Jade Bonsai Update and Testing a GoPro,The Bonsai Zone, Dec 2019

- It's been one year after putting my Jade bonsai forest together and it's time to do the first pruning!
I'm doing some styling work on my large Jade cutting that I rooted over the last 10 months.
I also test a GoPro camera, to see how I can use it for my bonsai videos and photography.
The bonsai in this video are Crassula ovata gollum, to see previous videos of the Jade forest.....

I've been growing jades since the mid-70s, always from single leaves with great success. They really are the best idiot-proof plant there is!
They are really awesome plants and great for bonsai! You must have some really nice ones by now!

About a year ago, I was looking around in a local nursery when I found a very overgrown jade in the back of the jade section. I ended buying it for $10, and after repotting the largest growth, it began thriving! I gave it to my mom.
It's good it found a good home!
Also, the gopro view was great! It really felt like I was walking through a giant jade forest.
Older large Jades will always have a special place with me!! If you can pair that gopro with the app, you can change from wide angle to standard and change other settings like resolution etc.

That go pro footage of the ficus microcarpa (correct if I butchered it.) made it look like a huge ancient tree from the heart of a rainforest.

Merry Christmas Nigel! Years ago I also bought a GoPro for my research. I wanted to measure the speed of running lizards (yep!) and GoPro was the cheapest camera that was able to record at high speeds.
Very interesting and a good choice of a camera!

Hi Nigel...I use gopro's all the time....you can get add on lenses to bring you closer as the focal length is around 11 inches....there are many lenses if you are not getting close enough....go pro's are perfect to get the whole pic in though :)..I have the 5

Hi Nigel! Your jade bonsaï are my favorite, even though some people don’t think they are real bonsaï. I was wondering what was the best way to help jade getting bigger. Big or small pot? And how about the pruning? I sometimes read that the leaves gives strength to the three. I also read that the branches gives strength to the trees. On the other hand, I read that pruning gives strength to the trees and that removing unwanted branches helps the jade tree grow. What is real among what I’ve read? Thanks for helping me!
The more leaves the plant has the faster it will grow. If you want a tree to thicken up the quickest, just leave it grow, however you may be sacrificing the shape of the tree while you do this. Most trees that are grown to be a bonsai are allowed to grow about 6 sets of leaves and then they are pruned back to the first or second set, depending on the direction of them. Pruning will create more branching that will eventually give you a nice crown on the tree. When you get a good dense crown the tree will have lots of leaves for photosynthesis and your tree will grow healthy and with vigor.
I love the gollum jade. I hope to see mine in an advanced planting someday.
I saw a documentary of African foot hills that had this type of plant. The rocks in the area were very angular and almost black.
Thanks, I'm always looking for shots of Jades in the wild, I have a collection of pictures and many are located near rocky cliff faces. It would be fun making a miniature landscape with them.

Awesome idea with the GoPro! Though the newer ones have a much better stabilization mode. I recommend getting at least a Hero 5 or higher

I have a 17yr old variegated jade, ive been afraid to trim. It has a grow light, i wouldnt have thought now would be a good time to trim it though. Just bought a fancy camera, to show off some of my fun stuff. Like my echeveria bonsai!
Be sure the soil is almost dry before you prune the Jade bonsai. If you prune off the leaves with wet soil, it could lead to root rot. I hope you start a TH-cam channel, I'd love to see your plants!

When I purchased one of these a couple of years ago they were labeled as "Hobbit Succulent" Didn't realize it was a jade for a while but it ended up just about tripling in size over last summer. Haven't tried to prune it yet, I kind of like the natural look.
Yes, the Hobbit Jades look great even without any pruning!

The GoPro lens give a sort of “walleye effect “ not sure if it’s a brand thing or because it is quite an older model. I have never filmed with gopros.
As a last resort....I'll have to read the manual
hi nigel merry christmas and a happy new year to all the family and the cockrells in the background. the gopro you have used is a very old one, still does a great job, but i just bought my daughter a gopro 7 plus black and its fantastic. all the add ons and accs you can buy are endless, the software is brilliant to. you can buy these cameras off ebay or even better amazon which you can return within 31 days of purchase if for any reason your not happy. just a small word of warning, gopro have a gopro 8 plus out, but what they dont tell you is if you scratch or break the cameras lens-window you cannot replace it as you can with all there previous models which just come of with a small turn. they do not repair them, so you are left with a very expensive paper weight. hope this helps you, all the best for 2020 and keep your vids coming.

To be honest, I personally think the Canon does a better job 95% of the time, but I guess this GoPro isn't the newest model. On some "inside the forest" close-up scenes the GoPro might be fun to use, but other than that, I think the Canon does it's job very well.

Hey Nigel, Merry Christmas! Two questions. Are those Crassula Ovata or portulicaria afra? Also, did you modify your soil mix for these? I've had some portulicaria that have struggled without some organics mixed in to the medium. Thanks for what you do! Happy holidays to you and your family as well as everyone else in the bonsai zone!
Edit: Just realized it's a Gollum. I was watching on my phone while on lunch earlier today.
If the trees are in too crumbly a soil mix, there is always a danger that they could tip over until the roots fill the pot. You may have to water or mist the trees more often in this type of soil as it is very free draining and will dry out faster.You can always add a little organics to the soil until you find the perfect mix. It all depends on the conditions the plant is in, the humidity levels and the light and temperature. Happy holidays!

Hi Nigel!. Ive been. Into bonsai for 5 mnths now n loving every second of it! Any possibility you would consider making a video about fertilising bonsai. I noticed your bonsai soil looks like perlite and it shouldnt have much nutrients... What type of fertiliser do you use on evergreens, conifers, deciduous, outdoor, indoor, flower blossom, fruit, succulent, bonsai and seedlings and why we should use fertiliser in non nutrient rich potting mediums. Homemade or purchased fertilisers. How to make and how to use the fertilisers (Liquid or solid, slow release or instant fertilisers.) When to use fertiliser for different tree species, 1-3 year seedlings and repotted bonsai... Schedule fertilising? or fertilise whenever?, Seasonal fertilising?... You would also need to be working on one or more of your beautiful bonsai in the video as you explain your fertilising techniques, reasons... Thanks for another great video!

I got a jade at my nearby nursery and I keep it on my windowsill someone closed the shade and one of the main branches on jade is barely hanging on and a lot of soil fell out 😬
I would place some large stones around the Jade to prop it up until it begins to support itself again.

Interesting test shots with the Go-pro. The overhead views were particularly good. Seems like it would be a useful and fun video making tool to have. ~ One possible way to create a subtle, non-distracting landscape for the forest would be to have a wash. A wash is a ribbon of exposed gravel cut into the surface of a desert floor by run off from a cloud burst. A minimal amount of pumice and / or very fine gravel placed into a slight indentation in the soil could be used to create the barest suggestion of a wash. ~ Happy Holidays to you and yours - from the land of Giant Jades ! - John

Hello Sir, I actually grow a variety of things from seeds... wisteria, apple, lemon etc I know they may not be good for fruiting trees for some years but I was thinking as bonsai material they might do good. Would you have any advice on how I might be able to possibly sell my growings off to bonsai makers maybe? Or if it would benefit me to maybe try and contact some bonsai groups locally? I'm not asking how to sell so much as if it would be a good idea to try and contact some of these groups locally to me? I don't want to unduly harass any group of people with a solicitation if it would just be bothersome and unneeded....I don't really know if Bonsai creators would welcome or be irritated by my "offer" to them if there's no real need to the service I would be suggesting. There is always a market for pre bonsai material. If the seedlings are well cared for and the roots are nice and radial and the tree is developed to the point of looking like a tree, you can get good money for them. I have found that very few people are willing to pay for something that looks like an ordinary plant,.It would be best to join a bonsai club and see what members are buying and what they are willing to pay for them. Try and build a relationship with the club, supplying them with trees for demos and work shops.
@@TheBonsaiZone Thank you so much! I don't even really care about a "sale" per sey. I grow stuff because it's fun and I enjoy doing so but became worried when I realised one day i'm going to have 20 non fruiting apple *trees*....I wanted a plan I guess. I don't want to deliberately kill something I grew, granted for no reason, but if there was a need for them I'd rather see them live than die. A profit of some form would be cool but I'd donate them rather than see them die first. If nothing else it's comforting to know I can call a Bonsai training course or something and know they would probably welcome free martial.
I'm a weird emohippypagan who thinks it's sacrilege to kill a tree if it could live otherwise.

Hello Scott, i am using a 50/50 mix of perlite and turface, the perlite is Miracle grow and the turface is sold as Safetysorb. I sift the ingredients to remove the dust and fine particles to get a final size of 3 to 4mm (1/8")
I mist the jades twice a day and am careful not to wet the soil too much. I keep the Jades outside in the summer, but they go under cover when it rains as to not mess up the watering cycle of watering thoroughly and then letting the soil dry out. I add a small pinch of fertilizer in the water every time I water, even in the winter. In the summer I can water almost every second day, but in the winter I just mist the trees and water very lightly. If you soak the soil in winter and you get a week of cloudy weather, the soil will stay wet and your roots may rot.

Is there no problem pruning these in winter rather than in spring, considering the limited amount of light they will get in the coming months?
You have to keep the soil on the dry side and give the plant as much sun or light as you can. As long as you don't soak the soil, it should do well!
hey nigel, I dont know what software u use to edit, but if its premiere pro or after effects theres an effect called warp stabilize.
when used right this can remove alot if shake from the footage!

@@TheBonsaiZone make sure to fiddle with the setting, as often a lower % leads to better outcomes, when footage is extremely shakey trying to salvage it trough this method just wont work. hope youll get it to be usefull sometimes :)

If you give your jade a spacious pot and water only when the leaves start to feel a bit floppy, it can grow surprisingly fast. I have one I statted about two years ago from a leaf. it is now about 2 feet or aprroximately 50 cebtuineters high. with a stem at the soil level as big as my ring finger.
Amazing, they can really take off once you get a strong root system!
I really like this planting and remember when you created it. I really like to work on crassula ovata. As I saw your video last year, I knew i had to get some crassula ovata gollum, too. And guess what... I got one at our vacation last summer. This winter it's time make some cuttings and flood the house with gollum just like it's alreadfy full of the regular crassula ovata. By the way. The name you use "Jade" always irritates me, cause in our country "Jade" stands for Portulacaria afra. We call crassula ovata translated "Moneytree" or "Pennytree" but I know you use the name "Moneytree" for another species. Luckily we have the latin names! Merry Christmas Nigel! .... playful as you are, I am really astounded that you didn't hang some Christmas baubles into your trees....

Here in Canada crassula ovata is jade and portulacaria afra is elephant bush. It doesnt really matter though, common names are silly and often create confusion with all their overlap.
