STORYLINE:
Cambodian Police opened fire on Wednesday after protesters in the capital Phnom Penh looted and set fire to the Thai Embassy during a nationalistic demonstration.
The protest took place after Thai TV star, Suwanan Kongying, was quoted in the media here as saying Cambodia had stolen the famous Angkor Wat temple from Thailand.
She has denied making any such comment.
The rioting continued late in the night with mobs attacking Thai-owned establishments including hotels, restaurants, airline offices and a cellular phone company office.
The mob of about 1,000 dispersed briefly when the shots were fired but protesters regrouped to hurl stones at about 200 armed policemen.
At least four policemen and one woman were injured in the stone-throwing. It was not immediately clear if the shooting caused any casualties, and whether police had fired at the mob or in the air.
Cambodian national police chief Hok Lundy said police had tried to avoid violence, "but the protesters at the end turned violent and acted in a way punishable by law."
"Any place that has a Thai language sign has been attacked," he said, adding that some small-scale looting was also going on.
The peaceful daylong protest outside the embassy by about 400 people, mostly students, turned violent as more protesters joined, swelling the crowd to 1,000. Some rioters breached the embassy's gate and forced their way into its main building.
After a while, flames were seen coming out from a section of the darkened building, but the fire died down. An annex to the embassy was also on fire and burned for hours.
Fire trucks arrived on the scene but made no attempt to extinguish the blaze. Deputy fire chief Sok Vannra said the mob threatened to burn the trucks if they tried to put out the fire.
An outnumbered posse of about 50 policemen also stood by as the mob went on the rampage. Reinforcements arrived later but were still outnumbered.
Protesters burned tires, smashed lamps and scaled the embassy's gate to try and lower the Thai flag from its flagpole as onlookers cheered.
A Cambodian staffer at the embassy said all 20 vehicles in the compound were burned or destroyed. The Thai staff escaped through the back door while the Cambodian employees emerged from the front, said the employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity. There were no injuries and all were safe, he said.

After the destruction, Cambodia paid 6 millions dollars to Thailand for compensation. Kob did not say anything regarding of Angkor claims to belong to Thai, it was a fake news without the evidence. The reporters incited the two countries into the political war.
