    I'm an Egyptian, living in India from the last five years. Here in India, this tree is called Peepal Tree and is considered as sacred and is worshipped by Hindus. It grows so fast and possibly in every condition and places like small cracks in buildings, bridges, roads and any abandoned place making it big with survival tenures for thousands of years!

    Nigel you don't need to keep leveling the post. Just nail two 2x4's at an angle on perpendicular sides supporting into the ground. Level and nail the bottoms to wood stakes (whatever scrap wood you have that you can shove in the ground a decent ways). Now it stays level while working and drying. If you really want to nail out some holes and pours, rent an auger and a mixer from home depot. You could get all your posts done in a weekend. If you dont want to get the auger, still highly recommend the mixer. So so much easier, right consistency. And it's inexpensive to rent.

      Also mixing outside the hole will get him a more consistent mix and you can check your water and all. Then just pour and get air out with the pole.

      I've decided to integrate the Walnut tree into the greenhouse, I may regret that decision, but I'll try! The Ficus religiosa seems to be responding well to re potting, it's already starting to grow new leaves!

    Looking at compare an contrast choices with ficus roots; pot more often and get more opportunities to improve root appearance ( bifercation) or pot less often to promote thicker roots to help tree scale for the trunk?.. asking for a friend lol...

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to pot every two to three years with the Ficus. It allows for good growth of the tree and roots, but is often enough to keep the roots from getting too wild and out of balance.

    You made a comment about chopping the trunk off and starting over with the roots. I don't know iif that would work with a fig or not but I have seen it done quite successfully with willows. they root easily.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would work I'm sure, but I'd be starting all over with the roots. I'd rather build on the root base that I have. Creating a new one would weaken the tree for many years until the roots caught up with the top growth.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The front may change in the future, but I'll see how the roots develop. I'm hoping that I get aerial roots some day and roots forming from the trunk. These new roots might completely cover the old root system and change the look of the root base.

    Hi Nigel, I have a ficus Benjamina which is my first bonsai tree. I started it back in 2015. I’ve learned watching your videos and I’ve used this tree to experiment and learn. I have a first branch that’s about 1/4” thick near the trunk and it thins out at the tip. It has about 4 leaves at the end. Question is how can I get this branch to back bud. It seems like leaves only grow on the end. The rest of the tree has good growth. Would love this branch to back bud so I can develop secondary branches.
    Any suggestions?? Sorry for the long explanation. Always appreciate your advice. Thank you

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ficus benjamina can be difficult to get it to back bud. You can cut ab incision in the branch, this will disrupt the flow of sap and you may get a branch emerge behind the incision point. You can also graft a cutting from the same tree to the branch using an approach graft. The other option is to let the branch grow with vigor and then cut it back hard, hopefully it will grow new shoots from the end!

      @frankpagan1294 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      Trimming the leaves is good if you want to see the structure of the tree clearly for pruning. It does take vigor out of the tree, so it should only be done on a strong healthy tree. The only other reason I would trim off the leaves is to prepare the tree for a show. The new leaves will grow back in smaller then the original ones. You can also do some selective leaf removal if a leaf is over shadowing a bud that you want to develop down below. I find I'm always doing a bit of selective thinning just to get light to all of the branches.
