This song is actually very sad--the lyrics say, "I've got nothin' to live for, seems like nothin' gonna come my way" also, "This loneliness won't leave me alone." He's not wasting time enjoying life--he's wasting time because he's alone and has nothing.

He was one of the greats, but props too to the backing band. This was the legendary Stax band of Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Al Jackson Jr., and Booker T Jones. They were so great that you really don't even notice them in the song, because they played 100% to the song. Musical perfection!

Redding forgot what he was going to sing at the end so he whistled just as a placeholder. He planned to come back to the studio and sing the last verse and add some finishing touches he had discussed with Steve Cropper but was killed before he had the chance. Cropper, who co-wrote the song, was ordered to mix it and finish it two days after Redding died so it could be released immediately (the record company wanted to put it out right away to capitalize on Redding's death). Cropper said it was the hardest thing he ever did. He added the seagull and ocean sounds because Redding had indicated he wanted that, and left in the whistling.

I've heard this song about 8 billion times since I was a little kid and it still gets me every time. Such a beautiful beautiful song and what a gentle and emotive voice. I think it's a song about disillusionment and having traveled all over and still not having found what he's looking for. You can hear the pain and the loneliness and the desolation in his voice. I have spent a lot of time around the ocean and I have literally sat on a dock and watched ships and boats come and go at sunset and it is such a meditative state. You rest your weary body and just feel whatever you're feeling and just kind of detach. There's a certain beauty in it.

Otis never got to finish this song this was why he started whistling at the end. His plan was to finish but then the plane crashed. The song is about a man mired in loneliness and depression. The song was written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper. Cropper was the guitarist on this song. RIP Otis Redding (December 10, 1967). He was only 26 years old. Late one night Otis was working on this track beeing convinced it would be his first #1 on the Billboard charts. So he called up the co-writer/guitarist Steve Cropper in the middle of the night very excited and told him about this song. Steve was like "sounds good man but can me talk about it in the studio tomorrow it's like the middle of the night!" Turned out Otis prediction/feeling was right the song did reach #1 but unfortunately he never got to experience it. The song was released posthumously since he died in a plane crash 1968. Stories says that he was Mr 100 % always went all in regardless if it was on stage or in the studio.

This is his life. He was popular with younger kids like the hippies of San Francisco (he killed at Monterey in 67) but had not really broken through and stayed on the road doing revues and working so, so hard. This is the song of a man who was questioning his dreams and wondering if anything was ever going to really happen for him. It’s a heartbreaker. It’s so prevalent as a song it’s become ER waiting room music but it’s an all timer.

I am from Georgia and want the world to know that we have a bay. The southeastern part of the state is in the Atlantic Ocean. We have one of the country’s busiest seaports in Savannah. Sadly, Savannah was a major hub for slave ships hundred of years ago. Today, Savannah, Brunswick, Tybee Island, Sea Island, Jeckyl Island, and St. Simon’s Island are major vacation destinations. I invite each of you to come visit. Sit on the beach and watch the ships roll in.

Otis wrote this song while on a houseboat in Sausalito, across the bay (on the north side) from San Francisco. I used to catch the ferry in Sausalito to go into the city and often thought of him then. Bear in mind that San Francisco was the west coast mecca for the hippie movement in those days, and for the music scene. It was "where it's at."

Otis was the best! If you can, listen to his version of Try A Little Tenderness recorded during the Monterey Pops concert about a month before he died. It'll give you chills.

*Another song I recall hearing often in my youth...I was maybe 5 or 6 yrs when this one hit the radio. Sad him and band members dying when he was just 26 yrs...in another plane crash. Another day when the music died. People really became more aware of him, and his songs, after his death.*

Hi there. This was his biggest HIT. Listen across the globe. The sad part it's that himself never saw it climb in the charts because he died right after the song came out. That's why there's no live appearances of this song. ✌☯️take care

Otis came from the gospel tradition, and certainly gave his all when he sang. Try A Little Tenderness, Knock on Wood,(with Carla Thomas) and These Arms Of Mine are other songs that come to mind.

I was still in the Navy when this song came out. At sea you missed lots of songs and groups. They came and went and you never heard them. (No radio reception at 150 feet) The song was till big in the summer of 1968 when I left active duty, especially in the Bay area where I was discharged. Like this song ever since then. Thanks.

Actually Chris Stapleton says Otis Redding, Ray Charles. and Freddie King were his vocal influences along with country singers Patty Loveless, Dwight Yoakam and Keith Whitley. Otis Redding's music was the soundtrack of my "coming of age" years. Listen to These Arms Of Mine or Try A Little Tenderness. His influence goes on!!!

Otis Redding has a top-tier voice. Another guy with an amazing voice is Wilson Pickett. Check out him doing Mustang Sally and in the Midnight Hour and you'll realize where Steven Tyler got most of his influence

I feel this is a song about enjoying time. Something so massive and inmersive. Like the waters at a bay. About how much time you really have to either enjoy or dismiss before you're gone.
