  • I begin with a look at my Dwarf Schefflera bonsai, then I defoliate and prune my tiny Pink Pixie Bougainvillea forest.
    Today's update is my Orchard truck, the 1972 Ford F250 crew cab!

    Hello! Just commenting to let you know that I appreciate your contents and enthusiasm very much. It’s been year and 3 months since I myself thanks to you started bonsai also. My life is more fulfilling as I didn’t really have a hobby before haha and I’m all thankful and everything, very excited to go through bonsai zone season 7 too! Also, still super anticipating the succulent series you metioned in season 5, if I remember right:)

      Thank you, I've been adding succulent plants to my bonsai collection and some of them are working well. I'll try and get together a succulent video soon, they have a lot of potential I think! I'm really liking my Crown of Thorns, Jades, Aloes and Yucca's. I think there is so many more species that can become really great bonsai and I'm sure I'll be getting more.

    The shot of the trunk structure at 10:20 really brought out how impressive this planting has become. When I used to do interiorscaping I maintained many S. arbicolas. They shoot out long straight branches that need cutting back periodically to keep their size in check. Then from the pruning point they just shoot out more long growths with few side branches. My experience helps me to appreciate what you have created over twenty years.

    FYI PLA is only compostable when it’s exposed to elevated temperatures above 160 F and and high water content, and it takes at least 90-120 days at those conditions. If it goes to a landfill it takes just as long as PET to decompose.

    Hi Nigel, I rally appreciate your videos. They inspire me to make the best of my bonsai every time I watch one of them. Which brings me to a question you or the community might have an answer to. My ficus microcarpa seems to have a bit of a problem with some kind of flies. They seem to emerge from that plant and when I saw them I remembered one of your earlier videos, in which you had to do some major root surgery on one of your trees. If you could get back to me, it would be really awesome, since I fear that the tree might suffer. Thanks in advance!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flies might be Gnats that tend to live around wet soil. It is possible they are flying aphids also. If they are gnats, let your soil dry out a little more between watering and get some yellow sticky greenhouse paper to catch flying insects.
      If the insects are aphids, you can spray them with insecticidal soap.

    Your Schefflera bonsai looks very NICE! I can imagine it growing in Hawaii. You have really done a great job with it; an excellent example of working with a plant sold as a house plant. Many aspiring bonsaists think they have to spend big bucks on plants for bonsai, but that's not true. Just look at what you have been able to achieve with this plant. Kudos to you!! Loved the bonsai forest update. And, the truck is definitely coming along nicely. Are you using new old stock parts to replace things like the windshield?

      Thanks Pat, several people have suggested I submit it for the US national show, but I'm going to wait until it is more developed. The truck will be a mix of aftermarket and original parts. • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can be re potted anytime after a period of vigorous growth as long as the conditions are good for recovery. The nice hot humid days of summer are ideal. Let your tree grow all winter, spring and the first half of summer, then reduce the top of the tree back, root prune and re pot. The tree should recover well in the good summer weather. Be sure to mist the tree and keep it out of the wind after re potting. I hope all goes well!

    You dont need a 3D scanner to scan objects. You can take multiple images using any camera and use Medhroom: an open source software that helps to extract 3D models from photographs. Then import the file in blender to crop and other things needed for 3d printing. Its extremely easy.There are many tutorials available on youtube for that.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They bloom off of the latest shoots, you will find that after your current flowers fade away that the plant will start to grow once again. After this new growth has elongated and has provided enough energy to the plant, it will bloom once again. You can easily get 2 to 3 flowering periods per year and when conditions are right, it will continue to flower for almost the whole summer.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many trees go through growth cycles and much is related to the seasonal changes or light conditions. My Acacias often loose all their leaves over the winter and then grow like crazy in spring. Just be sure not to over water when they have only a few leaves and they should grow strongly once the weather gets better.

      I was looking up ants and some can live a long life! It's incredible, here is what I found...
      Ant colonies can be long-lived. The queens can live for up to 30 years, and workers live from 1 to 3 years. Males, however, are more transitory, being quite short-lived and surviving for only a few weeks. Ant queens are estimated to live 100 times as long as solitary insects of a similar size.

Can You please, if it’s not a big problem create a video on cuttings, and how are you rooting them. Thank You!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is best to root them in the summer. I would place the cuttings in a glass of water, until you see the roots just about to grow, then plant them deeply in bonsai soil, keeping them well watered and in full sun. Woody cuttings are best to use. I'll try and get a video out about cuttings.

      All my Horse Chestnut trees got attacked by boring insects and they died. I have tried several over the years, but I always get the same results, boring insects. I have given up trying to grow them in my area, they are one of my favorite bonsai, but I just can't grow them.

    Your 2 liter watering bottle looks like it has something added to your water. May I ask what are you adding to your 'tea?'

      I collect the water from the roof of our house, in fall the autumn leaves stain the water an amber colour.

    When in spring do you suggest pruning bonsais?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally prune tropical trees after a good period of growth, in fall before they come inside and spring before they go outside. Hardy trees are usually done mid winter for branch pruning and then the new growth is pruned after a period of growth, usually late spring.

    Hey Mr.Saunders. I’ve been following your channel since 2017 and I was wondering what your usual bonsai mix is.

      I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. I sift the soil to get a particle size of 1/8" or 3 to 4 mm.

      If you could do this it would be great. I would like to print them out and let them be casted in bronze. If i manage that i would like to send a few your way, to give away at a Society meeting.

    Any tips for getting a nice mossy base / top of soil. Thanks

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several factors!
      You need high humidity, a free draining bonsai soil so the soil stays not too wet and not too dry. The moss likes to be watered with rain water. I mist my moss at least twice a day and fertilize weakly every day. The moss grows best with little air currents to dry it out. It needs to be watered consistently to keep the soil damp.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi Nigel, I would love your input on this, I'm from Alabama and we have longleaf white pine everywhere for the forestry industry. I do not know how well a longleaf or long needle pine would work for bonsai in the first place and if i could improvise it, would it be more worth while to find a more developed tree to start and prune it back or to start with a smaller sapling?
    always love your videos, Conner

      I have seen very nice examples of the native White pine as bonsai, however they are rare! I think it is best to start with a tree that has some good development. They are slow growing in a pot. I would grow them as a medium to large bonsai because of the needle size. Find a tree that you like and one that has a good compact root system. Here is a good article to read....
