  • The Honda Goldwing is Honda's flagship long distance luxury tourer. With it's DCT, airbag, massive 1800cc engine and wishbone suspension, it really should eat up any miles you throw at it. In this episode we review it from every single angle and see if it lives up to it's legendary status.

    I have a 2021 DCT Tour with 3k miles on it and it is the my first GW after 41 years on HDs (Ultras, etc.). I also have had younger years with Hondas and Yamahas, on and off road, so did develop a comfort for manual shifting, and most importantly going into and holding corners. But what isn’t emphasized enough about this new GW-DCT is the availability and acceleration of manual shifts while in “AUTO” mode. On the front and rear of the left grip are what I refer to as the paddle shifters and if you should feel that you may want a lower gear almost instantly, simply tap the rearward facing button with your thumb, and conversely the front button with your index finger to upshift. And there is no lag. It is right there. This bike is capable of a 0-60 in about 3.8 seconds and no one is going to do that manually and is kidding themselves if they think they can. Put this in SPORT mode and nail it and you will be through three gear shifts before you could accomplish one manually. I relate it to where high performance cars are today. Porches are no longer sticks and when those who stubbornly resist the paddle-shifting/automatics are put up against them, the outcome is always in favor of the new technology. They have put professional race car drivers and sticks up against the PS/A’s and again the same results.
    Yes, I have given up the visceral feel of the V-Twin, which is always preferred for the shorter bar-room hopping and short 1-2 hour foliage runs, but if you want a bike that has two distinctly different personalities that excel in both, these new GWs will give you a sport mode that will have you keeping pace or leading the other brand sport-tourers and a tour mode that lowers the tach and turns the bike into a Lexus for all day riding. Personally, I find the Sport mode to be too much performance for most of my rides simply because the auto gear shifts are programmed to present instant torque as well as instantly slowing you back when you roll off. And this is all good when running the twisties and some adrenaline driven straight-aways, but when you, and possibly your pillion, are looking for some relaxed back-roading or mileage-eating freeway runs, the Tour mode keeps the rpms low and everything quiet while still having all that torque available to accelerate at a reasonable level. And most noteworthy, and often used, is the ability to just tap your left thumb on the manual shift button and drop a gear, or two, instantly should you want to pass a couple of vehicles slowing things down.
    Now on the downside in my opinion is the reduced wind protection with these wings when compared to the H-D Ultras. Even after upgrading my windshield and adding a set of mild right and left side cowl deflectors, the air on the passenger is still quite noticeable over what one is used to on an Ultra. But I realize, many will just say hey, you are on a motorcycle, deal with it. The other adjustment for me, and with a 31” inseam, was the added ride height which I find a bit more challenging during slow speed maneuvers, and especially with a passenger. This also seems to impact my comfort level on dirt roads, which come along here and there if you are truly back-roading.
    At this point in ownership, I can honestly say that I just can’t see myself back on a H-D tourer. And when you experience this DCT along with the stock heated grips and seats along with this new WALK mode, I think the K1600 Beemer will drop quickly to your second choice as a luxury tourer or even sport-tourer. That is if you are not hell bent on having top HP bragging rights and possibly a bit more cornering finesse. I researched and test rode the GW DCT as wells as the Beemers - K1600GTL & Grand AMERICA, and still feel I made the right decision. Yes, you will have to deal with all of the sidewalk riders dismissing the bike as ugly and just a remake of the two-wheeled sofa, not too mention the H-D die-hards that just feel they are too young for a GW. But take a long test drive on a DCT and then offer an updated opinion on the benefits of manual foot shifting. These transmissions are silky smooth and do so because they have the even gears on one spool and the odd gears on another so when it is ready to shift, manually or automatically, the next incremental gear is already spooled up and running for almost a complete seamless shift. Add in the Hill-Start control, and I don’t think you will miss the need for the stressful starts in heavy traffic on a substantial incline when loaded down with a passenger and baggage.
    And keep in mind that this generation of combustion powered wings will likely be the last before the inevitable switch to batteries. It is hard for me to see how HD will keep the looks and feel of their V-Twins with battery power, whereas I can see this 1800 Honda power plant being easily replaced with DC power while maintain everything that the wings have worked up to.

      I owned the k1600 GA for 2 years. Nothing but issues. I loved that bike. I just could not take it anymore. once I hit 15K, all the crap started and the running to the dealer was too much for me. Someone took that headache from me. I own now 2020 GW DCT Tour and I do not see myself riding anything else.....ever. I am so addicted to this bike and always on it. The paddle shifting is super. The Sport mode is magical. This bike is not perfect like any other bike, but it is perfect for me.

      Great review. I bought a new 2008 Goldwing (airbag model) and kept it for about 11 years. ABout 1.5 years ago (2019), I got a deal on a used 2016 Ultra Limited with 5 miles on it. I figured it was 8 years newer and I couldnt get hurt for $18k. It was basically a new bike. Anyway, I traded the Goldwing for the Ultra Limited. I replaced a bunch of crap on the bike (Head unit, bars, lights, etc...) and took the bike onto the highway. After I got home from a 2 hour ride, I put the bike up for sale. It was a TOTAL POS on the highway. No power, handled like a 1940's milk truck and I basically felt unsafe. It was HORRIBLE compared to my 2008 Goldwing. I now ride a 2018 VMax that I bought new but will be buying a new Goldwing in the near future.
      I am absolutely done with Harley. The are overpriced, antiquated, poor handling and problematic vibrators for people who want to "seem cool" cause they are on a Harley. I have heard all the cutdowns from Harley owners but the joke is on them :)

    Yes, the new Gold wing is a superb motorcycle in ALL respects. I took one for a test ride and was thoroughly and totally impressed in all respects except wind coverage. Honda once again has hit the nail on the head !! However, nearly $40K Canadian out the door simply wasn't worth it over my superb 2003 Gold wing that has been customized to fit me....Wingsoft seat, floorboards, bar backs making a sofa like riding position. At near 80 years old, I expect it will outlast me. With 135,000 kms on it, it's barely broken in and is likely good for another 20 years of riding (hopefully but not likely, me....:)
    I was reluctant to take a new one for a drive as I was concerned that it would make my much older Wing seem really lacking. However, it didn't actually which is a testament to how great the Wing is regardless of it's age or generation. At my stage in life where I can easily afford pretty much anything I want, I just can't see springing for a new one that will need thousands of dollars of extras to make it as comfortable as the older one I own now. And honestly, the high tech stuff on the new ones are features I never use. When I ride, I want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the road and NEVER listen to either the radio or the telephone EVER.....old school maybe, but I like it that way. I love the purr of the motor and the beauty of the roads I ride and screw the modern interruptions. I can cover 500 kms a day even at my age, and enjoy every single moment of peace and quiet.....
    Honda I salute you. From my first 305 Dream in 1968 to today's finest Gold Wing, you continue to amaze me.......

And i wasnt really sure about the DCT , until i bought a 2021 Africa Twin with DCT . And i really like it . This is probably backwards to what most people would think.
    Ive put over 5k miles on the AT in 3 months . The biggest problem i notice when getting on the GW is making sure to downshift when coming to a stop. After owning around 50 motorcycles these are the 2 best ive owned.

    The audio via Bluetooth and Apple Car Play works extremelty well once you have it set-up. Really not that difficult. Honda has updated the firmware a couple of times since 2018 and it has helped make the connection much more reliable. It might be the best audio/infotainment interface on the motorcycle world, and I think it likely 2x better than what BMW currently offers. I understand the interface on the new RT is pretty wonky and has it's own set of issues.
    I do agree that the audio from the speaker system is pretty weak. Never use it and would prefer if Honda just didn't provide the external speaker system - save some weight, complexiity and money.

    Hello, great summary video. I enjoy my GW 2021 DCT TOUR since 3 months and already put 6000 km on it. To make a story short: it is the most fantastic bike I ever had in my 50 years biking experience...!! The automatic double clutch transmission is the equivalent of a Porsche PDK one, and the flat 6 with REMUS exhaust I installed remind me the CAYMAN S I had for a while....:):)
    I would not even talk about the suspension that are so well calibrated and automated when traveling mostly with my wife and heavy luggages. So, what to improve on this bike?... THE APPLE CAR PLAY implementation !! It is unbelievable to offer such a poor user interface with action button to press DOWN in order to see the menu going UP, or up and down to browse the apps left or right...!!
    And so inconsistent from one app to the others....
    It is even DANGEROUS because it requires such a deep attention on the screen to make it work instead of watching the road....
    So I hope HONDA will read the feedbacks of all the users and will provided an update of the software.
    If you forget this issue (but do you buy a bike for Apple car play..??) I HIGHLY recommend this bike as probably the best on the market today..!!

After your review, I'm realizing that this might be the perfect thing to fulfill my Two-Up needs mixed with excellent long distance potential as well as other predispositions I might have around road-only riding - your style of ride reviews is most compelling - much thanks for all you do!

    The 2018+ Goldwing has been out 3+ years, yet I have never seen one on the Interstate Highway USA. But I have seen squadrons of Harleys everywhere. The Goldwing seems to sway side-to-side a lot because it has not double hydraulic forks to provide lateral stability.

    • @SoloPilot6
      @SoloPilot6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess that depends which "Interstate Highway USA" -- lots of Wings around here, ranging from the 1970s up to the latest model. If you see one big bike riding by itself, it's a lot more likely to be a Goldwing than a Harley. Harleys run in gaggles, mostly under accountants and dentists. It's a "be seen on a Harley" thing, more than a "Let's go ride" thing.

      hornet224,....after 19000 miles on a 2019 Wing, I can very bluntly say, the Wing absolutely does not sway side to side. I have owned and ridden lots of Harley's, they have the worst suspension in the industry. The "herd" is how I see the riders you are talking about. May be yours, but never was and still not my style after 3/4 million miles.

      Previous bike was a 2015 FJR, loved it but was in town most of the time and bought a NC750X DCT then a 2021 Goldwing DCT non-tour. Now I have a FJR type bike that is easier in the city and I even put the same top case on the wing as I had on the FJR. The walking mode is nice and the all around easier on and off for errands is too. The hard part was sending in extra cash to get it paid, I don't like notes on recreational vehicles.

    I find the bike to be loud.
    I would not hesitate to put on quieter mufflers.
    When I'm riding the sound is like I'm behind a kid with a resonator on his civic.
    I have never had a navigator and I found this easy to use and was floored at how it rerouted me thru Indianapolis where everything is under construction. My wife asked where are you going?
    I said, I'm just following my navigation. Off the expressway, thru city and back on expressway.
    It works great.
    My biggest complaint is the clutch lever. Honda knows some of us will want the manual and they are building the dct 6:1 manual. The clutch doesn't engage until the end of throw in any adjustment setting. It has stalled on me a few times. Otherwise I feel like I'm over reving to get going. Makes no sense. I need a fix.
    I need a replacement lever that is closer to the grip and life is good.
    As it is I'm thinking of a cut off wheel and a welder. It sucks bad.

    This isn’t a 2021 model ! Imho might be a 2018-19. Has the small trunk (tour pack) and small old style passenger hand grips plus the color scheme is backwards where it is red the 21 is black etc.

    • @ronfriedman8740
      @ronfriedman8740 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct, the '21 has a thick silver pinstripe separating the red and black along the fairing and bags. Other than Honda responding to the public outcry for the enlarged tour pack and modified passenger grips I do believe it's the same bike as the '18-20.
      With a 2014 GW, I like no payments, but the electronic adjustable windscreen & traction control were items I said the GW needed when I bought it in 2015. Personally, if I were to purchase a new GW today, I'd opt for the 6 speed and not the DCT.

      I would say it depends on what you want to do with it... if you want to carry a passenger and luggage & don't care about the weight... take the wing, if you want a lighter, cheaper, faster, better handling bike, take the RT.

    • @dougaugustine933
      @dougaugustine933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be interesting to ride them back to back. If you carry a passenger - really hard to beat the Wing. The RT might actually have slighlty more luggage capacity. Guessing the Wing has better long term reliability and it has a larger dealer network.

      I changed my K1600 GTL Exclusive into GW. I loved the engine and driving the bike. Main reason for changing was that GW is much more comfortable for my wife - you can't even compare. Others were that GW feels modern long distance touring bike (described in the channel) as GTL E is made for driver only, a bit old fashion bike for the purpose. I did not select DCT because I want to have option for the clutch in tight places and/or occasional last mile dirt road.

    • @gabbyhayes1568
      @gabbyhayes1568 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karilehtonen9758 I wouldn’t disparage any Honda as I’ve owned several. And I came close to buying a GW, but opted for something a little less sporty, but even more comfortable, a Star Venture for touring. Only reason I prefer the BMW to the Honda is the motor. It just feels like an expensive race car lol.

    The infotainment doesn't need any of that. Like you mentioned on the usability of other buttons, you only need to click in one button in the center console (the one in the middle!) It's written AUDIO, and as this simbols under 🎧/🔊 ! Imagine that, a headphone and a speaker! Wow
    Page 54 and 77 on the European Owner's Manual, something that riders who do revives like this one, should consider read before make assumptions based in "I don't know how to do it, Honda needs to refresh the system.. it needs to be more human usable 🙄😅! Just because you are tired looking for it, and it's there, very straightforward.
    Advice: Before 🏍️, read 📖!

    Sorry you didn't mention the most important spec - the tiny gas tank and pathetic range for a half ton bike. That defeats all the touring qualities it otherwise has. My 2001 GL at least had a 6 1/2 gal. tank and I was lucky if I got 200 miles between fill-ups. Even the BMW 1600 has a 7 gal. tank. It's not about not wanting to stop - its that getting gas is a pain. If it's OK with Dave, always include tank size and mpg (or even KMPL) in all bike reviews. But, I also want to mention that I always look forward to your reviews, even on bikes I would never consider.

    • @dougaugustine933

      Minor issue unless you are 200+ miles between gas stations. Need to stop and stretch every 100 miles or so.. might as well just top off the gas. Also, as someone else mentioned, you can get 50+ MPG if you take it easy. Pretty amazing on a bike this size.

    I have two complaints about the DCT. First is that during extremely low speed maneuvering it tends to shift at inopportune moments. Second is that it resists downshifting a bit too much in Tour mode.
    If you know you're going to be doing a very tight u-turn shift into Manual and force the transmission into 1st. And to get a passing gear on the highway simply touch the manual downshift "paddle." Don't rely on the throttle to make it happen.
    Fairly minor issues, though. The bike is absolutely miraculous.
