    Loved the greenhouse update. And.....the livestock. What a cute chicken; and, love those ducks. I was surprised to see Muscovy ducks. We have them in our neighborhood - they live on the canals. Like how natural you have left the back property.
    Thought about you the other day. I picked up a large piece of Sea Grape that a neighbor had cut from a tree. It had such nice potential I carried it home and put it in a bucket of water. Was surprised that after a day the remaining leaves had plumped up and a couple of others had sprouted. Yesterday I cleaned up the dead areas and put rooting hormone on the cut before planting it in a pot with soil. Keeping my fingers crossed that it now roots. It could make a nice bonsai.
    Great job on your tree. Removing those roots has made a world of difference in the look of the tree. Well done! Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy your videos and learn a great deal as well.

    That’s a lot of land you have!! We have some really old looking Horse Chestnut trees at the park next to my apartment that have great bark texture and awesome fluted trunks! The compound leaves are YUGE! I never imagined they could make good bonsai. Btw, great work on your cedar, it looks really good! I love seeing all of that hard pruning!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you LAN, I really like the way the branches on the Chestnut trees droop in nature. I just don't seem to be able to grow them, all mine get attacked by boring insects. I was trying out the cheap plastic Canon 50 mm 1.8 lens the other day. I got it from a garage sale for almost nothing. Much to my surprise, it actually not a bad lens! It's fairly sharp and you can get some really nice depth of field. I'll have to include some blurry background shots in my next video!

    I know your video that I am watching is 4 years old, but a tip...I saw how heavy the tree stumps were, and I use an easy tip for heavy objects. I put them on my kids old plastic toboggan, slides across the ground by pulling it, and you don't have to lift so high whatever you need to move. Saves on your back.

    Another amazing video. That chicken is awesome :)
    I have a new Alberta spruce with a nice little trunk and the roots were all encroached, so I went for an emergency root work last Friday.
    I pulled two roots that were really tangled and busted my neck so bad I couldn't sleep or drive for days.
    Finally today, after almost a week I am almost back to normal.
    The tree seems to be doing good after a drastic root work and branch pruning.
    But that was an experience!
    So no matter how big the tree, thread carefully with entangled roots!
    I guess that was my lesson.
    Its not as easy as Mr. Saunders makes it look!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's good to hear you made it through the ordeal! I had separated ribs once when I fell off of a trampoline into a rock garden. I had to sleep upright and not move for about a week. Slowly over the next month I got better to the point where I could bend down and get into a car. That was a good hard lesson for me. Take care and keep your roots radial!

      Many people don't like the way I work on the roots, bare rooting, combing and styling the root base. The alternate method is leaving the roots intact and just shaving a bit off the sides, top and bottom. This method doesn't really correct any defects in the root base and is usually done on an established bonsai tree.

Yesterday I noticed that a lot of root are growing and coming out the drainage holes and even inside the pot feels packed with roots. I was thinking to move the tree into a bigger pot. Do you think that it is the right time to do it? If not, when is the best time to do some work like repotting?

    Thoughts on bare-rooting/root-washing the Thuja? I recently collected two Thuja and a spruce from a friend's garden and have found very different views on how to get collected conifers into bonsai soil - from "don't touch the roots at all" to "complete bare rooting" (like you have). At this stage I've just trimmed roots enough to fit the pots/boxes and hoping they survive while I work out next steps. But aware they'll need to get into proper mix at some point... Advice?

    Nigel, i'm sorry, just a question off topic, i asked a question before and you kindly answered, so .... With bonsai mesh, is it ok if you cover entire bottom of bonsai pot with it, or could that maybe stop the drainage a little with water clogging in holes of mesh on bottom of bonsai pot between the drainage holes. I made my first bonsai, only yesterday, it seems good so far but i'm worried if i should of made the mesh just cover the holes and not the entire bottom of pot!!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the amount of water trapped by the mesh is not significant. I have seen bonsai pots with the bottom of the pot all curved the wrong way, so water pools in the bottom and the trees seem to do fine despite this!

    Hi Nigel, When is the best time to do re-potting on my ficus and umbrella trees? They are indoor trees.
    Love the videos. I also get a little queasy with major root pruning.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is best to let them grow wild for a few months before re potting to get the vigor of the plant really high. Once it is nice and bushy up top, you can prune and re pot without fear. It is important to give the trees good conditions for recovery. I like to re pot mine mid summer. In the heat and humidity, they don't skip a beat!

      My Cedar was collected, it was a larger tree neat the edge of a pathway. It had been cut down to a stump and I would guess it is about 15 years old? I am really inspired by the looks of the red Cedar trees on the northern west coast of North America. The ancient white Cedar trees on the Niagara escapement in Ontario are also very inspirational! If you google "ancient Cedar trees" You'll find some good pictures and styles.
