  • After the styling work in part 1 of this series, I think both Scott and I had our doubts if this bonsai will ever look good!
A new day brings more challenges and then at the end of day 2, our work is complete. Let us know what you think of the tree in the comment section!
Check out the "Scott Winnard, Let's Do Bonsai" channel on TH-cam here....

You know what? It's great! I was following along, and really struggling to see where it was going. Then you both brought out something that wasn't apparent at all with the final design. Right down to the subtle change to the front, everything just clicked.
Great pair of videos. Worked really well for both the results, and your interactions.

  • @rachelwebber3605

Those aerial-like roots are actually fairly common in the west, due to trees growing on nurse logs. You can end up with some amazing old growth trees that are up on their "toes" due to being nursed from a fallen old growth log! I've walked under such trees before, and it's pretty awesome! Also, that curled root reminds me a lot of an old growth burl. I can almost see tiny ferns and huckleberries growing on it!

      Yes, Nigel, it was entertaining.
I would have cut back almost everything aswell, made the actual straight growing part dead wood, and turned the big fat rectangular branch into the new apex, which would give the tree another anomaly - also I would have kept the roots that you cut off to make the tree look like it survived a landslide. More anomalies adding up to make it interesting seems to work better than trying to hide one dominant anomaly.
But your result is also ok I guess.

As I promised in the comment section of part 1 of this series here's my opinion about the videos and the tree.

I had a lot of fun with your jokes and innuendo. Nonetheless you were able to tell your thoughts about why you did this and didn't that. Simply said you're a dream team of bonsai videos!

"We're not going to remove many roots." ... Proceeds to saw off half the rootball straight away... But you wanted a beatdown barely surviving tree, I think that was achieved nicely :)
I had an idea of doing something similar to one of the trees I have, it was beaten down not by me but by nature itself (collected tree), but once it sprouted all kinds of branches I didn't have the heart to beat it down again, now it's looking pretty lush again :)That makes me appreciate this video even more, because it's something I don't have (and probably never will). Great one!
I can't wait to see how this develops and what the next styling will make out of it since hopefully you'll have more suitable branches to work with :)

@@TheBonsaiZone It's a really nice project, to have a collaboration on your channel with a fellow bonsai enthusiast. I'm hoping you'll develop the tree together, I think it's a good thing to once in a while discuss some styling of a tree with someone else. They might give you a perspective you might not think of yourself. I use my bf for that, even though he isn't really into bonsai (except if it's a fruiting tree, he wants some of those goodies to eat :) ), some of his remarks just pop new ideas into my head.
I hope it'll survive the winter though with so many roots gone, but you have a basement to put them in, so I'm confident it'll be alright and really hope to see the tree and both of you again next year :)

You could drape wet moss over the branches to make it look like it's covered in vines. Maybe also some other smaller plants or trees to make it look like it's emerging from a dense jungle

    Hai Nigel and Scott,
What a great video.... and what a lovely tree at last.
But I would cut these remaining jins as soon as possible. These two spears do nothing for the tree or it's future.
    Best Regards, Martin

Nice truck! Good decisions about it. Was that a falcon in your yard? Reminds me of the ospreys we see here in s. FL. Really like what you have done with this tree. Looks good with its placement in the pot. How long do you believe it will take it to recover?

    • @TheBonsaiZone

Thank you Pat, that was a Cooper's hawk taking a nice sun bath! They are know as a chicken hawk, but they prefer to eat rodents. The tree is on the floor of the greenhouse where it is cool, but humid and out of the direct sun. It should recover quickly and I would expect a bit of new growth before winter. I will protect it well in the basement over the winter when the temperature starts to get below freezing.

Nice work on the tree. It could pass as a beaten down little tree however I think the jins are too perfect and should look more torn and ragged. Just my opinion.

I would have waited to do a re-pot until spring after such an aggressive "pruning". Maybe even put it into a larger 5 gallon fabric grow bag or crate with added soil. That would allow quicker regrowth. It will be interesting to see what happens to it with your approach.

Good morning Nigel! I have a question regarding chopping a trunk. When is the best time of year to be doing this? Loving the channel as always!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like to chop back my hardy trees in late fall after the leaves have dropped. It gives the tree time to seal the wound before the sap begins to flow in spring. Tropical trees are best done mid summer after you let the tree grow wild for about a year. The tree should recover quickly in the warm summer weather.

I think a nice addition to a playlist would be to add in the description when a tree has died/you gave it away/sold it :)
