- My Asparagus fern bonsai has grown like crazy and needs a haircut for the KW bonsai show!
I'm also preparing another unusual species for the show, my Yucca bonsai forest.

Oh Nigel, I just adore you. I like seeing you showing of little bits of your life outside of bonsai -the raspberries, spider, the larvae/chickens, the frog and squirrel. It is lovely to see how connected to you are to nature.
It just came to me.. The "trunk" on your asparagus fern looks like old ancient ficus trees you would see in southern Asia that have their aerial roots literally covering the whole main trunk!
I love the fern, it seems to look better every year

That fern is really neat! I love that you are gentle with the critters. Most evict spiders with a lot of screaming, stomping and looking for a flamethrower... Haha! Well, we had a frost here. Had ice on the windshield in the morning couple days ago. Poplar trees are now changing colour. Summer went so fast. I was thinking of trying to do a Bonsai with a Geranium, as it grows quickly, you can get cultivars with small leaves. It will distract me from over pruning my other trees over winter. I may get a lay off this year from work.
Trees are looking very beautiful.I tried asparagus bonsai last year after watching your video.Im still unable to understand why it failed.While other plants are doing fine on big pots!

As someone who lives by the beach where yuccas grow -- well done! Looks perfect!
With the rosemary, the yucca forest looks like a Mediterranean beach scene. Rosemary comes from that area and grows wild along the seaside, and the yucca looks like some of the palm trees that grow there. If you want to get rid of the algae on the skull, you could soak it overnight in bleach. I've done that with aquarium rocks and decorations that had gone green. Soak it only long enough to get it white again, rinse it off, then soak it in aquarium dechlorinizer to keep the bleach from damaging the skull.

I know you wanted to try a lush, ‘cousin It’ look for your Asparagus tree, but I guess your tried and true compact canopy style is the one that’s most suitable for showing. ~ As someone who lives in an area with giant yucca trees as common garden plants, I have to say that I’m pretty amazed by how mature and tree-like the two largest trunks are getting, with the furrowing in the bark and the elephantine bases. Possible injury is one of the reasons yuccas are nick -named ‘Spanish Dagger ‘ ! ~ An idea to consider for future display purposes; maybe try a mixture of very dark sand and dark to medium small gravel for landscaping this forest. Not all deserts have light colored soil. ~ If you need photos of yuccas, just let me know. I imagine you’ve already found plenty online. ~ Do you ever leaf shine some of your plants for shows? Yuccas, Ficus and many others can be buffed with a terry cloth towel, to make them shine moderately. Maybe try it on a leaf to see what you think.

I think the rosemary would look nice kind of scattered around like you had the moss. Maybe adding more would have made it less noticeable in a way!
Hi Nigel. Love this yukka forest. Just an idea for you: the dunes look great. I thought what might add a touch more realism here is a bit of extra "gathered" sand up the side of the base of the trunk on the side which is facing the wind. Just an idea. Great video. ✌️

I thoroughly despise the Asparagus-Fern, lol.
It started as one small weed in the front yard under some bushes in the early '90s... then took over the entire front yard planter/perimeter areas... then took over the side yard... then slowly started taking over the back yard planter/perimeter areas. Finally removed it ALL last year with some help.. about 700-1000 sqft of it.. established, mature and tons of roots.
Another plant I hate is the foxtail agave. I removed 3 huuuge clusters of it. They grow fast. Each cluster had about 8-10 pups/plants in it... each pup/plant ranged from 4-6'+ wide.. got a chainsaw and cut them all up. Took about 4 weeks worth of trashcan pickups. Maybe a ton total, if not more.

Thanks, I'll check it out! Yes those Asparagus ferns could be quite a problem in warmer climates and they have little nasty thorns!
Like the work you've done on the yucca. Would you consider using black aquarium rocks in lieu of sand? Or black sand? You will definitely have some people thinking about that asparagus fern bonsai. Great idea to include that in the show. The hibiscus bonsai is looking GOOD!
@Nigel Saunders, I am certainly a big follower of your "don't listen to anyone" philosophy, yet you have earned a certain credibility so I may listen to you more than many, though I'm going to try anyway. I am curious about bonsai training a julep mint and wondering if you have tried or seen one. I have doubts on the trunk thickening much more so instead of leaving it the foot tall shrub it is now, perhaps i cut to the lower branches and work on shaping the tree, keeping the nodes tight and leaves small. I also know I may have to fight smaller mints popping up frequently, probably even repot semi-regularly.
Love your Asparagus Fern. I like the layout of your Yucca. Probably easier to use a paint brush when moving soil or sand around? Thanks for the video

I think this planting would look great if the 2 main trees had a rope bridge going from one tree to another over a river and have walking trails at the bottom. People would have to climb up one of the main trees and cross the bridge then climb down the other main tree to get over the river.

Hi Nigel. Your lemon tree videos inspired me to start bonsai. I know have 9 seedlings started. Any tips for these young seedlings. I also saw your grapefruit tree and started my own seed. It is now a seedling. I live in florida. Zone 9. Love your videos.
I would let the seedlings grow until the stems start to get woody, then re pot them with a little bit of root work and a reduction to the height also. Just little steps at first until the tree gains more strength, then slowly work towards creating your tree form and getting a nice radial root base.

if you said you found a funnel type spider in Australia, you would NOT be rescuing it with bare hands 😨😨😨 hahaha the majority of spiders in Aus don't get rescued 😅
Anyone had any luck with a buddleia bonsai? I have a buddleia with a really nice trunk and nebari and want to know how suitable it would be for bonsai.
I've never tried Butterfly bush as a bonsai. They do grow here, but they always have a tough time making it through the winter. I think it would be a tough plant to grow with our cold winters.
@@TheBonsaiZone Hi Nigel, thanks for the reply, love your videos! They grow like weeds here in the UK, even in between the cracks in walls. I have a couple in the garden and one of them has a really nice trunk. I will try it and let you know if it works.

Judging for the bottom part of the box Yew’s (almost rotted) I think is overwatered and behind the decline you showed time ago.

I have one question !!🙋I just bought my first Japanese juniper bonsai and there are knats fly around it I put vingar traps around it.any tips on getting them away .😆
Those sound like fungus gnats. There is a number of natural sprays or soil additives to keep those buggers away. Read the bug list on the package to make sure they are on it. Most should also include spider mites as well
I thought you dropped a pack of gum in your Yucca planting. The rock is a little too symmetrical.
I can't seem to have any successful clone attempts. What do yo think would be the easiest way to do a basic tree branch cutting and get it to root. Seems like it always gets root rot or whatever it's called, they get soggy and die..
You probabaly wet the soil too much, it should only be a bit moist. But it also depends on what you are propagating, stapelias are supposed to be put in dry soil.
You can also try rooting hormones or something antibacterial like honey or cinnamon. When I took yucca cuttings I added a bit of cinnamon to the cuts, 2 out of 3 survived.
