I start working on a Geranium plant, to begin it's life as a bonsai.
The video finishes with an update to the 1972 Ford F250 crewcab, the truck for our community orchard.

Did you know that in 1788, botanists discovered that then word Geranium had already been used for another plant, so the name of this plant was changed to pelargonium. Gardeners are so stubborn that, after 240 years, we are still calling them geraniums, even though the true geranium has been improved and is now a common garden plant, too. Pelargoniums are true succulents. They store water in their stems. In times of drought, the leaves dry up and fall off. When the rain comes, they grow new leaves and bloom. In the old days, when they were not so easy to obtain, gardeners would dig up their plants in the fall, let the leaves dry up, and store the roots and stems in root cellars until spring.

In Dutch we call Pelargonium French Geranium. The real Geranium is called ooievaarsbek meaning stork beak, because the seeds looks like a stork beak.

@@harmen9035 That's very interesting because geranium means crane plant and pelargonium means stork plant. Both were named because of the seed pods of both look like the beak of a wading bird.

Oh my goodness!! I'm not only excited about pots, I've been planning Geranium Bonsai as well! I was going to keep the cuttings from my heirloom variety and my other.... I have been looking for a "Flame Geranium" It has much smaller leaves. I chop my plants every spring before they go outside as they become lanky in winter. They get what you describe as a "winter coat" and "Summer coat" as well :D You made my whole day so much better! Thank you Nigel! Guess I'll go out and do some shoveling... sigh... Haha! Oh that truck will sure look spiffy!!

2 great videos back to back, thanks Nigel. The geranium is a pretty obscure bonsai, their smell always put me off - shades of 80's Sunday afternoons spent visiting old aunt's houses! Good to see some progress on the truck too. The lift and tyres change will make it look and feel like a whole different truck

I had to stop the part 1 in the evening, because my dog wanted some attention, but it was worth it, having 2 videos in the morning ^^,
I love the pots made by your friend and the demonstration of the clay collected from nature was cool. We have a lot of natural blue-gray clay here in Finland and as a kid I used to collect it and make ashtrays to everyone. Let them dry in the sun tho.. Might get back to the "pottery" one day!
The pelargonium looks cool, had me thinking of actually making a bonsai with flowers. Hope the flowers in yours aren't bright red tho, they might just not work with the lovely pot you chose :)
Can't wait to see the Ford back together, she'll be a looker, I'd say :D

Part 1 and Part 2 of this video were jam-packed with interested snippets of information related to bonsai. Like the geranium bonsai. I have always wanted to make one so now I have the courage to try it. Do you get help from any scout groups, garden groups, school garden clubs for the community garden? Like how you are trying to get the entire community involved. The truck update is interesting. Sounds like you are using original parts if available. Is that right? Thanks for you videos - always intriguing to watch.

I enjoy and find relatable that you take on the odd plant now and again as a random challenge just to see if you can make a go of it. Geraniums / pelargoniums are sometimes made into 3 to 4 foot tall ‘trees’ called standards. You might find some helpful pruning and cultural information if you research how to make a standard geranium. The channel of the U.K. Pelargonium and Geranium Society has a couple of videos on yt.

Great video Nigel. The pot making was interesting. I have been making hypertufa pots for Alpines. I’m now wondering if I could make hypertufa for bonsai. I’m going to give it a try! (Hypertufa is cement, peat and vermiculite or perlite ) they look quite rustic like stone alpine troughs.

Hi Nigel....I have seen most of your latest videos, so did some searches in your archives and found this. I just wondered if this plant survived, as I don't think I have seen any updates on it? In our part of the world, Durban, South Africa, I am not sure of any truth in the myth, but Geraniums are supposed to deter snakes from entering your garden. Consequently, due to the large number of snakes that we have (most are harmless, but people tend to kill ANY snake!!), Geraniums are readily available at all our local nurseries, and are very cheap at a couple of dollars (equivalent), so people plant them all over their gardens. So was it successful? Also, I have taken your lead and am growing Portulacaria Afra for a similar planting of yours (also very cheap here), and they are coming along after a couple of months. Also.....sorry to go on, but have built a ruined house (out of the grandchildren's play bricks!!), which will have three Ficus Benjamina's planted over it tomorrow in a root over ruin planting. Not a temple, but a ruin....we will have to see how that works. Keep up the good work, and greetings from an Autumnal East Coast of SA.
