where monarch having power would decrease extremism. Sure, the monarch can impose ridiculous laws to cease riots and so on, but is that to you a good solution?

One of the shittiest parts about the effects of this call for reformation of the constitution is the split between the older generations and millennials. You wouldn’t believe the damages it has caused between families, most of the parents are sadly still attached to the older norms and refuses to believe that the kids are doing this for nothing but the better future we need and there is no organization pulling strings behind this. We just want better lives, the simplest fact they won't get. How sad af is this? Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

As someone from Nepal, a nation which recently abolished monarchy, I just felt like giving my views on this. If the Thai people are not happy with the deeds of their royals, it is of utmost importance to improve their royals, reduce their executive power, and so on, but abolishing monarchy is not a good solution at all !! In Nepal, the lifestyle of royals were not that lavish to criticize as of Thai, but the first catastrophe was the Royal massacre in which the beloved royal family was murdered, and the king's brother was made the new king. As none of the new king's family was dead (though the new queen was severely wounded),people suspected he was behind it. As the government wasn't able to conduct the elections for a long time because of the civil war, the king dismissed the government, and made a cabinet of ministers on his leadership. He assured that he would reinstate democracy after the civil war, and elections were over, but people started to strike. Eventually, without harming more people, he just stepped down in 19 days. The following days marked with excessive outer interference in the constitution making process, ethnic, and geographic hatred, large Corruption scandals, constant attacks against the Nepali culture via several bills, biased role of the President, and so on. This has caused huge unrest in Nepal nowadays, and Nepalese are at the moment, again asking for monarchy, and Hindu nation !

    • @carey579
      @carey579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Therefore, I accuse the king, the government, the ruling parties and, last but not least, the military for violent repression against activists.
Even the Thai people who love tradition should understand that the majority of pro-democracy activists are not against the monarchy in itself, but instead demand to democratically reform it.

Something the west can either find annoying or actually different.
They won’t make a handicapped in a wheelchair to stand up. Honestly I sleep before the movie starts and wake up in the first 5 minutes nothing happened and of course I didn’t stand lol. BBC loves criticizing the Thailand because they love to gossip and bad mouth their monarchy! They can’t stand that it’s one of our laws and a simple one! Thai people can live their every day life without even mentioning the monarchy but these protestors make it seem like they are the normal ones when they are obsessed about bad mouthing the monarchy on a daily basis for the rest of their lives LoL!!!!

Just so you know. Thai mainstream press didn’t show us this entirely content and only praise that royalist who mentioned the queen. They skipped the part you told him “people in UK don’t have to be afraid of getting caught in order to say almost anything to the queen” They skipped that part!!!!!
