Honda GL1800 Gold Wing review - it really is *that* good

  • The Honda Gold Wing (or Goldwing if your spacebar is broken) is a big, heavy, expensive motorbike with a reverse function. But if that's the limit of your knowledge then watch this video and have your mind expanded - it's actually a sublime bike with impressive handling, an amazing engine and more comfort than a panda that's eaten a sofa.

    Im 46. I had a Fat Bob for 6 months.. upgraded to Indian Chieftain as I was more inclined towards performance /Cruise luxury. Guess what after owning it for over 2 yrs, test rode 2022 DCT and was completely sold Out! Now I have this GL18 DCT for lil over 6 months and already crossed 1100 miles. THIS IS THE BIKE!

    Never a fan was I! Limped into Honda Gedges in Pevensey bay, on my GS (puncture) late on a Friday! Yes we’ll get you a new tire! Won’t be for a week. Please do take the gold wing bagger! (Marvellous people they are too) well! What a blooming marvellous experience! Despite the weight, the slow speed handling is pure magic. Sport mode! Wow.. move over gixer! I looked as cool as penguin piss! More comfy than my favourite arm chair and I am now planning my devious move into ownership!

    I have the 2020 Bagger DCT. I filled it up yesterday and it said the range was 254 miles and I've been getting 55+ mpg. You can lock the panniers with the fob just like central locking with a car . I find the brakes to be excellent ...never been in a situation where they have not felt up to the job.
    Best bike I have ever owned!

    There hadda been something wrong with the bike you rode. There's no other way a 'Wing's brakes feel remotely lacking. My 'Wing's brakes feel and work spectacularly well. Sport bike level of braking with almost no discernable dive in corners as hard as i can push it. The Goldwing is essentially a sport bike that's the most capable touring bike on the planet. And those plastic covers are actually just covering up the steel crash guards.

    A very honest video and overall I would agree with you! I’ve just had a test ride on one today (DCT) absolutely amazing overall, loved it! Probably the best bike I have ever ridden! It gives you so much confidence! Now, I know it will not suit everyone, it just depends on what you want from a bike and it’s not an off road bike but it really is a touring bike! It’s such a nice place to be when riding it! The handling surprised me, it really does hold its own on the twisty’s! Would I buy one?? Absolutely!

    I told you it was good! As an owner of the DCT Tour version (complete with Airbag!) I agree with your analysis pretty much entirely except for the suspension being able to bottom out - on the Tour you can set the suspension to hard/normal/soft (the same as you can on my GS) and I have a feeling that's one of the features not on the "standard" bike - that and the heated seat are excellent features you gain on the tour along with a few other bits and bobs. Fabulous machine though - you can keep your trailers, Blackpool illuminations, tassle clubs etc of the lardy older bikes - the 2018 on is an awesome machine, infact the best bike I've ever ridden.....

      Hi Andy, Finally had a go on a Wing after watching the great reviews all you chaps do. Im used to big bikes but it noticeably feels much smaller when you actually ride it if that makes sense, quite confidence inspiring straight out of the box and as comfy as an old armchair. Just screen issues for me initially and a lack of air flow for ventilation behind the fairing on hotter days. Probably great in UKs normal weather conditions🥶🌧🌧 but further tests required I think.👍

    I have to say that the brakes on my 2019 are extremely good. They're linked front to rear and rear to front. Easy to stop quickly on front brake alone if you want to.
    My mpg is at worst 52 to the imperial gallon and at best 59. 30 is drastic... but if you like the throttle, in sport mode it will empty the tank faster than you can fill it!
    For best results the DCT should be re-initialised occasionally. It's DIY (see TH-cam).
    Further to the 'risk' of the brake lever touching the folded mirror, on full left lock it definitely will ... with the consequence that the bike will stop dead and it will fall over to the left. Many reports of this happening. Traxxion Dynamics (TH-cam) have made a device to prevent it by restriction the range of the folding mirror.
    A very informative video and well presented. Cheers!

    Owning a large bike myself, Rocket 3, it's surprising how surprised people are that you can throw it around corners scrapping the pegs and at just how fast the thing is. The trick is not being afraid to throw it around, if you go into a corner half arsed you can get into trouble. But I'm a big bloke, like you. I can imagine smaller people being overwhelmed by these machines.

    It's an incredible bike, loads of space, pace and weather protection. Super comfy and perfect for running about Central London or a trip to Cornwall. Android Auto is excellent, just need a bit of time to learn how to use it. I challenge anyone not to like it, assuming they have actually ridden it. All those old Goldwing riders who deride it have no idea what they're talking about.

    Awesome big bike. The 6th gen remake really brings it into the modern era. On my tour version you can disable the fob by holding the Honda button for a few seconds. It will flash once to disable the engine and lock the luggage. Enable it again same thing and it flashes three times. Weird your shows 150 full. Mine says around 275.
    Tyre pressures are an interesting one. The manual says 36psi front and 42psi rear. I prefer it 40-42psi front. Its a heavy bike and my rocket 3 is 42psi front. Just seems a better ride. But I'm 6ft3 and 18 stone. Never get tyre warning issues.
    And I have to say I was shocked about your brake comments. I've never felt it lacking even when riding in sport mode down back roads and I have a v4, Two fireblades and an h2. The rear brake disc is a dual layer cooled disc it's pretty impressive on its own. Really are quite impressive combined. I honestly do think your demo bike seems knackered tbh! Even the mirror has taken a battering. Surprised you got this for a review. It's clearly in need of a good bit of tlc

      What is the actual fuel mileage per tank. 150 is unacceptable. The entertainment system is light years behind even Harley. Harley, plug it in and wear earbuds or headset and you are good to go. What is the horsepower, 97, or 125. No one can make up their mind on this issue, if it’s in the 90s, that is sad.

    • @theonlyredspecial
      @theonlyredspecial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arthurbatti9854 I sold mine a while ago but I think an average was just over 200 miles from a tank. power is around 125hp, but you do realise the torque figures are really what these bikes are about, right? they are designed to pull like trains to 100mph. The entertainment system is great on the goldwing if you are anyway remotely competent with setting up carplay. I dont think this is designed for most harley owners who like things 'as simple as possible'. single disc front brakes etc and 'nice sounds' from the exhaust.

I drove it daily to work summer and winter (Netherlands) . Since then I want nothing else. Due to some physical problems the last 18 years in the form of a Trike. Love my 2018 Wing. Came from a FJR, also great bike but just too quick and too hard on my dodgy back.
    The only farkle I have is a screen extender as the short Wing screen is useless. I rarely use the Android Auto as it is unreliable to get going. If on a long, unfamiliar, trip it is worth the time otherwise I just enjoy the ride.
    The DCT is great and the clunks and whines just highlight the fact that you are actually piloting a ferocious beast.
    Side bags are slightly better than a joke but not much.

    I've had my Tour version for over 2 years now and love it. Small people needn't fear it. I'm 5"6" tall and weigh just over 10 stone and have no problems at all. I get over 60 mpg out of mine so well over 200 miles per tank but I am quite a gentle rider. If you want to check if everything is locked you can turn the key off by pressing and holding the button on it. Same to turn it back on. My brakes are superb. I can do a pretty good impression of an emergency stop with two fingers. The TPMS is quite sensitive and you have to keep the tyre pressures within quite a narrow range to prevent it from activating. There are a few little niggles but overall I'm really happy with mine and pleased that Honda finally produced a Goldwing for motorcyclists and not the small minority who want a two wheeled car.

    Hi thanks for the review, I had a test ride on the same model yesterday as its on my short list for a bagger style tourer, have to say I was only disappointed by the screen. Im 5' 11" and even at full extension the wind noise and turbulence was deafening without good earplugs in, so at over 6ft your helmet must be much better than mine for wind noise. Was hoping I could do without plugs on this bike and use noise reducing head set to utilise the music and radio functions without broadcasting my music choices to the general public through the speakers, im sure everyone else also likes Susan Boyle😬 but no one likes an attention seeker. Apparently you can get a taller screen for the basic model but dealer wasn't sure of cost for this option. Going to try one with taller screen before deciding on this bike.🤔

    I own a 2019 Harley RoadGlide Special so very similar in size, weight and cost. I must admit lately for some reason I have been looking at GW DTC's.
    Anyway I went to a new dealership recently and they had a stunning 2019 GW DTC in red and black for sale, I thought wow I really like that and it had a few extras and price seemed pretty fair, so I thoughtI would throw my leg over and see what I though as I had never sat on one.... thats when it went downhill! I only have a 29" inseam and could not flatfoot it, also the seat felt very wide and the real deal breaker was I felt like I was sitting on it instead of in it as on my Harley, such a shame as I do like the styling and options on the GW, although I will be honest def not a lover of the clam type bags, but that would not be a deal breaker.
    Maybe another day I might take one out for a demo ride... who knows I might change my mind about it

I am actually going to sit on one of these....this morning! I'm riding an Electraglide, and I like it, but...it's time for something different maybe. I have owned older, larger Goldwings.....and ALWAYS felt that I was "stuck" into one riding position, knees forward, feet tucked back......that I hated. Will this bike be the same? Most important: Have you walked away from riding this bike wishing that the pegs were: 1) More forward and 2) lower by at least an inch or more? And....the big question: Would YOU buy a 2022 K 1600 GT with all of the new , ridiculous emissions .....or one of these? Thanks.

      I bought, and just sold, a '21 GW DCT Tour. Could not deal with the gear whine and tire noise and engine drone and extremely jerky throttle response with gear lash. Too used to riding BMW r1200RT's. I will not miss the bike, OTHER than the extremely comfortable seating position. The engine vibration was about equal to my BMW, but simply higher in frequency.
      The handlebar vibration was non-existent. You'll get a great reverse "walking speed", but that is required with this bike; it weighs 830 lbs with fuel. It is relatively easy to get this GW up on the center stand (great design), a nice surprise. Fuel economy, for me, was mediocre (about 41-42 MPG). It frustrated me that the top "tank" compartment was NOT lockable ! Have NO idea what Honda was thinking...saving 3 bucks on a lock ?? Navigation is terrible, and reminds me of my 1998 Tom Tom GPS...clunky. ALSO...you CANNOT input anything on the GW GPS while in motion (like you can the Garmins). VERY inconvenient.

    The 2018 Goldwing is a engineering marvel. Mine unfortunately is headed to either get a total frame replacement or will be totaled all due to what I would call piss poor desinging on one spot. Underneath the vehicle where the center stand mounts are 2) square blocks the center stand rod goes thru, the blocks hang down lower than anything else under there and act as a hook should something come in contact with them which is what happened to me. The left block was hit and torn away from the frame (cross member) which is solid welded to the side portion of the frame and it managed to crack all the way around this crossmember to where the rear shock coupler mounts to. If the leading edge of these blocks were simply cut at a 45 degree to deflect rather than absorb impact my bike would still be rolling and yes there is room for them to design an angle in that block.

After screaming at you, you give her a ride. She says “i love you, lets ride!” This Wing is not your grandfathers wing. It’s a supercruiser for tired crotch rocket enthusiasts. I like your review and what you said about the Bluetooth connectivity is true, that’s the part I don’t like about my bike. I have a DCT Tour version and I have that same problem of getting everything to work at the same time. My helmet by itself will work most of the time but when I add my girlfriend’s helmet in the mix everything never seems to work together. Other than that I love the bike, it’s truly a fun bike to ride. And by the way I never thought the breaks were weak at all, I’ve always had a lot of stopping power. One thing Honda needs to do is setup the bike so that you cannot drive off with the parking break engaged. When I first got my bike I had to get use to that parking break. Now I just don’t use it unless I absolutely need to. Nice video 👍

      It seems a stable as any other heavy touring bike I’ve owned. With the DCT there was a very slight leaning curve for me. Once I got used to being in the lowest gear and occasionally feathering the rear brake, it’s as stable as anything I’ve ridden at slow speeds. Figure 8’s and tight u turns are not a problem. But I have buddies that been riding middle weight bikes for 20 years that still can’t make a u turn. It’s just simple practice and confidence. This bike is about 805 lbs. but you don’t have to bench press it.. just lean and ride.

    What is wind noise like with the massive windscreen?

    • @geraldfrieberg7921
      @geraldfrieberg7921 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wind protection actually is NOT that great (not as good as my stock 2015 r1200RT BMW). A lot of front tire "singing" comes through the fairing cavity in the 40 to 55 MPH range, and this will drive you nuts after a while. If you ride a bike in the 70 to 80 MPH range the Wing is great. At lower speeds you will hear more gear and tire noise than anything else...can't even hear much engine noise until you hit higher speeds...then the dreaded "drone" kicks in. Just be aware of what you're getting into with the DCT 'Wing. A totally different animal altogether.

    • @geraldfrieberg7921
      @geraldfrieberg7921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want a very sedate, noise-free ride, with NO vibration at all, and a better overall GPS system, go with BMW. Also, with a BMW you'll not get the extreme herky-jerky throttle response and gear lash that you do with the Honda. With the BMW, you will get a feeling of a higher CG, but low speed handling will be better with the BMW because of its shorter wheelbase and manual tranny. The DCT 'Wing is a BEAR to handle at parking lot speeds. DO NOT EVER use the front brake on the GW at low speed when turning. If you do, you'll instantly DROP the bike. I know from experience. IMO, the GW has a more comfortable seating experience (but I am a little guy...5'8" and 140 lbs). So, MAKE SURE you test drive BOTH machines before buying ! The GW DCT is a very noisy "clickity-clack", herky-jerky bike. Just be ware prior to buying; don't make the same mistake I did !! Drive the GW for an extended period on a test drive, at ALL SPEEDS !
