When I was a kid, I thought Sinatra was old fogy stuff. But one night, driving to work and feeling really stressed, Sinatra came on the radio and then I understood how great he was.

Yeah, it’s great when a piece of music that you didn’t care for suddenly reveals itself to you and it clicks. You get it.

I grew up hearing him on the radio singing some boring stuff in the 60s and thought he was an old foggie too. Then my wife and I watched a biopic shot him on TV in the early 90s that features his early jazz songs and it inspired up to buy a couple of collections, particularly, The Columbia Years. Man, totally different singer than the one i thought I knew.

Indeed. I'm a huge Dylan fan and I read an interview with Bob when he was releasing his first album of Sinatra covers. He talked about how daunting it was to try to follow in Frank's shoes and said that he basically had to go and spend several months sharpening up his vocals, just so he could capture some of the precise diction and phrasing that made Frank what he was. The result was some of Bob's best singing in decades.

I have taken a Voice class from the great Sue Harmon in 1972 ..who taught at Cal State Fullerton ( Kevin Costner and Oscar Winning Titanic Director James Cameron are among other Alumni ) you should here what people say about his Voice that really know vocals .. and music ..
the greatest " singer " ever ! My Dad born in 1922 ..raised in East LA to German immigrants ..told me of the greatness of Sinatras Voice..his breath control..the way he draws out a note forever ..moves
on to the next lyric ..without running g out of breath..listen to the " t-r-u-u-u-u-e "
in this song ! Incredible ..thN moves effortlessly to the next lyric ! Never be another like Frank ! And pure class and humility 👏 bravo 👏!

The band is none other than the jazz legend Count Basie and his Orchestra. Music doesn't get any better than this. I don't know if "wholesome" is the word I'd use to describe Frank. I mean, he himself used to say he's nothing but a saloon singer. But there's no doubt about this: If there was a Mount Rushmore of male vocalists, his face would be the first one they'd chisel out of the granite. Probably the most significant pop singer of the 20th century.

He was the best and still is by a mile.Phrasing and diction is always spot on.Its a voice that can’t be copied. And he stands out as “The Voice of the Century”.

Understated is cool. Less is more. Restrained is kooky-groovy, baby!

I grew up a hard rock guy and didn't get into Frank until much later, but the man is Mr. Cool, Mr. Soul, Mr. Smooth.

Love me some of that big band stuff. ASia You make excellent points on others voices….maybe because your a singer and you understand , breath, holding a note, dropping down and picking up etc. one thing I noticed long ago and you said it, very clear and extremely distinct. Love watching BJ he likes singing as well but he really appreciates the instrumental abilities. I play several instruments…I will hear a certain great instrument portion and BJ will shake his head or his eyes open up and I’m thinking ..yep….I heard that to my man. Love you guys

Count Basie's band in its prime, and young trumpet player Quincy Jones arrangement.
Ignore Sinatra for a moment and listen to the drum intro, add a flute, a few soft horns, then bring the sax rifts in, then release the horn section! Beautiful song construction. This is a master class in arrangements.
