As the conflict in Thailand intensifies, VICE News goes deep into the lives of the rich and powerful royalists of Bangkok, who are fighting to keep the old order from crumbling. These Bangkok elite have long aligned themselves with the most potent symbol of Thai unity - King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest ruling current monarch. The royalists' fanatical devotion to the king has long assured them the unquestionable claim to represent the country. But that's changing rapidly, and the country's political climate is inspiring PDRC leaders Nat and Victor, two young, Ferrari-driving multi-millionaires, out to the streets - and into a violent and unpredictable future. How long will they be able to hold on to power?

Vice you did a really bad job in this report. You interviewed and stayed with the Thai eiltes. I would say the two brothers are very entitled. I would probably interview the people who wanted to vote but couldn't and discussed the situation with him/her.

"It takes a lot of guts for you to not get a red Ferrari" That is the most yes-man line I have ever heard.
That journalist or whatever is one shallow dude.
Sorry he’s even worse, his family is rich but less richer so he licks the other rich guy’s ass. Wow!
Yeah, who doesnt want to drive a menstrual red colored car.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
@@dubstep101angu it wasnt the journalist. It was the older friend who takes part in the protests with him.
All I see is wealthy people trying to protect their easy lives and keep the poor people down
@Robert Bonneau i have a longboard..if thats able to compare with ur Ferrari XD
@@flushu603 you can pickup a longboard to hit a guy who has a Ferrari but you can't pick the Ferrari to hit the longboard guy

Sounds like America
I agree
This rich thai friend of Nat's fake posh British accent is annoying me.
And looks gay

i'm thai and i will support him PS.i'm not rich
posh? sounds like regional London, not posh RP. Probably schooled there
Drunken Science I am about to say this! you took my words. lol
His english skill is still Shit even though he grew up in the United kingdom. Are you sure he grew up there.
That's what he's fighting for? The right to stroll around in his daddy's sports car, while most Thais are impoverished?
To be fair, that's how the video made it look.
Not saying I doubt it, but this is not raw footage.
Jason Wood He literally said "this is what we're fighting for". What makes this fucking kid better than Kim Jung Un?
Yeah. Because fuck mild, rational comments- just believe everything you see on TV.
!!!
pump the brakes, sparky.
Jason Wood Are you claiming that they edited his voice?
I am only acknowledging that they edited the footage. Vice has, hm, let's call it a tendency to edit dialogue to make it a little more convenient to their narrative.
I can't possibly know what the context of those words were. Maybe that guy is a heartless weirdo that's completely out of touch with reality. Maybe he's not. Certainly can't make a judgement that subtle off a Vice edit 1-liner
WTF??!! a guy just complained about the country failure because of connection but then just explained that he is rich and powerful because of connection ?! damn confusing, that's like a druglord against drugs lol
No and his family have been stealing money from the people of Thailand for a very long time. They don't want anyone new in power, because that person would then steal all the money, not them.
I thought the exact aame thing
He was sent to the best school. I wonder if they give refunds.
Dude I'm still confused lol
It is safe to assume this was deceptively edited.
"it takes a lot of guts to drive a Ferrari that's not red"? Gutsy indeed!!
Hey man, You and I should be thankful that we've never been put in such a tough situation.
The Red / Blue Ferrari burden is his fight. We could never understand what that kind of decision making is like.
Baba Booey Yeah, you spend that much on a car in the "wrong" colour and we'll see if you've got the guts to do it. It's like you or I buying a brand new BMW in pink or yellow instead of black, white or dark blue.
tombraadyqb Got the "guts" HA!!...oh yes driving a yellow BMW would not affect me in the least.
Sure, but which one would you rather buy and own, a yellow one or one in a more conventional colour?
The video is between red and blue not red and Paisley with pink stripes.
"When I got my first Ferrari..." ... I think he meant "When my mum bought me my first Ferrari.."
I think what YOU mean is, "God Damn, I wish I had a Ferarri, but I'm a loser and will never get one, so I'll trash anyone who has one."
Burton L Well I don’t think that the guy in the video worked for that Ferrari, he was simply born into a rich family lol
@@burtonl7239 i guess your also a gutsy privileged brat with a blue ferrari xD

Being filmed by vice seems like the highlight of his life. I hope he reads the comments .
The most ironic part of this report is that these two guys think that they look like heroes for their country, but 90 percent of the people who have watched this clip think that they are arrogant d-bags. I wonder what most Thais think of their pompous upper class.
Their accents are a strange mix of Thai, American, and British, but their grammar is a lot less refined than you'd expect from rich kids who were schooled in the UK.
His accent is probably influenced by that combination of accents
Too right.
They sound Australian.
no matter which accents they have, but their attitudes sound shit to me
Maybe they learned from the movies😂😂😂😂😂
It's funny how he says that the reason this country is failing is b/c of connections...when what they're fighting for is to keep this whole system of connections in place.
They stated, "No one should criticize the monarchy" essentially restricting free speech.
And they are moaning about Free Speech. Ironic, huh?
5:20 I find it so funny how he stops at every 3 to 4 words to prepare his next few words.... to make them sound as British as possible LOL!
Its so bad that he needs a subtitle and its ONLY for him lol
He's processing his thoughts from Thai to English To bri ish english lmao
wait, so let's me just reiterate - he's fighting for his RIGHT to drive a ferrari through town at high speed??? wtf???
That's exactly what it sounds like
All I see are a group of spoilt young rich kids trying to find a cause that doesn't really matter to them... They are not sacrificing anything, they are just living by daddy's money
When you have a wealthy family what sacrifices do you need to do?
Nothing because in the end you will get ur parents money and company...
5:20 "that is something I love about you. You have a number of Ferraris but not even one in red color." omg...

They're are just entitled
We have a King in Norway too. But here, people seem to have a different attitude to royalty. They are loved by the people and some get really obsessed by royal births and weddings and they get a lot of coverage in the glossy magazines. But they are also satirized and mocked, and no-one minds that because they are not gods but just people like everybody else. They are supposed to represent a unifying symbol of our democracy, and hence, they do not participate in party politics and cooperates with any government that has been backed by the parliament. They only became political during WW2 as a unifying symbol of the opposition to the Nazi occupation.
same like Thai royal family, they ran away to vacation at Switzerland before japan invasion then they came after WWII as "the god who safe Thailand"... fucking sick
prophetchannel
I think you should speak for yourself, the royals of Norway are not as loved by everyone as you make it seem.
Prophetchannel is obviously not paying attention, but there is currently a political discussion in Norway regarding removing the monarchs just like we removed christianity as a state religion. We'll spend 27.6 million US dollars in 2014 on people who are nothing but an attraction and a symbol. The royalty of Norway is based on an undemocratic principle even if they don't have any ruling power, and I'll give it 50 years tops before they're gone.
hackhenk i hope the "change" about your royal family should happen in Thailand, but just talk about "change" --> u guy can win the prize "jail for 20 yr for lese majeste"... PS. i agree with u
prophetchannel In Thailand the kings are well educated and contribute to progress and science . Bhumibol is a scientist musician engineer and a computer genious . Besides i support the thai law of not mocking him because of all good things he did for the people , even now when they are in deep shit with Thaksin he tells the thai people to be united and strong . Also his book on the new theory makes a nice reading and is the key behind the success of some thai people.
Synthetic Dawn dam genious in computer+ sport+ medcine+ engineer+ religion+ music+ phography +drawing ... in Thailand He is the father of everything , i agree with u
yeah it's those little moments in life that make it worthwhile, like driving your vintage ferrari through downtown bangkok. I really can't believe he said that with a straight face

It disturbs me to see those "rich" arrogant kids living comfortably their lives while the 90% of the people suffer. I myself come from a middle-class laotian family but I have had the opportunity to spend my childhood in Thailand and have had many childhood rich friends like the ones on this video. All of my childhood friends had very wealthy parents and we all went to French International private school. However, I left Thailand in 2005 for Canada at the age of 14 and boy, am I happy I left. Seeing this video brings back sour memories, these rich Thai kids (especially from Bangkok) have always looked down on so many people. They think they are the best of their kind. I would always hang out with the rural kids because I always had an affinity with them (coming from Laos, a poor country), they are so kind and humble, unlike the rich ones. I always knew there was going to be an uprising from the poor and middle class since the day I left Thailand and I hope the rich kids get a good slap on their faces and lower their ego.

Is this some kind of documentary about mafia in Thailand?
From my knowledge of Star Trek I'm betting the Red Shirts are going to lose...
As a Thai rewatching this in October 2020 - just wow! 🙄
These two elites are one of the prime examples why young generations are rising now... I am happy they won’t kowtow to cronyism and the establishments!
One of the best short documentary as of late from Vice. Great editing and a good soundtrack.

Its 2014 and people still worship monarchs...let that sink in.
Thames Wangpatravanich The redeeming quality of a monarchy would be the aspect of genetics and the world would certainly be better if the most capable ruled; however, to think that capability is limited to a single bloodline is dumb as shit. Not to mention all the incest...
And the alternative is what?
Some corrupt piece of shit that got a lot of innocent people killed with is "tough on drugs policy", amnesty international reported that the total deaths in thailand DOUBLED because he threatened the jobs of law enforcement if his newly drafted policies didn't get results. Many of the people who died were extrajudicial killings based on suspicion alone.
That means a lot of innocent people died because some bureaucrat wanted to keep their job.
Thaksin abused his political influence to buy land for family members constituting a conflict of interest resulting in a two year sentence for corruption that he bolted from the country to avoid.
Thaksin brought lawsuits against critical journalists.
He also attempted changes in policy to directly benefit business owning family members.
At the very least, these people that are the alternative are no better, but in reality Thaksin is worse, because goofballs like you that have an axe to grind with royalty would rather have idiots like these elected instead.
Unstable nations need strong leaders, and you simply cannot get that from a populist politician.
So think about that.
www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154582/debate-2004
Thames Wangpatravanich When its a new era? Yeah, I think we should ask questions and be inquisitive about everything. Do monarchs even run anything anymore? Or are they just there to take money from less deserving blood lines. The fact of the matter is that its antiquated, quit fooling yourself you fucking clown. You can call me ignorant, but I think ignorance is worshiping someone who is no better or more deserving than you. You must be kidding yourself if you think Kings and Queens are what keep the electricity on, and the water flowing in modern societies.
Nathan Milaszewski A president has to spend half of his term learning how to run a nation efficiently and the other half actually running it efficiently. Monarchs cost much less than their republic counterparts because they do not have to spend a multitude of cash on elections and diplomatic missions. The Prince of Liechtenstein and British Monarch, if anything make money from their monarchy. Democracies are just as archaic, the Athenian democracy was effective until the Athenians decided they could vote for other individuals' stuff. The top ten best countries to live in are monarchies. A hereditary monarchy has a blood connection to the founding of the nation because their family has been around since its beginning. A monarch can represent the people the best because they have no political affiliation. The French President is an agnostic socialist; he could never represent a French conservative catholic well.
After living in the country of Thailand for three years, I feel this documentary oversimplifies the basic history, goals and beliefs of both sides of the political conflict and of course, the power of the military.
Actually Nat is now in anti-gov, monarchy reform movement and he got hit in the eye with a tear gas can during a protest which makes him one eye blind
and After the incident he posts on his facebook “My one eye is blind forever, but I’ve never seen anything this clearly in my entire life,”
VICE ... why did you have to put subtitles on every time Victor was speaking?
because his accent was atrocious and incomprehensible?
I cannot see much point in this documentary...just like how I can no longer see any points in those protests by PDRC.
Anyone watching in 2021? Nat has changed sides. He was shot in the eye by the government and is now blind in one eye.
Can't make this up, he probably would've cringed if he has to watch himself from 7 years ago.
@@GeloDianela he do and he seems to be out of his family bloodline for the change of that

Nat's friend should just stay in school with an accent like that no wonder you keep transferring schools lol
Power should not be inherited.
If only someone could design a fool-proof meritocracy...
I found sick people in this video.
Somsak Jiamteerasakul, the thai historian and the professor said that if the monarchy couldn't be criticized and examined as the same the politician is. Thai social will never be better.
These kids are afraid they'll lose the fortune their father's amassed through corruption to began with LOL...
Yet they say they are "fighting" against corruption? LOL....
There is a question: what if majority of the people decided to choose a bad government? Under all circumstances, it is better to allow the majority of the people to choose a bad government instead of alienating the majority of the population. It is better to go against the crimes of the government instead of thinking the majority of the population is stupid and "we" are smarter than everyone else. There is nothing more dangerous than thinking ["I" or "we" just know better than the majority] in choosing government.
Great as always VICE. now you should do a similar Video following some rich Red-shirts and hear their point of view.
Totally agree.
I think they have that. I saw a video about the Red Shirt, but they are not rich because the Red Shirt "represents the country people" (quotation mark because the truth of the highlighted word is debatable).
All this represent represent. I'm living here on the ground. and yes political supporters can be poor and from country sides. but the top leaders of parties. are either very rich from before or they just became very rich. long live our beloved king, 1st constitutional right: let our king drive ferraris and be proud they dont have a red one, while we walk to work and eat scraps to survive
2: bow down to our great heaven sent king with all obedience or risk imprisonment
3: we the people should not be given the same rights as our king because our decisions and opinions are not for the good of the people
yeah
Our beloved King main car is Maybach62 not Ferrari (2 cream-colored and blue one ) infact, he never use Ferrari his ex-main car is Roll-royce Phantom VI other reserved cars are Cadillac DTS and Volkswagen Caravelle
ทัศวรรณ ยิ่งมี มายบัคนี่ ที่ทักษิณซื้อถวายให้หรือเปล่าครับ
His majesty main car bought by Taksin Govt. (cream colored) it's public property, 3 others (Somesource pluss one brown-gold but i use fact in wikipedia) are his private property, i'm not sure some told me that 3 reserved has given by Daimler but 10 millions US give isn't make sense and may take some negative views to the King.
Dude, WTF are you talking about?! First of all, the king DOES NOT USE Ferrari because 1. He is too aged for that, 2. He PREFERS TO WALK AMONG THE PEOPLE when he visits them (it's only recently when he has been ill that he rides in a van), and 3. He DO NOT BUY Ferraris because his majesty USES HIS PERSONAL MONEY TO FUND PROJECTS THAT HELPS THE FARMERS AND THE COMMON PEOPLE. Second of all the king has done MANY MANY things to help the people in the countryside and to improve their living conditions, WAYYYYY more than any Prime Minister did for the people. Lastly, the KING is "UNDER LAW, ABOVE POLITICS", meaning that under the constitution, he has NO POLITICAL POWER and does not wish to have nor excercise it, and he, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER CITIZENS, is abride under the law of Thailand and he can be sentensed under the law. The People of Thailand LOVES the king not just because He's the "king", but it's because he has done SO MUCH for the people and for the country, THAT IS WHY WE, Thai People, LOVE OUR KING, THE FATHER OF THE NATION!!!! Learn about Thailand and its history before making BS comments!
No, to fund project to help farmer is public property by Govt, in fact to talk in that way it isn't good to him, we're living in Democracy country if you talk in the way like that the King will struct in Politic and that's bad for our image of our Democracy King who's NO POLITIC POWER .The Royal project maybe thought by him or his team (and pay them by our tax,too in Limited Monarchy regime) but never launch by him we use Govt to launch projects with our tax, Do not use 'Good King Model' in Rama V (Absolute Monarchy) to presume that it's good to Rama IX in 21st century in that time he did good to our country but if u use that model to presume our King do it today, it may take disrespect to our King because of the confusing in our political system.
I wanted to puke at so many points in this video. "you are so brave not to buy a red ferrari", "weekend rides you need something different", "driving around Bangkok in your precious little pony...that's what we fight for", "you need connections...i had a problem at one school...went to a better school, had a problem at another school..went to an even better school...etc" Shows you how pointless the PDRC protests were if it was to keep these two in the life they're accustomed too.
You can realise the stupidity of people when they say that they fight for the right of drive their ferraris in Bangkok. Summary: A couple of rich guys using people to fight in the name of their privileges.
I can't find any sympathy for this kid. HE SAYS that the red shirts fight so they don't get taken advantage of by the rich city people, and he fights so he can drive his Ferrari on weekends. wtf?
a friend was telling me that all the wealthy business people in thailand are basically chinese while everybody else (the poor) are native thai ?

Nat Thanakitamnuay has now disowned the PDRC and has joined the opposing side, fighting to remove the current Thai government and reforming the constitution. He has unfortunately just recently lost his right eye after getting shot by a tear gas canister or rubber bullet. It would be interesting if Vice revisited this topic and interview Nat again on why he has regretted his role in the PDRC and how his is leading the fight for the Thai youth movement.
Wealthy people are the same no matter where they live. Same people, same mentality.

Nonsense. This is totally absurd. How much would Taksin have to spend for buying at least 15 millions votes? That would be a hell lot money. The "500 baht (~15$) per vote" thing, which the royalist accused the government of, is also ridiculous. I honestly don't think people would risk their lives on the cheap. That money is not enough to make people passionately fight for their rights. And to say they are "too cheap to rightfully vote" is the worst kind of discrimination.
By the way, isn't it your ROYAL FAMILY that is the richest of all? According to Forbes, King Bhumibol is the longest and the wealthiest royal in the world, estimated to be worth upwards of $30 billion, beating oil-rich Brunei’s Sultan Bolkiah into second place. The richest royal in the country where finding clean water is still hard. Poor Thailand.

I don't understand how more of the pictures of the king had not been desecrated, graffitied or torn down. They're always so clean and pristine, unless they do get vandalised but replaced very quickly.
My understand from the above video - The red shirts want democracy, the ability to vote for a party whereas the yellow shirts want a form of oligarchy in the form of the monarchy, they only block voting because they know they would lose.
Speaking ill of the king is illegal. Defacing a picture of the king would earn prison time, and possibly a lynching.
The way I explain this to my friends abroad is that our country runs on a system of democratic-monarchy under mafia rules. It's always been a power struggle for the past 50 years. Ideally the democratic monarchy we should have is that of UK. However, given our very weak political infrastructure and our ever-dying habits of taking shortcuts whether it be through the law or politics, I doubt things can resolve itself quickly. cheers.

This is the big problem of Thailand.
You may take our lives! But you'll never take our right to drive ferraris around damn it!
My beloved country sinking deeper and deeper. Now see? How deep we have gone.
His bodyguard has so much swag
The Thai monarchy and its Royalist elite have long held the true power in Thailand, generations upon generations of Thais have grown up being told since their childhood that the king is essentially divine, that he commands special powers, with any actual criticism of the King and his royalists being treated as a violation of the law, punishable by lengthy prison sentences.
Quite a disturbing regime to be certain.
These two guys are the good example of the fragment system. Thai people are rewarded for being loyal to the king for so long. The more loyalty, the easier to progress.
I like this guy, he doesn't have a red Ferrari, now that's something to respect.
The other guy in the car was like you have a lot of guts for not getting a red Ferrari
What how can u have guts for not having a red one
Those cars he has are not very expensive. The 911 looked like a '99 which is worth 18k. Anyone could afford.
Thailand's minimum wage equates to $1.21 dollars. It's going to take a while to reach that 18k.
in country which most people get salary 300 us a month, and have to pay 2-300 percent for tax of luxury car
that guys british accent is well funy
I love what Vice has done here.
These are all luxury cars that nobody in any other country wanted anymore. That's the only reason why this royal family has them.
I love my king! I want to fight for and protect him!
So, so, sad.
UPDATE: 7 years have passed. the PDRC had won its ultimate goal of initiating a coup where its leader--Prayut Chan-o-cha--and the military junta ruled Thailand until 2019 where the general election was held under military backed constitution which, to no one's surprises, brought them back to power.
the king they were trying to protect has since passed and was succeeded by the less popular current king. together with awful mismanagement of the economy and the COVID19, the youth-led popular uprising has now swung back to the anti-establishment camp, where the government has ramped up its crackdown through use of the draconian lese majese laws and increasingly violent protest crackdowns.
under this backdrop, Nat has defected from the royalist camp to the current anti-establishment camp and has since been on the streets with the protestors. unfortunately, today, he is reported to having been hit with rubber bullet which could possibly blind him.
a really ironic turn for the still unfolding events.
My dad also has a vintage porch
Does somebody know how the situation is now ?

but i suppose he was innocent
but hes a killer. 1assasin.
I don't understand what is going on. Who's side are the cops on? Who's side are the military on? What are which side fighting for if the government is already gone but they still have buildings? What is what and who is who? Are guns legal? How often is lethal force used? how often do unarmed people die? What are those necklaces?
It's a story as old as time; they're on the side of the people WHO ARE PAYING THEM. The side of the people who are feeding, clothing, and sheltering them
As long as 1% of the world's population controls 99% of the world's wealth, none of us will ever be free.
Precisely...this was a very badly made report with an agenda trying to potray the yellows as some rich spoilt Bangkok kids! But that couldn't be further from the truth
At the heart of the problem is political representation and power. Thaksin draws his power from the heavily populated but poorer Thai heartland. The yellows draw their power from the southern region with less than 20% of the Thai population. The Thai heartland does not vote for Thaksin as much as it does for his cronies! Thaksin's PTP party is now made up of some 10 smaller parties that have local loyalties, thus marginalizing the only remaining opposition voice - the democrats! In the first election when Thaksin's party garnered 27% of the votes, the democrats garnered 21%....the remainder small regional parties with clan politics were bought over and promised ministry seats!
With almost 70-80% of their votes now in his favor, Thaksin was quickly becoming a dictator, threatening any and everyone that spoke out against him! Lawyers and journalists opposed to him disappeared, TV stations gagged and brought under the state! You get the picture...Thailand was soon headed in the direction of Red China had these brave souls not come out
If I were to put it down in one sentence: these protests were against dictatorship! With only a tiny opposition left in parliament, you can imagine what's been happening over the past 12 years!
Guns can be purchased with a license, about as easy to get as in parts of America. Everybody is on the side of the King. The two sides have different ideas about what happens after.
Yeah that's half of Thailand's problem, it is all background dealing. You are asking the questions that every one is asking. You have to understand that the Coup last year wiped out all of those protests and soldiers are now patrolling every where and the OM is spouting anti-farang sentiment take that how you will.
"It takes a lot of guts for you not to get a red ferrari...." yeah you're really taking one for the team there guy.....
