    It’s a beautiful tree sir - thank you for sharing your life’s work and philosophy. Artistic bonsai has its merits, but your natural approach, which maintains the purity of a tree’s growth, better accentuates each plant’s unique inner essence. I find it inspiring.
    My untrained eye thinks this tree would look equally captivating in a small round pot with the “front” being the part of the trunk that actually moves away from the viewer. The tree is so horizontal that it might give it more depth and character that way. It’s stunning as is of course.
    Thanks for posting!

    That is a very nice looking bonsai! Looks very old! I have been listening to you and paying much more attention about removing crossing branches, branches that grow straight up and inward. Along with directional pruning. And I think my little trees are looking much better these days. Thank You Nigel.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      You will have to let it grow and then prune it back. Repeating this clip and grow over many years will keep the height in check, but the trunk will always grow larger in diameter. Each time you prune the tree back it will get a little taller so you'll have to replace the apex of the tree with a new shoot when the opportunity arises.

    It could be cool if you added a kind of support that Japanese gardeners use to support their trees as it ages and rots. It could save the tree and add a lot to it's ancient looking.

    Hi Nigel! I don't like the idea to let the deadwood rot away. I think the shape of the trunk will not look good without it. There are other ways to preserve the deadwood. You don't need to take lime sulfur. What about woodhardener. The liquid plasticsoak in the wood and hardens.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBonsaiZone Just my opinion. By the way, I always imagine this spruce in a at least one third smaller and round literaty pot. So the tree would lean far over the lip of the pot, like a tree on a cliff. What do you think?

    Nigel, lovely looking tree but whats with the constant radial root syndrome? When you look at trees in nature I don't think i've ever seen a tree with perfect radial roots: I have seen old gnarly, cross over, bumps, sucker branches and out of the ground roots.
    The need for perfection is unachievable, as you've said on many occasions use nature as your influence i.e. General Sherman, the thought it has to look like this or like that might be our undoing. If we like the trees we have on our benches we have achieved perfection in our eyes, as every tree has a beauty of it's own and if it has cross over roots so be it. (rant done).
    The lichen just reminded me of the old trees in the Welsh valley's and Cumbria U.K 🇬🇧

  • @entyropy3262
    @entyropy3262 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nigel, you do not necessarily need to use Lime sulfur, there are a lot other products that will have no colouring effect and you will not see any difference but the wood will have higher resistance towards rot. Walter Pall uses some preserving fluid on his decidious trees, I would not say that they do look unnatural in any way.
    The problem with your spruce's deadwood is, if you do not treat it, there will some day eventually come insects and drill inside it to lay eggs and the hatchlings will destroy your tree from the inside, with preservation fluid you can prevent this scenario. Bonsai trees will die early enough anyway, no need to improve the risk for them. It's quite contradicting that you fight pests but leave your spruce vulnerable and say it's for naturalistic reasons. I think if the rotting process reaches a certain stage it will create a light smell that will attract exactly those insects that will finish this tree then (it's my thesis).
