Giving My Wild Larch Bonsai a Prune, The Bonsai Zone, Sept 2019

  • I've left my Larch bonsai to grow for the entire summer without any pruning. Today, I give it a prune and re position one of the branches.
The tree in this video is a Larix laricina, commonly known as a Tamarack or the North American Larch.

Just a silly question couldn't u use fishing "wire" to direct the branch? Just thinking if u wanna take it to a show u wouldn't be able to see the wire. As I said I've no experience just curious.

The Yew still has green on top, but it isn't growing with any vigor. It might stay green for the rest of summer, but I think it is unlikely it will survive the winter. I still have a glimmer of hope, but time will tell.

I live in New Jersey. Some of my bonsai friends tell me that it doesn't get cold enough to have a Boreal Larch as a bonsai. Perhaps I could stick it in the freezer? or....I could move to Canada! I have people in North Ontario. Is that "north" enough? My friends point me to the Japanese Larch, but ..... it's just not the same. It would probably be too cold in New Jersey. LOL

Hello Rahul, it might be possible that your tree is just growing quickly and the older leaves are falling off as the trunk and branches thicken. If the growing tips look healthy and vigorous, then this could be a possibility. This can happen with an old Jade that hasn't been cared for very well and then suddenly it's given good light and careful watering. This good care can cause it to grow quickly for the first time in a long time and the sudden thickening causes the old leaves to fall.
